'Church 4 uses' by reich is a Utility demonstration of design uses for the Church 4 Beta Unit found in Enrique Orduno's 'New units and new objects template v.1.1'
The intention for this Utility is clear, and uncomplicated. Four separate designs demonstrate the visual impact of, and creative uses for the Church 4 object. The examples are created through design techniques using the Map Copy feature.
I have to separate the uncomplicated nature or simplicity of the Utility with the intended practical purpose -- to arrive at a rating for usefulness. I make no deductions for the simplicity of the purpose.
The Utility does what it intends from the indications given in the description page, and therefore is good. The demonstration material requires a designer to be advanced (With the knowledge of how to use the Map Copy feature in the AoK TC Scenario Editor.), to be able to recreate or use the Utility. I found the Utility to be somewhat useful as a designer who has advanced to using Map Copy. The Utility demonstration also has the capacity to inspire the use of the Church 4 object that is part of the intended purpose. Making this utility more user friendly for new designers, and addressing some Quality and Instructions issues will ultimately make this more useful, and bring the highest rating to this category. (4)
The concept of demonstrating map design techniques and their visual impact on a design is not new. There are many Utilities that demonstrate design ideas, usually referred to as 'eye-candy templates.' Still, this Utility does set itself apart in it's focus of the Church 4 object. The Church 4 Beta Object found in 'New units and new objects template v.1.1' by Enrique Orduno has remained relatively unused by scenario designers. So, to demonstrate design ideas for it can be considered useful, and especially for creating unique eye-candy in scenario designs. I imagine that many enthusiasts have viewed the Church 4 object and questioned what if anything could be done with it. I have questioned this before also. The concept begins with that question and also gives answer to it, and if nothing else at least in the form of inspiration. This is an excellent concept for an 'eye-candy' Utility. (5)
The quality of the utility is very good. Scanning the map and selecting the Outposts as instructed will provide descriptions and additional instructions on how to view the design demonstrations. The creator designer provides four examples of designing with Church 4. Not striking examples of exquisite map design, but enough for utility purposes. I imagine that he left designs unfinished, so that designers like myself could enhance, refine, and make unique the design ideas put forth.
I did have a go at Map Copy and designing inside the template. Advanced users can go right to creating or testing the ideas given in the demonstration. I spent some time creating my own castle courtyard and enjoyed it. In game messages are provided. There is also some useful demonstrations of units for combat on and surrounding the Church 4 object. This was a useful, mildly entertaining, and added to the quality in my opinion. For the most part the quality was excellent, only I'm saving the highest rating due to the lack of instructions for Map Copy that is required to recreate the examples. (4)
The instructions were very good. The instruction to 'map copy' is adequate for advanced designers, but not for new designers. The messages inside the template scenario during tests is a very good feature and does add to the Quality and Instructions of the file. However, I found them to be displaying too quickly for me (I had to finish reading in the Chat screen). I suggest to slow down the in-game messages so the information can be studied. Doing this will add to all other categories of the Review. (4)
Overall: 4.5 (4.25 rounded up)
Adding instructions for Map Copy, and slowing down the displayed instructions will make this 'very' good Utility, excellent. Please credit your source material Church 4 - New units and new objects template v.1.1 by Enrique Orduno.
