Utility: Raptor’s Terrain Template is a showcase of various well-designed terrain types but lacks the instructions and creativity to make it stand out from the crowd. I was left wondering what the intention of this utility was. It was not clear whether this was created as a template for map copy or simply to guide new designers in the area of map design. I found the utility to be substandard for either purpose. The utility lacked particularly in the areas of ‘Instructions’ and ‘Concept’. I will explain in detail further below in the respective categories.
» When designing a utility it is important to establish a purpose for that utility whether it be a tutorial or a map-copy template. The utility should then be designed around the purpose that was recognized. A map copy template may not need to elaborate on how the item was acquired which may, for example, involve RMS scripting. This type of utility simply needs to explain how the user can attain this object in to their scenario; map-copy instructions would be sufficient for this type of design. 2
Concept: The idea of showcasing map design to inspire designers is not a new idea. Many examples of these can be found throughout the Blacksmith being called an eye-candy template, or something of the sort. None of the general designs in the template are new or innovative. The features such as the waterfall with sound, river with rapids, a fountain, and swamp listed on the description page have all been done in other templates or other campaigns/scenarios. There was nothing really done to innovate any of these general design concepts that could boost the rating here. 2
Quality: The quality of this utility was good or average. The pieces of different terrains that were shown were very nicely designed. The unit you are given to explore the first area of terrain and a nice waterfall sound enhance the quality of the utility. I was disappointed to find out that after exploring the first scene the author gave instructions to type the cheat ‘marco polo’ to see the remaining map area. Had the approach for the first area been taken for the rest of the design portions a higher score could be given. 3
Instructions: The instructions for this design were very poor. You are only given two instructions throughout the entire utility and the hint sections were left blank. The instructions that were given only told you to “Explore the area” and “Use marco polo to see the rest of the map”. It seems as though this design was intended to be more of a showcase or an inspirational design. If this was the case instructions should have been given on how to replicate the design. If intended as a map copy template, instructions should have been given on the method of map copying. In both situations instructions were absent. 1
Overall: A nice showcase of well designed terrains but lacks the many features of an informative and usefull utility. 2.0
