The Concept



Thanks for downloading this utility, I hope you find it useful. The 2-D Effect follows the principle that in AoK's 2-D graphics, you can create some pretty weird effects by placing objects together in a particular way. More then that I won't let on, you'll have to see the utility for yourself. I've included several little tricks and gimmicks, some taken from other people, others invented by myself.




Unzipping Instructions


Unzip the .scx file into the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\Scenario folder. The .ai and .per files are inbedded in the game. You don't need this readme file to play, you can do whatever you like with it.

Version Changes


-- All text messages are twenty seconds longer.

-- The Rock Giant now looks more convincing, and lots of extra eye-candy in general has been added.

-- An extra trick has been added (upping the number to seven).

-- A few small bugs have been fixed, nothing really worth mentioning.

-- You now have the option of replaying the utility.

UTILITY: The author intends this utility to highlight the Two-Dimensional effects to the player. That concept is not new, as the author does not fail to mention. But the author highlights it as a useful part of map design.
The utility shows seven possible tricks and a quick explanation of each. Their creation was explained well, and left little to be desired, providing a full course to a new designer. However an experienced designer did not gain that much from that tour. The first two were semi-new to me, the rock giant was completely new to me, but the rest were old, with the Mosque-collection going far back. The utility brings them together to make a point, but the author does not follow through to built a new concept on top of that.

PRESENTATION: As I mentioned, the utility goes through seven examples with explanations of each, it can also be replayed, which makes it easy for those who play it through the Standard Game. The author summed up his idea at the beginning and restated it at the end, so the instructions were excellent.
It brings together many ideas to bring forth a section of map design, unknown to many new designers.

OVERALL: 4.75 ~ 4.5 +

SUGGESTION: The only flaw here was that you did not build a conclusion to your utility, and you did not enlighten the designer quite as much as you could.

This is amazing, some very good eye-candy. Rated 4.5 because there are some amazing effects that look realistic, howver some like the rock giant aren't!

This Utility is a flat out 4.5! It is one of the best utilities I have ever seen, the most usefull too. In this utility the author shows the player various tricks to take advantage of the 2d graphics of AOK. He shows that you can makes trees taller, towers larger, and even make battlements. The only thing I didn't see was the rock giant. It was hard to figure and not much information about it was given. That's why I give a 4.5 out of 5.
