Ive played many lotr maps and made many myslef and i was blown away at the start of this

PLAYABLILITY: 4
I was immediatly into the game when i had to gather the 180 men. At first i thought it seemed too long but by the end of the game i understood why. The AI of Gondor could be made because i was attacked once or twice by a small group of gondor pikeman. The cutscence with the music was excellent. I didnt notice any bugs although Minas Morgul barracks are a little crowded but there were lots of other alternatives

BALANCE: 5
This map was definatly a challange and although it seemed very hard at first i was able to come through when i noticed you could advance to the next age. From here on in it was very well balanced having North and south ithillien spread out the enemys men so they wernt all attacking at the one area. The hardest part for me was when farimir and his knights arrived and destroyed a good 80 men but after upgrading i was able to come through

CREATIVITY: 4
Their was defiantly a good use of tricks here when farimirs knighs arrived and the entire army located at the black gate which was well presented. The names where perfect except for a few which could make this map even better if given names. The Trolls were an excellent idea to use the monkey boy.

MAP DEGISN: 5
The design was perfect ive seen many Lotr campaigns that use a small design scale which loses alot of effect whereas here you have used a large scale and fitted mordor and osgiliath perfectly the city is perfect and mordor couldn't be any better.

STORY / INSTRUCTIONS: 5
Any lotr story is great to me and this 1 was extremly well thought out of to take out the outer lying towns of Osgiliath. The instructions make perfect sense although some people might find its alot to read but for me it was a must do.

OVERALL:
I thought this had to be one of the best Lotr maps playing as Mordor and the effort put into this map was extremly good. This is a must download for any lotr fan. The sounds make this greater so make sure you install em!

Great work again!

Excellent ideas make this one of the most compulsively playable scenarios on the entire Blacksmith. As GeNeRaL_AnZaC before me, I thought at first that 180 men was a bit much but they are absolutely essential, as it turns out! I found no bugs whatsoever, and the cutscenes were very well directed. This comes from a veteran of many an LOTR map, though it was only today that rwilde spurred me into reviewing anything.

Balance: 4
Almost perfect! It seemed a bit difficult at first (mainly because Gondor attacked me almost constantly) but with skill, dexterity and even a big portion of luck I came through.

Creativity: 4
As much as I love this map, I must admit, it's been tried before. The Blacksmith is absolutely AWASH with LOTR maps, most lacking that essential sparkle, but this map has many innovative ideas pushing Creativity up to a 4.

Map Design: 5
A detailed, accurate map of the portions of Middle-Earth concerned and amazing perception of which areas will be suitable for attack points etc., this map is one of the best I've seen.

Story/Instructions: 5
A detailed, accurate history and clear objectives, I found it highly enjoyable just to read them for hours on end (yes, I'm weird like that). Not a single spelling mistake, though there were some grammatical mistakes (including absence of capital letters for some words that needed them) but hey, I'm not complaining.

Additional Comments:
A must-download for every lover of fine scenarios. Absolutely brilliant, and compulsively playable.

Well, first of all, I must commend Mashek on being faithful to the book and not the movie. Secondly, I have to commend him for making a B&D LotR scenario instead of a RPG one, which are really getting annoying by now.

Now, on to the review.

Playability: 5

Great, just great. No bugs I noticed, and many nice tricks and such stuff which made the game truly interesting. Accurate portrayal made it even better, it really seemed Mordorish. The fact that I was attacked, even though the attack was really pitiful, in the beginning made the game more tense and reminded me that it's not just "build your troops and kill 'em all" but a true war, with balanced sides and similar (though the attacks could have been a little stronger). Fencing off these small attacks were a good time-killer, since I had to build up my forces first. The game was made even more fun due to the difference between troops: I loved sieging enemy gates and stuff with my "trolls". But the trolls were hard to control however, I couldn't task the altogether. Is it just me?
The complexity of the battle was a welcome change. No trebuchets, on which I always rely, and no cavalry, on which I rely even more, meant that I had to come up with new strategies to attack my enemies, which added the fun. I welcomed commanding the evil side, just look at my name.

Balance: 4

Good, but could be better. I battled the enemy who was actually outnumbered by me, but I still lost more troops, making it somewhat frustrating. The map was easy though, since the attacks made against me were quite weak and easily repellable. This eliminated the feel of danger to my positions, especially before attacking Osgiliath. Though I believe the enemy attacks were weakened in sake of realism, no? So, realistic, but easy.

Creativity: 5

The concept of being on the evil side is the definite boost for this factor. The fact that most troops were renamed increased the pleasure even more. It was also quite creative to put those outlying forts to action. It was not present in the book's timeline but oh well. I liked the idea of mercenaries (were they easterling mercs?) existing and being recruitable.

Map design: 4

The map design was pretty good, but lacked the essential eye candy. The forests of Ithilien were just Oak Forests and Flowers, which didn't quite make it. Some smaller lakes and ponds existed, but that was it. The forts were lacking eye candy and were layed out quite empty in terms of buildings. Mordor, yes, is a empty place, but could still be better. Mordor wasn't completely lacking all fauna in the north, there were bushes and similar there. And there were practically no orc forts or slave settlements, save for few. Still much better than a random map though.

Story/Instructions: 5

Accurate hints and instructions. Given the circumstances, there could have been more story in the history section (all I saw was a timetable). And funny enough, you warned about the trolls weaknesses twice. The in-game story, however, was extremely well layed out. Nothing more to say here.

+ points

*Great playability
*Large battles
*Accurate portrayal of Ithilien and Mordor

- points

*Lacking eye candy
*Too strong starting positions
*Little history

In conclusion, be sure to download this campaign, it is a notch above the other LotR B&D scenarios.

And if you want to create a Beleriand scenario, just read the Silmarillion.

This campaign was completely playable except for one and only one problem.
When making the 180 ork army for Sauron, I had to delete some villagers to
get to the army size needed to continue.

The rest of the game was absolutly fine. Playability was fine!

Balance: 5
The balence for this game was perfect. Though I had a far more larger army than Gondor did, the Gondorians had far more powerful units than my men. Also too, even if I used the supply cheats, it really didn't help much. As I said before, the enemy armies may be few but they are so powerful, they can whipe out just about any unit I send except the Ring Raiths, the Orc commanders, and the Cave Trolls. This definatly deserves a 5.0!

Creativity: 5
Another obvious five. There were many interesting trigger tricks used, the map design was incredible, and the story line is superb, even though most people already know the story.

Map Design: 5
Again, 5.0, the map design of this campaign was great! There was not one inch of the map that was left blank, including areas that cannot be seen without the help of Marco, Polo.

Story/Instructions: 5
The story line was great! I loved it. You did a great job with making that up. The instructions were not confusing at all. Good work!

Additional Comments:
This is DEFINATLY a recommended download. I'm very sad to see that it only has about 2800 downloads. This should be more like 5000. OH well, maybe the higher rating will make more people download this awsome campaign.

Good work Mashek!

Oh No! Not another Lord of the Rings Scenario! Just Kidding!

War of the Ring by Mashek is a Lord of the Rings Scenario in which you play as the forces of Mordor and have to conquer the lands of Ithilien.

Playability: 5
War of the Ring is an extremely enjoyable and exciting scenario. It is different from other lord of the Rings scenarios because this time you get to play as Mordor and the forces of evil. The game is very enjoyable and can be played over and over again. I found no bugs and had no lag. You had to use a lot of new and different statergies because you are not aloud horses or trebuchets.

Balance: 4
War of the Ring is a very challenging scenario. You have to build up your army quickly, whilst being attack by your enemies. You control a lot of different places like Bara Dur, Cirith Ungol and the Black Gate. You have to build an army worthy of Sauron whilst being attack at all your different bases. You have to be at two different places at once. However you do get good defences around your bases which make it easier and you have some powerful heroes like Gorbag, Shagrat and the Nazgul. You can also hire Easterling soldier’s too. When you do start attacking Ithilien you have to attack fast. The enemy have a large army and defend well. Their fortress is surrounded by a moat so you have to cross a bridge. The game is very challenging but not impossible. You can beat it if you use the right tactics and strategies.

Creativity: 5
The game is really, really creative. The idea of being on the side of Sauron and Mordor adds to the score. I have seen any other scenario do this before. The scenario has a great map design and story too. It really like the creatures of Middle Earth too. You have added Shelob, and Iron Boars which you can’t hunt. The scenario also has some of J.R.R. Tolkein’s great characters like The Mouth of Sauron, The Witch King of Angmar and Gothmog. There are also places of Mordor added like Bara Dur and Cirith Ungol. I also liked the idea of being able to buy the Easterling Army for a certain amount of food.

Map Design: 5
The map design is perfect. It is the best interpretation of Mordor I have seen in Age of Empires. The Mountains and ruins spread around looked great. The Map includes most of the famous places from Mordor like Cirith Ungol, Bara Dur, and the Black Gate. It also had a great interpretation of Ithilien. The forest, the river, the grassey plains were outstanding. The map had some great uses of elevation, cliffs and mountains. It had some good terrain Mixing and Eye-Candy like the lair of Shelob. Even the places that can’t be seen without using “Marco Polo” are design beautifully. The fortresses of Ithilien and Mordor are also really pretty. They have buildings that are well spaced out and look just right.

Story/Instructions: 5
The scenario had a great story line. Starting from Sauron telling you to make an army worthy of his name and then to the brutal battle of Ithilien. I loved the whole story. It was fun, enjoyable, exciting, entertaining and interesting. It kept me playing all the way through. The Instructions too are clear, easy to understand and written well. They told me exactly what to do and help me all the way through the game. The re is also a great hints page giving me helpful tips on what to do if I get stuck.

Additional Comments:
The War of the Ring is a highly enjoyable scenario which can be played over and over again. If you like Sauroun and wish to serve under the banner of the Red Eye then this scenario is a Must for you.

Thanks for such a great game Mashek!
