~ The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring ~
I) Version 1.1 - April 7th, 2002
This is the revised version (even the house bug fixed). So new downloaders, you've got it good! Download it now! Old downloaders, sorry about the bug, i've fixed it!
II) Introduction
Greetings! Thank you for downloading the Lord of the Rings. It is my attempt to re-create the classic book in terms of Age of Empires gameplay. It stays as true to the book as possible. If you've never read the book or seen the movie, then you're missing something! If you have, and you are a Tolkien fan, then this should be real a treat for you! It covers the part of the Fellowship of the Ring that includes the flight from Hobbiton, the journey to Bucklebury, and the voyage through the Old Forest and into Bree.
III) Installation
1) Unzip to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II, or to wherever else you installed it
2) All files should fall into the right folders
3) Load AOEII: The Conquerors, and play the campaign!

I see you mentioned that cannot find your books. If ever you need advice on how the story goes jut e-mail me. I know everything about it. backgrounds on every character and place, straight back to the creation of middle earth. I am not making LOTR levels but I am making some Silmarillion levels. It would be interesting to be able to play the whole history of Arda. |

Well, something unfortunate happened. About three weeks ago my harddrive, well, it crashed. Everything I had on it got erased, including all the work on Lord of the Rings. Why is this a setback? Well, as of now I don't have the enthusiasm for scenario-making. It's a) Hard, b) Tiring, c) Time-consuming. So.. if anyone wants to take over for me, I'll let you add on to this scenario and release your own Lord of the Rings campaign.

If you can't get a hold of a goblin modpack then why don't you just use the jaguar warrior for a goblin infteray(sorry about spelling) and a Plummed Archer for Goblin Archers and just change there names there done. Also if you need a balroc mod then you will be waiting a while because nobody could be bothered putting that much effort into trying to change a siege oncar into a Flaming best that looks a bit like diablo called a balroc. |

The Fellowship of the Ring is a single scenario, a RPG, it is the best LotR adaptation I have played so far. The scenario covers the shire, where you start your journey in Hobbiton to Bucklebury, through the old forest and arrive in Bree. Before you start playing this scenario be sure you also downloaded Campaign ID 936 LORD OF THE RINGS: SOUNDPACK.
PLAYABILITY: Truly a great adaptation of LotR, I enjoyed the scenario a lot and this category could have scored higher if there wouldn't be the confusing part at Crickhollow house. Merry vanishes to the left, inviting you to the house. First I tried the towers near the barrack and had to go to saved game, because my villagers got stuck. After I found the right house, nothing happened and exploring the area with the only unit left didn't help either. To delete a new acquired house to make a trigger work is rather unusual and after that the view change does not work. 3
BALANCE: The scenario was played on hard, it is a bit easy, not really challenging for the experienced player. If you never had hero villagers before, the challenge in the first part lies in concentrating to avoid to send them to cut wood, loosing their AP and people might find the Old Forest demanding. For a RPG the balance is above average, not being in the primary goals of the author, who did a fantastic job, following the books beginning of LotR. 4
CREATIVITY: The scenarios best part, the sound files, nice triggers adding to the game play, renaming units, buildings and places, which gave the right feel for the story and the map design was creative. 5
MAP DESIGN: It is a fantasy world and so was the map. Actually some places where like I imagined them to be. 4
STORY/INSTRUCTIONS: A movie screen like BMP. The adaptation of the story was far above average, clear objectives, good hints, but lacking at Crickhollow. 4
OVERALL: The best LotR scenario at the blacksmith.
OBSERVATIONS: The auther posted on 7/18/02 that he gave up the project of submitting a complete LotR campaign. The scenario has today about 4000 downloads which is the second place of all campaigns posted in 2002 and still going strong. I truly hope that StG Phoenix reconsiders his decision due to the great success.
SUGGESTIONS: From habit players garrison in towers, town centres, castles, rams and transports, especially if you tell them to do so. Play test your scenario in that regard. The bug at Crickhollow house existed already in the .cpx uploaded correctly in the scenario section 2/15/02, in the file uploaded 3/10/02 and still in the edit of 4/8/02. If you can't fix it, make a virtue of necessity, have an on screen text say "delete the blue house" and later press "," the view change will go to Gandalf. Your scenario won't work correctly on standard difficulty as the black riders will not attack villagers. Mention to play moderate and hard in the hints, have a trigger make the player loose on standard and add some challenge for the experienced players. To improve story/instructions some background about the story and places in the history section would be appreciated.
IN CLOSING: A must download for all LotR fans. |

STG_Phoenix's Lord of the Rings is a one scenario campaign that follows Frodo's journey from Hobbiton through the Shire and finally into Bree.
PLAYABILITY: 4
STG_Phoenix does a tremendous job in his adaptation of the Fellowship of the Ring. His scenario is fun to play, and really gets you excited if you're a Lord of the Rings fan. He followed virtually everything out of the book, including quite an adventure in the Old Forest, a meeting with Tom Bombadil, a journey to Buckland, and an encounter with the Barrow-Wights. The only reason he doesn't get a "5" is because of the trigger bug when Frodo and the gang reach his new home at Crickhollow in Buckland. You have to delete the house to continue, and it took me around three tries to realize I had to do that.
BALANCE: 3
This scenario was fun, like I said, but it was pretty easy if you know what to do, especially since you spelled everything out in the hints. A few hints are nice and appreciated, a complete walkthrough might be unnecessary, but I still appreciate your effort. It took me awhile to find all five turkeys in the forest, but there really weren't many difficulties in this scenario, at least until the Barrow-Wight. And I had TOO much trouble, most likely, in defeating him. Merry came very close to dying and I had to use the watch tower you gave me since Tom Bombadil didn't do much fighting. Barrow-Wight: too hard. Rest of scenario: pretty darn easy.
CREATIVITY: 5
Your best category. You virtually dominated in creativity. This scenario was really amazing and your creation of Bombadil and the Barrow-Wights, not to mention Buckland, were all very cool. You definitely put a lot of time in to make sure it was good. Great work here!
MAP DESIGN: 5
Another great category. The journey from Hobbiton to Buckland's design was fabulous, and Buckland and the Elf village were very good. The entrance to the Old Forest was fun, and I'm glad you made two roads we could take. The only things I was disappointed with were your lack of detail to make the Shire (near Hobbiton) very beautiful, and the Old Forest was a little unrealistic with jungle trees. I would've stuck to oak and mostly pine forests. Still, great designing none-the-less.
STORYLINE: 5
Bravo, captain! I liked your description in the Instructions; they were very detailed and well-written, and your history was a good quote. You put a lot of time into writing your hints, and though they might've been unnecessary for balance purposes, it was helpful to have in there and you put a lot of time into writing them, good work!
CONCLUSION: A must download for any Lord of the Rings fan, and this scenario is likely interesting and realistic enough to turn one who's in "the dark" onto Tolkien's masterpiece. |
