“ACSC - Day of the Red Moon” is a cutscene scenario for the current AoKH Cutscene Scenario Competition. It tells the tale of two countries, Tzech and Ungari.
Playability: - This cutscene has definite replay value. The playability is definitely enhanced by the story as well as the music further. I watched this cutscene four times and it hasn’t grown tiresome at any point. Things start off slowly and gain momentum as it continues. The playability didn’t keep me glued to my seat but it definitely kept me entertained.
Balance: - The balance following the guidelines of the Review Tutorial scores highest.
Creativity: - There are quite a lot of creative things included in this cutscene. Use of the Invisibility Cloak, Porex villager, an Eagle flying over the landscape, explosions using petards, a horse pen, as well as the city preparing the defenses which, I particularly liked. It’s fair to say there are a lot of creative elements of this cutscene, and you’ll be doing well to see them all first time around.
Map Design: - The map design of this project excellent. From some of the good use of map copying with buildings to the landscaping I found it all at a consistently high level. My only mention was at Colarin’s home you could see palisade wall ends at the entrance, which looked out of place. Areas I particularly liked the design of include the valley which, the Eagle circles over and the Tzech Castle.
Story/Instructions: - The story is good throughout with the plot progressing gradually, from the border outposts, to the city and then to the battle. There are no major twists or turns, but the prophecy dialogue needed to be explained more, it would have added further depth to the plot. The story as I briefly mentioned earlier is greatly enhanced by the music used, some of which is part of the score for Batman Begins by Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard, both excellent composers.
The instructions throughout were smart with use of multiple lines to continue dialogue after one line had been revealed. The only error I saw was at the end when the credits are rolling and squares are displayed at the bottom where the author has hit enter to go down a line.
Overall: - A great cutscene with some strong features in its favour, elements of creativity, good music and strong narrative are here aplenty. On a final note, the names seem remarkably similar to the Czech Republic & Hungary! : -)

Wow! Thanks for the review BrandNewCar :-)
I just have one comment regarding the 'credits' text at the end of the cutscene. I'm glad you informed me of the error with the boxes. On my computer for some reason or another this doesn't happen, however I have access to another computer so I tried it there and behold, what you have said is true.
So whether this bug/error occurs on many computers or only a few, I don't know, however I shall have a go at fixing it.
Even though it is a minor bug, it does degrade the experience, but I will probably only update the file once the cut-scene competition has ended.
Thanks once again!

I thought it was pretty good. It's amazing the way you can make a cut-scene so much more dramatic and intense just with the right music :D |

At the end unless it was my computer(yes i had it on :normal:1024x768:moderate:)the archers fired and i heard arrows, the ugh! of death, and then the screen zoomed back to where the hero was but everything was black for a few seconds then it was light but he was already dead. Just a minor slowness at the end. Other than that it was an excellent Cut-scene.[Edited on 08/21/06 @ 07:07 PM]

Thanks for your comments Fenrisulfr. It is amazing isn't it ;-), and I'm particularly happy about how well I thought it fitted into the story and the scenes. I actually spent quite an amount of time sorting through my collection to find the ones that would fit just right. I had the beginning and ending music sorted out right from the beginning, but it took a couple of tries before I had the middles ones selected to my satisfaction.
By the way, Crimson Tide is some of my favourite music :D
Thanks for the comments mindyber :)
Just a quick comment about the slowness at the end. My intention for that particular section of the cut-scene was to let the sounds 'do the talking', instead of providing visual aids in addition to the sounds, if you follow what I mean. Hence this is why you will experience a partial moment of black screen at that point.
I also tried to time the revealer in with the sound that you'll hear getting louder and suddenly coming to a peak, which is where the revealers kick in. I agree the map revealer is slightly behind the 'peak' in the music/sound effect, but - since this point in the scene, and indeed the whole cut-scene, is goverened by timer triggers - when I shortened the timer to activate the revealers, the music was too far behind, and I felt that it detracted from the scene instead of enhancing it. Which brings us to the current arrangement, and I feel that it is barely noticeable and may even perhaps add a little bit more to the scene...
Thanks again.[Edited on 08/22/06 @ 12:30 AM]

I didn't think much could beat your LOTR prologue but that just did it! Everything about it was perfect, sound, music, everything! From opening the gates to making it seem as though the trebuchets were being carried, i found myself begging for more!
The triggers worked perfectly and everything that i thought could've happened.. happened! The first thing that got me was how you tasked the eagle and it moved soo realisticly- Something wrong with spelling there.. I dont know how you did it but it obviously worked!
I didn't find a single bug nor a single moment where i thought.. "Something else could be happening here" (a bit like gandalfs speech in LOTR Prologue). I dont agree that it was slow at the end either, i think that was great the way you zoomed away while colarin was shot, it seemed to make it much more dramatic. I may be a bit late for viewing this but i reckon this should have won ACSC. I got a bit stuck on immortal preys text and so it's either my lust for quick blood, funky triggers and movie music, or the fact my mum kept poking me to get off the computer whilst i watched I.P that makes me prefer this.
You have a natural talent at making cutscenes, and possibly and unnatural one too lol, because that was amazing! I usually seem to come up with at least one tip for the things i've reviewed/ commented on (about 3) but i cant find anything here! Not one unit went out of place, -like they seem to do when i try to make cutscenes etc. and everything was perfectly timed. Simply fantastic!
I know your probably bored stiff of hearing all this by now, but i felt the need to comment on how well this was done.[Edited on 10/11/06 @ 04:48 PM]

"I may be a bit late for viewing this but i reckon this should have won ACSC."
The reason why Immortal Prey won the contest was, in my opinion, because of its superb fantastical atmosphere, terrain and highly in-depth characterisation. Its brilliant use of dialogue, suspense, intriguing scenes are what kept me and I am assuming the other two judges hooked for the whole play and thus influenced our scores.
Day of the Red Moon is a fantastic scenario at that too, with brillaint scenes, superb and complimenting sounds and music, and an overall well told story. The judging was hard and close, but I think Day of the Red Moon done brilliantly and the author should be proud of his second place out of 9 or so contestants.[Edited on 10/12/06 @ 05:56 AM]

Thanks Arfazm for your wonderful comments! And no, I'm not bored with it. ;-)
"and the author should be proud of his second place"
And that he is! To be completely honest, I had no idea how well this scenario would be received and I'm still stoked that I did so well to come second in the competition! However, I would have always voted Crasher's Immortal Prey ahead of mine. I think it is a most deserving winner, and a spectacular cut-scene.
Thanks everyone :)[Edited on 10/12/06 @ 07:05 AM]
