The Battle of Bannockburn was fought during the Wars of Scottish Independence, and resulted in a significant victory for the Scots over the English. This campaign, made by Courtjester1, gives us a chance to fight it ourselves, fighting with the Scottisch troops against an English army under the command of Edward II.
Playability: 4
When I downloaded this campaign, I didn't know what to expect about the qualities of the designer. When I played it, I was impressed by the quality of the scenario. There are not many scenarios who can "grab" the player from the beginning, but this is one of them. The many sounds used in this scenario contributed to a great atmosphere, so the scenario had a good feeling about it.
However, there were two things that made me deduct a point from playability.
The first thing was gamecrash, when killing a English hero. It wasn't hard to fix the problem, but it was annoying none the less.
The second thing was the lag in the scenario, which I experienced mostly in the attack on the English at the end of the scenario.
Balance: 5
Based on my playing experiences on Easy and Moderate difficulty level, I come to the conclusion that this scenario was balanced very well. I had to reload a few times, but it didn't become frustrating.
The different difficulty levels work really well, as the scenario gets easier on easy difficulty.
Creativity: 4
This scenario has a good deal of creativity. For example, this scenario used the extended HP trick, invented by MCrnigoj. Furthermore, this scenario used a system to change the morale of both armies when important characters died in battle.
Map Design: 4
The map utilized in The Battle of Bannockburn is nice, but there are still things that could be improved. For example, the field would improve a lot if there was some more terrain mixing, for example adding more patches of different types of grass and maybe a little dirt 3.
I didn't really like the part of the map were Edward II stood, as it was a bit too muddy in my opinion. Removing some of the paths would be a good thing to do and might also reduce the lag.
Story/Instructions: 4
The instructions given were clear, making sure the player was never confused about what to do.
The author made good use of the history and instructions area's to explain what the scenario was about and why Edward II attacked the Scottish.
In conclusion: Courtjester1 has done a very good job in creating this scenario. Well worth the 15 MB download for everyone who likes this kind of game!
