THE STORY:
A nameless Shogun is haunted by the same dream every night: He sees his carriage race through a gorge, fleeing from an invisible enemy. It breaks down on a bridge, and he hears his own death scream inside the smashing wood and metal.
A wise woman gives him a cryptic prophecy: "When the wheel breaks, the shogun breaks." The Shogun fears a rebellion and starts such bloody counter measures that this actually plants the seeds of rebellion in people's hearts.
The story is told by Ronin Akira, who lost his daiymo to the Shogun's suspicions.
His revenge seems out of reach. Then something happens which looks like the prophecy is about to be fulfilled...
THE GAME:
Download the campaign file into your Age of Empires II/Campaign folder and the soundfiles into your Age of Empires II/sound/scenario folder.
Recommended settings: Normal speed, sound turned off. You can speed up or slow down Age of Kings by pressing the "+" and "-" button though.
This is a fixed-force scenario, but the difficulty level varies greatly. "Standard" is quite easy, "Moderate" gives experienced players a fair challenge. "Hard" is for people who like to micromanage and use every tactic trick in the book. I hope you'll enjoy this one-scenario campaign!
NOTES:
Thanks to everyone who playtested the scenario! The names are in the history section. Special thanks to Anastasia for providing me with a some great soundfiles.
UPDATE:
25th June 2007: Added a bonus zip file with a PDF which tells the rest of the story, and an epilogue scenario. |

Shame part 2 will never exist. But an "honorable" end to your esteemed career as a developer for AOE2. I hope you have ended up in a big time game development company, your talent would be wasted in a desk job. |

One more masterpiece by Ingo van Thiel, this charismatic scenario designer, who knows to make a very good plot where he can mix the legend with the real history. I have to congratulate him for his great work. It is an awesome scenario -which can move the player- with a very good story, great playability and very good sound files.
P.S.: I think that it would be better if the author could combine the main story, the epilogue and the story from the "readme" file in a campaign...[Edited on 07/08/12 @ 04:11 AM]

Played it many times and same results each time even after new download. Get into either tower at Ronin camp and crash city. The Ronin Leader won't fight. Can't get back across that damn bridge. That is as far as I get. It makes no difference how I make the rounds checking on attacks. A trigger or two not happening would be my best guess. |

Hi cmeb4uleave, thank you for the bug report! This one is new to me. I designed and tested "When the Wheel Breaks" on Windows XP a long time ago and never ran into these problems. However, the scenario uses a lot of "hidden units" on the map and in its triggers, maybe newer Windows systems cannot handle these. But that is just a guess...
Which system do you use? |

I have a 3.4 Ghz iMac with windows 8.1 OEM version on the windows side using BOOT CAMP. I was finally able to get to destroying the Ronin camp towers and the Leader fight. The instructions indicated to get into the towers ASAP which did not work. What worked was killing all his henchmen, then entering the towers one by one and left them burning. I was clicking again in the trigger setup because the Ronin leader then changed diplomacy and was ready to fight after the discussion. I ended up finishing with the rescue of Jun as well. As a slinger Jun killed nearly all of the troops by staying on the rubble side of the trees. The troops didn't come after him and one by one got killed--took a while. Still had two cannoneers and a samurai chasing him into the water for a swim. Thanks for your campaign and interest in the web site comments like mine. |
