THE SKIRMISH v3
By: Shadow667
Last Updated: June 3, 2007
The British forces in the area have been pushed back into a trap; the Goths have surrounded them on all sides and are beginning to pour into the British encampment. Many forces have already died up to this point, and the number of British forces are dwindling. The only way to stop the invading force, it seems, is to guard the Lone Tower and defend what the British has left of the camp. A suppressing attack on the incoming Goth forces will surly fail, and there's no way out of the situation they've gotten themselves into.
Will you be able to fend off the Goths? Or will you be overrun?
Sound files are now required and are now included in the download for convenience. If you already have the sound files from previous versions of the scenario however, these are the same, and you do not need to re-extract the ones in this zip. Without the sound files, the map will crash. Plus, they add a whole new atmosphere to playing the scenario.
In my humble opinion, this is a MUST download. Comments and reviews are more than welcome.
Enjoy!

Umm, how to put it...
THAT WAS A COOL MAP
and yes the music does make it all the better.
however despite how great it was after playing it a second time i found it easy. even on hard but that was because i knew what to do cause of those nice flags (thanks be to thee for that) i think that you should have made the flags a little less helpfull, maybe make the timer a little longer so instead of 1 attack every 1 sec say one attack every 3 sec but the health i think was fine cause there was so many people. Another way you could make it a little fairer for the horde is make so the lord jguy (the guy you need for the flags) might have to be in a certain area for them to work making the use of flags come at a price (not being able to use one of your best characters)
with all that said if any of it made sense, i would jsut like to close with:
one of the best FF ive played |

Make sure you have version 1.0c of TC, because while it may be compatible with other versions, I am not positive. Also, if you have permanently installed any mods, I'd say to look into that as well. You may also want to clear out your temp folders and internet temp folders, then try re-downloading the file, as a bad tmp file can screw up any download.
Tell me if any of this helps. :) |

The Skirmish is a defend-the-spot scenario. It lasts for 30 minutes and might prove quite a challenge.
Playability: 3
I normally like defending scenario's, and quite much. But this one had some major issues that tore down the playability rating. First of all, it all happens in such a small, confined space. Secondly, it is just so long. Of course, 30 minutes is really short for a AoK game, or a real battle, but if you have to stay at one excat place, use so little units, it just wears old, and starts to get monotonous (did I spell that right?) and boring. No real twists or stuff, giving it a 3 for playability.
Balance: 4
This scenario offered 4[sic!] customized different difficulty levels. But it was still too easy on the first 3. The fourth proved quite a challenge, tho', but I doubt anyone would try to play it on Hardest on the first try. After you've played the scenario, however, the reasons stated above in the playability section really take down the re-play value. I first played it on Easy, and that sucked. Then, I went to the 3rd level (hard) and it wasn't still too tough, though much different. I only played it on Hardest, since I wanted to review it, and I felt it unfair if I rated the Balance without playing the Hardest. The final 2 seconds really spice up things, though, as the first 3 levels didn't make a dramatic difference. If the player is certain that he is uber in AoK, I recommend instantly playing it on hardest. The player will probably lose, but the experience will be much better. At least play it first on Hard.
Creativity: 3
Defend-the-spot isn't exactly very new. I hoped the creator had spiced up things in different creativity factors, but I was proved wrong. The victory trigger was set in the beginning, the were no new objectives during the game, and it seemed that the only trigger were timer counters and difficulty choosers. And the spawns. No creativity in map design, or story. At least there were custom named units.
Map Design: 3
Weak, pretty weak. There was a large patch of grass 1, which really didn't look good. There were leaves used as paths, and no eye candy at all. The buildings were weirdly placed, too. Just three houses, the tower and two pavilions. The forest wasn't too bad, but the player doesn't reach them anyway. Therefore, a 3.
Story/Instructions: 4
The stroy was quite weak, but the guidelines clearly state that if the is any story, it's a 4 or 5. The hints and instructions were probably the best factor of all, detailed and long. But the lack of a detailed story just won't allow a 5.
Overall, though the rating might be harsh and not too high, I still recommend playing this scenario. A nice time-killer, and not really too bad in total. Download it, it only takes 30 minutes, so playing it isn't as bad as it might seem from this review. |
