Version: The Conquerors
This game is a blow-out so don't expect any thrills or surprises. Back on the old MS Zone the land DM players mostly played a version of Arabia in rated. For water maps, we played either Islands (1v1) or Team Islands for 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4. Spanish are THE dominant water civ, period. I haven't played a water map in years so I am a bit slow, but watch the basic start-up (Blue, Spanish) and the the development of the action. Winning on a water map entails two phases; Phase I = map control, which means gaining naval superiority, controling the front shoreline and the corners while preventing the opposition from landing on your island. At this time you will need to get economy and trade going as well. Phase II = landing, gaining a foot-hold, and overtaking your opponents island. Note how effective Spanish cannon galleons are at projecting control inland. Also note how playing defensively on this map is a sure way to lose....BADLY...

For anyone downloading this map, please note: if you play any of the Real World AoC maps, or maps such as Med, Scand, etc...any map that has a large body of water....and you want to win at it, you need a naval strategy. Here is a quick list of THE BEST "water map" civs:
Spanish, Vikings, Koreans, Turks, Saracens, Persians, and Chinese. If you want to know why..post a comment and I will be happy to explain in detail.

Well, I agree with Spanish, probably Vikings and Koreans for their unique boat unit, Turks okay, but I prefer Byzantines over Saracens, Persians and Chinese on a water map, maybe even Teutons.

First, remember I am talking DM. Secondly, when you say "we", who are you speaking for? I still get guys coming into a Tm Islands map in a 3v3 pick civs taking Teutons, Mongols, Franks, Goths, or even worse, Mayans and Aztecs.

Remember I am talking DM. First of all, Byz get a full compliment of ships, and have the best FF ships in the game...but their vills build slow. Saracens have excellent galleys and also get cannon galleys. I won 80% of my 1v1 Islands games on the old AoK in rated (I was 2k+) using Persians...dock bonus, galleys, cannon galleons, fast vills at building, and you can land units (Eles and hand cannons) that will wipe out an opponents base and NOT cost wood. Chinese have top demo boats, get-off fast with the extra vills, and have great galleys. Teutons suck on an island map...I have never lost to anyone playing Teuts on water. When AoC came out, Spanish were so dominant that nobody played any of the other civs anymore in rated...unless we forced them to, ie, 3v3, no duplicate civs on same team.

Well, consider that this is a DM 2v2 post. I kind of think that is a given. Btw...Persians are an excellent civ on a water map in both DM and RM. Once you hit castle in RM with Persians on a water map you can do some serious damage. Turks on the other hand are strictly a DM civ...water or otherwise...all of their bonuses and top units are gunpowder and expensive.
