This is a short 10-minute cutscene/ tutorial that elaborates on the uses of the OLD-EXPLORER unit which is rarely used by scenario designers. It will provide some useful information for all scenario designers, novices and experts alike.
Update 20/07: I have added optional data files in which the OLD-EXPLORER unit (and all other unlockable units) has been unlocked using Genied. Ingame instructions on how to install the files are also added. |

This utility demonstrates the uses of an otherwise thought to be useless unit, 'OLD-EXPLORER'. Basically it is like a movable map revealer which reveals even less of the map than the map revealer. It is more useful to use than a porex villager at times - because it reveals less, can not be attacked by enemies, does not show on pressing . key , doesn't take up population and doesn't have to bother with tasking a villager to porex etc. The disadvantage is that units can't target it, unlike porex they cannot create ripples in shallows or hold gates open.
The utility is good and useful, and contains a humorous example scenario and good instructions. The only thing you could have mentioned was that you can task individual old explorers using AokTS, and not have to depend on area conditions (I tried this and it works).
One thing I didn't remark much on earlier was the superb map design. The fire looked great and there was a new type of fence.
The updated version also contains some data files, however they are not really necessary as the same thing can be done with GeniED2.
Additional Comments:
Thanks to the author for bringing to light the creative uses of an 'almost' useless unit. Which goes on to show how versatile Aok is and how there are still lot many things to be discovered or invented in it.[Edited on 08/03/07 @ 12:02 PM]

Silver Serpent has made an excellent introduction for all designers on how to use the OLD-EXPLORER unit, an invisible, moving Map Revealer. Personally, I've never seen it in a scenario before, but I'm prepared to see it in quite many, after this file's been released.
The reason I give this a 4.5 instead of a full score is that the end of the tutorial doesn't have much learning-value, mainly used to fill out the scenario with the story.
CONCENRING THE DATA FILE: Well, if the downloader doesn't have GeniEd it can sure be useful, but if he has then it's much easier to do it by yourself, since you dont have to download one megabyte extra to use GeniEd. It's a good addition, but not always necessary.
OVERALL: An excellent tutorial

This utility is very useful to both beginners and veterans. Not many people know what OLD-EXPLORER is, and those who do know that probably do not know that it can follow a unit. I knew about it revealing the map, but that was all. The problem is that if you have a horseman, or a guy that moves fast, it may not be able to keep up with him. In this case, I think it would be just as easy to create OLD-EXPLORERS as the unit goes along, even though it may take up a little more time and trigger work. However, you have still done a good job on making and explaining this 'new discovery', I wonder how you figured it out. :{ Good work!
Additional Comments:
The scenario itself was great, good desert, and VERY good looking town. I really liked the fence! I was really disappointed that you did not have an indoor scene showing the assissin killing the fat man. That was sad. :(
Your other little flaw is that, the guards seemed to be blind, and also deaf. The assissin would walk right past a guard's back, and the guard never even heard footsteps in the dirt! Also, when the assissin ran past a guard, the guard would turn around to patrol back to his orignal starting point, and and the assissin was in plain sight, and the guard never saw him!
Still a great utility, and worthy of the download. Good work![Edited on 12/19/07 @ 04:20 PM]
