The Conquerors 1.0c |
In 1951, Hemingway wrote his classic story of an old fisherman down on his luck who determines to test deeper waters, ending up in the battle of his life. This cutscene, my entry to the 2007 AoKH Cutscene Contest, is my adapted vesion of that famous book, The Old Man and the Sea.
I have considered makign this for almost a year, and this contest was an excellent chance; while definitely not perfect, I do hope that everyone will find something in it to make it a worthwile download.
So, to use an overused phrase, "Grab some popcorn and sit back and (hopefully) enjoy!"

This scenario contains a heavily edited dat file; do not try to run it without the file, it will not work.

The Old Man and the Sea is Matt's winning entry to the 2007 Cinematic Scenario Contest. The scenario is a 10 minute cutscene which is an adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's 1951 novel of the same name.
Playability: 4
I have scene many cinematic scenarios over the years but I don't think I've ever seen anything like this before. It doesn't pack any grand action or battle scenes, there isn't a whole load of triggers to make masses of units move. Its a mellow and sombre scenario which depicts an old fisherman in the string of bad luck who hasn't had a catch for over 80 days so he risks it al to sail out into the deep to catch a Great Marlin. Whilst some may find this premise boring, and not really a match for an AOK cinematic, it's well worth the watch. It's beautifully crafted, written and just a nice feel good scenario to watch. The technical achievements in the scenario are also something else. Even today, with all of the new abilities granted to us from UserPatch and other similar programs, I was still mesmerized and amazed by some of the tricks in this scenario. That being said, the one thing I would have appreciated a bit more was a little bit more background music in a couple of scenes just to help with the atmosphere. I also encountered a bug in which a trigger did not fire and therefore I had to restart the scenario again. Although I am unsure whether this was due to playing through UserPatch rather than the C patch.
Pacing: 5
The pacing of the cut scene is perfect. Everything flows perfectly as intended at the precise moment is needs to. Units move in time with the camera changes and music and sound effects and timed perfectly. There's not really much else to say about this expect that it's perfect.
Creativity: 5
The scenario uses a modified data file which allows the author to incorporate some very clever and unique tricks and effects in this cinematic. As I said previously, even today in 2022 I found some of these tricks very clever and unique, so I can only imagine how the viewers in 2007 must have felt when they first watched this. There are tricks such as using objects to represent additional things with very strategic placement. For example fireballs have been used as lanterns on boats, a knight corpses has been placed strategically on the edge of a boat to represent the marlin carcass strung the side of the boat, and an arrow projectile has been used as a harpoon. On top of this data editing has been used to allow units to been seen through the Fog of War to make it look like night time. Additionally I would add that the unique story add to the creativity. Who would have thought that a classic Hemingway novel could be adapted into an AOK scenario, and in such an enjoyable way.
Map Design: 5
Despite mostly being set in the open ocean the map design of the scenario is remarkable. The mixing of the water to represent waves is stunning and the scenes set on dry land are even more beautifully crafted. The use of elevation on the beaches and palm trees being placed sparingly add a great sense of realism to the story. The most beautiful part was obviously the African beach in the concluding dream which boasts a beautiful design with plenty of wildlife as well. Creative tricks to also add additional realism include using ice as waves and smoke to create clouds in the sky.
Story/Instructions: 5
As I said before, nobody before or since has ever made a scenario with a story like this. An adaptation of a classic 1951 novel which is more poetic than action packed, the story is not something commonly seen in AOK and is a lovely change. Matt as adapted the story very well and the narration and dialogue is beautifully written and easy to read and follow. It's a mellow story, much more thought provoking than the usual action packed epic that is commonly found in cinematic scenarios. Instructions on how to install the cut scene and its relevant data and music files are also provided.
Additional Comments:
Overall this is a fascinating cut scene scenario. Completely original with many creative aspects and something never before seen, or seen since. A highly recommended download.
Thanks
