The real story of Robin Hood, and not the movie version. King Richard the Lionhearted has come back to England, only to find that his evil cousin John has started a war with the french because he insulted their king. John convinces Richard to go into the battle, and secretly sends the France money and weapons for the war. John convinces himself that Richard will die in the battle, and tells the people only days after he leaves that their beloved king is dead. Now John is King, and Richard is still alive. You are King Richard... you must travel to Nottingham to kill that dirty cousin of yours. |

The War of Britain is a single scenario, a RPS with B&D elements. The story is fiction, you play King Richard the Lionhearted, who finds his kingdom at war with the French after his return from the third crusade. John, here his cousin, spreads the news that the King died in battle and takes the throne. Follow King Richard "on his way to Nottingham", meet Robin Hood and Friar Tuck supporting Richard against the Sheriff of Nottingham and John Lackland.
PLAYABILITY: I like the scenario and spent hours to figure out how it is meant to play. It is fun to play the different parts, even though I am still not sure if I know how it will work in the end. The scenario is dated 7/24/00 and the last changes made to the file 7/23/02 before posting and I am afraid not for the good. At the scenarios beginning King Richard is on the wrong side of Nottingham, exactly where he should arrive after his journey, thus fulfilling the second objective at the start, which leads to instant victory when you injure John, missing the journey with Robin Hood and Friar Tuck. The player should move Richard through Nottingham (open the gate) to the attack, the mountain passage will be revealed and later ignore John to continue the game. Do not build up in this stage of the game. Nottingham is your ally throughout the game, which makes you miss the announced boat attacks and the Nottingham units will be slaughtered by almost all other players on the map without resistance. The diplomacy stance was probably altered to make the scene with the gates work in the south. After your boat trip the triggers work fine unless you could not resist to advance through the ages. When the Barbarian Village changes ownership from player 1, Nottingham does the same, due to Richards crossing of the town, which was not intended. Probably the B&D starts after your arrival, but is not playable before an edit, which will certainly improve this rating. 3
BALANCE: The scenario was played on hard and it is self evident that the balance was on the easy side with many attackers missing because of the diplomacy stance. The balance is above average, not a four yet. 3+
CREATIVITY: Well above average creativity, from map design, story and trigger work. 4
MAP DESIGN: A beautiful map, good design, towns and landscape alike, elevations, terrain mix, broken roads and a nice use of cliffs. I didn't like the mix of all sorts of trees which looked odd, especially for England. 4
STORY/INSTRUCTIONS: Informative BMP, well told story, also developing in game, but the objectives and hints are confusing because of the problems referred to above. On a side note, in January 1192 Richard was still fighting Saladin, he returned to England in 1194. 4-
OVERALL: The second Robin Hood scenario in the best of AoK after an edit.
SUGGESTIONS: Place King Richard according to your BMP. Set Nottingham as enemy from the beginning, change diplomacy to ally before arriving at the two gates and change Nottingham to enemy again the moment the gates close for the rest of the game. As an alternative you could choose another player colour for the gates. |
