THE STORY
In this campaign you will step into a dead man's shoes.
You will be part of a mad hermit's tale. A tale of hatred and vendetta, of schemes and noble motives... and of guilt.
Not only will your battle skills be challenged. You will be challenged to follow Ulio on his way into his downfall, and to only leave him behind at the very end. You'll be the actor, you'll be the spectator. And you'll be the judge.
No radiant victory waits at the end... only clarity about Ulio's fate.
THE GAME
Important: Sound files are a must for this campaign, unless you want to miss a lot of the experience. They are divided into zips of roughly 1,3 MB each, so that each of them fits on one floppy disk. You can get the music files here:
Sound File 1
Sound File 2
Sound File 3
Sound File 4
Sound File 5
Ulio 3.0 also has new sound files for the 3rd person narrator. Those files are optional:
UlioNarrator1.zip
UlioNarrator2.zip
The other sound files (1-5) have not changed. If you already downloaded them earlier, you don't need to download them again. If you wonder whether to download the voice files or not, the Ulio 3.0 zip contains one voice sample, which plays after the first battle in the Foundling.
The campaign also plays the Attack on Murron soundfile that comes along with Mark Stoker's classic "Tamerlane, Prince of Destruction" campaign. If you haven't got that campaign yet, I can heartily recommend it. Thanks to Mark for allowing me to use that file!
The campaign contains two cutscene scenarios and four playable scenarios. Style: "Storyteller campaign". A mix of Cutscene/Fixed Force/Role Playing. B&D elements are minimal, you won't build a single building - only train units at existing ones.
The playable scenarios are difficulty-level-dynamic. You should have at least some gaming experience even if you play on Standard. If you are quite familiar with the game and experienced at battle tactics and micromanagement, Moderate will offer you a good challenge. If you like to test your gaming skills to the maximum, check out the Hard level.
INSTALLING THE FILES
Unzip the campaign file and all soundfiles into your Age of Empires II folder. They should go into the right directories.
CHANGES IN ULIO 3.0
- Sound files for narrator are included as extra zips (see above).
- New soundfiles for the dream in the Lion & Cat scenario are in the Ulio 3.0 zip file.
- Some typos have been fixed.
- Foundling: The "Barracks with Child inside" gets renamed again after the battle.
- Lion & Cat: Punishment for Ulio if he walks away from the village (-10 hp).
- Triangle: Fast players who went North could still end up with the general circling in the arena. Fixed.
- Epilogue: Younger and elder traveler got mixed up at the beginning. Fixed.
MISCELLANEOUS
Here are some things which were new to me when I made them: Probably the first movie-like scrolling text on the screen; a developed version of the Pyromaniac's rain trick; thunder & lightning and other effects with light and shadow; a well; some slightly altered town centers; a touchy general; armies moving, stopping and moving again in formations; an armed villager (static); impaled people; sneaking up upon a guard; a stampede; sea gates and sea towers on solid ground; alert watchtowers with fast-footed watchmen; a slippery hill; a nightmare sequence with burning ghosts and lost souls; entering an enemy castle, and a couple more.
This campaign has been tested by many people, so most bugs should have been found and fixed. However, if you do encounter any more bugs, please email me at van-thiel@web.de, so that I can look into them.
Thanks again to everyone who playtested the campaign for me! The names of the playtesters are listed in the Aftermath message of the Epilogue scenario. |

Ulio is one of the best campagins I have ever played. It was so much fun.
Playability: 5
The Campaign is very fun and interesting. I didn't find any bugs and the campaign ran smoothly.
Balance: 5
The Balance between the players was good. I found it very hard but I still managed to complete it.
Creativity: 5
This campaign was very creative. The whole story and the way it was presented was exellent. I could find many creative things in the campaign like using shore fish as rain, sneeking up of a guard, a horse stampeade, a joust, a nightmare and a slippery hill.
Map Design: 5
The Map Design were outstanding! It was detailed but not too detailed. Using the Shore fish as rain was good too.
Story/Instructions: 5
The story was Billiant. (I would love to see a movie of this) and the Instructions were clear. 5 out of 5!
Additional Comments:
This whole campaign was very very very very very very good. I wish there were more like it.

I know I'm a little late, but I just found this and it sounds interesting and I really want to play it. The files are downloaded onto the computer but I don't know how to actually play them on the game. Can someone help me? |

Sometimes there are Readme files included in the zip file that will tell you where things go. Different files go into different game folders. Here is a general rule for different types of files:
-----------------------------
Q.133 Where do I unzip / put files that I’ve downloaded?
bmp => C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II
rms => C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\Random
per/ai => C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\AI
cpx/.cpn => C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\CAMPAIGN
scx/.scn => C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\Scenario
wav/mp3 => C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\SOUND\Scenario
--------------------

Truelly amazing campaign maybe even the best. The story it self is inspiring. Quick qestion where do i put the sound and narrator files? I usually put them in the sound folder itself however i don't hear the narrator talk. Like in Chapter 3 the opening text about the yeri riding down from the step i don't get narration. So do i put it in the Scenario folder or not? |

wav/mp3 => C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\SOUND\Scenario
This means inside of the SOUND folder there is a Scenario folder - that is where you put all of the sound files. If you look in the game folders you will see the same file types.
Do not attempt to play the sound files outside of the game, some programs tend to corrupt the files, which will cause a problem in the game. |

wow...amazing campaign. can't believe it took me so much time to download it.
I like the map design, it's different than what you see at other designers. it's goal is to serve the story, not just to blow you away. And yet it looks fantastic and the atmosphere is great.
i found many campaigns to be well designed but story-telling lacking. this one has them both. |

Playability: 5
I loved this campaign. It is very challenging, fun and has a well laid out story. I loved every level from the prologue to the epilogue; finding the baby and getting it to safety, escaping from the castle, defeating your enemies in big battles. It’s brilliant!
Balance: 5
Ulio was very challenging. I got through the first to levels all right but when I got to the Triangle of Hate I found it very challenging.
Creativity: 5
This campaign was very creative. It just comes out from nowhere. Not based on anything historical (I don't think) and just pure awesomeness. I was never expecting anything like that for an ending either. Ingo has done it again. The Icy hill was amazing too.
Map Design: 5
Awesome! Waterfall, Ice parts, Sea Wall/Sea Gates on land, Ice which is slippery and kills you. Brilliant!
Story/Instructions: 5
The story was very, very good. Just like in the creativity section. I loved the whole plot and the instructions were very clear. I knew what to do at all points. It would cool to see a movie of this
Additional Comments:
I wish you were still making scenarios. This was extreme!
You are the best Scenario Designer in my opinion.
Edited for typos

I have a new favorite campaign. Great job, my friend! The storyline was ingenious!
The only bugs I found were the names didn't change in a few places (when he gets out of the well, etc.). Other than that, this is perfect. Let us know if you plan to make a sequel :D |

[spoilers]
I will say this about Ulio. It is a masterpiece, not simply of gameplay, creative design, and script play.
With that said.
I absolutely hated it. Despite the engaging story, the beautiful scenery, and the cunning battles. Deep down I can never really enjoy this campaign, because I detest tragedies.
At the very least, I would've hoped that Ulio would have forsaken his heritage. That he could have proven love does truly conquer all, race, gender, nationality, and even blood. But I suppose he was simply too weak, and feeble minded to do so.
I hope the other campaigns from this user are more uplifting. |
