Ulio v3.0

Author File Description
Ingo van Thiel
File Details
Version: The Conquerors 1.0c
Number of scenarios: 6

In this campaign you will step into a dead man's shoes.

You will be part of a mad hermit's tale. A tale of hatred and vendetta, of schemes and noble motives... and of guilt.

Not only will your battle skills be challenged. You will be challenged to follow Ulio on his way into his downfall, and to only leave him behind at the very end. You'll be the actor, you'll be the spectator. And you'll be the judge.

No radiant victory waits at the end... only clarity about Ulio's fate.

Important: Sound files are a must for this campaign, unless you want to miss a lot of the experience. They are divided into zips of roughly 1,3 MB each, so that each of them fits on one floppy disk. You can get the music files here:

Sound File 1
Sound File 2
Sound File 3
Sound File 4
Sound File 5

Ulio 3.0 also has new sound files for the 3rd person narrator. Those files are optional:

The other sound files (1-5) have not changed. If you already downloaded them earlier, you don't need to download them again. If you wonder whether to download the voice files or not, the Ulio 3.0 zip contains one voice sample, which plays after the first battle in the Foundling.

The campaign also plays the Attack on Murron soundfile that comes along with Mark Stoker's classic "Tamerlane, Prince of Destruction" campaign. If you haven't got that campaign yet, I can heartily recommend it. Thanks to Mark for allowing me to use that file!

The campaign contains two cutscene scenarios and four playable scenarios. Style: "Storyteller campaign". A mix of Cutscene/Fixed Force/Role Playing. B&D elements are minimal, you won't build a single building - only train units at existing ones.

The playable scenarios are difficulty-level-dynamic. You should have at least some gaming experience even if you play on Standard. If you are quite familiar with the game and experienced at battle tactics and micromanagement, Moderate will offer you a good challenge. If you like to test your gaming skills to the maximum, check out the Hard level.

Unzip the campaign file and all soundfiles into your Age of Empires II folder. They should go into the right directories.

- Sound files for narrator are included as extra zips (see above).
- New soundfiles for the dream in the Lion & Cat scenario are in the Ulio 3.0 zip file.
- Some typos have been fixed.
- Foundling: The "Barracks with Child inside" gets renamed again after the battle.
- Lion & Cat: Punishment for Ulio if he walks away from the village (-10 hp).
- Triangle: Fast players who went North could still end up with the general circling in the arena. Fixed.
- Epilogue: Younger and elder traveler got mixed up at the beginning. Fixed.

Here are some things which were new to me when I made them: Probably the first movie-like scrolling text on the screen; a developed version of the Pyromaniac's rain trick; thunder & lightning and other effects with light and shadow; a well; some slightly altered town centers; a touchy general; armies moving, stopping and moving again in formations; an armed villager (static); impaled people; sneaking up upon a guard; a stampede; sea gates and sea towers on solid ground; alert watchtowers with fast-footed watchmen; a slippery hill; a nightmare sequence with burning ghosts and lost souls; entering an enemy castle, and a couple more.

This campaign has been tested by many people, so most bugs should have been found and fixed. However, if you do encounter any more bugs, please email me at, so that I can look into them.

Thanks again to everyone who playtested the campaign for me! The names of the playtesters are listed in the Aftermath message of the Epilogue scenario.

brenocc It's an awesome campaign, and a beautiful story. It has touched my very bottom. My congratulations to you, Ingo. I would like, with your permission, to write a book based on it, your creation. For this, I come here, in this comment (the only way that I've thought to talk with you) to ask you to allow me to write it, and, with a bit of luck, have it published some years ahead. My intent is to write it's base in the three months of dezember, january and february. I do not wish to steal your creativity, and we can mail each other if it be of your desire, maybe focusing in addaptations that I judge necessaries. Well, it's this. Congratulations once more; you have a brilliant tallent to show, trought stories, complexities of men.
dikaios I would realy like to read a book about Ingos' Ulio!

EDIT: typos

D4Ra4Aracks111 Hey Ingo why don't you stop by on forums. many people expecting you there?.
Mazeppa Looks like I have a weird problem playing chapter 2 (The Lion and the Cat chapter). :( As soon as King Ulug said "lock the gates", I got the "You have been defeated" message every time, so I'm unable to play that chapter specifically.

I have completed the campaign though, but just not chapter 2. :( Anyone have any suggestions on what do I do in my case? I'm currently using the userpatch version to play this campaign, if you ask.

brenocc: Thank you for your compliment and, if you are still reading this, I am sorry for responding two years late. Using computer game stories for books or movies usually does not work well. Many parts of the Ulio story are just gameplay features to keep players challenged and entertained: Hiding in wells, many small and large battles, luring enemies down a slippery hill etc. This may be fun to play in an Age of Kings scenario, but all those little events would not look so hot in written format, instead they would just distract from the main story. Ulio is a game adaptation of an old literary topic, the Oedipus tragedy, which has inspired many pieces of literature. So, instead of readapting a game adaptation, I suggest you rather look at the original dark story of Oedipus (you'll find it on the web), get inspired and create your own story of it, with your own characters, names, and events. Good luck!

Mazeppa: Sorry to hear about your crash problem. I have never experienced it when I tested the Ulio scenario, so I cannot fix it. It may really have to do with your userpatch. I don't know why the crash occurs for you but I have a theory. At the time the gate closes, Ulio changes ownership to the player. Maybe your version somehow messes with that ownership trigger so that players lose all units, and the game. But again, that's just a theory. I cannot double-check it because this bug never happened to me with the old version of AoK. If you have a chance to play this without the userpatch, give it a shot.

Mazeppa Wow!! Thanks for the fast reply, haha!! Turns out I was right to wait a little while before someone could address my problem, but didn't expect it to be you, haha!! :P

It's a shame really, and I tried to play it on steam as well, but turned out it didn't allow me to play even chapter one due to the latest patch for Aoe2 HD. :( But I've seen a video surfaced on youtube that played that chapter, so that'll suffice anyway. :P

Anyway, that aside, just wanted to say one thing: This campaign was what got me wanting to buy AoK in the first place. :D The countless reviews on it, the comments saying how wonderful its storyline is, heck even other people on other heaven sites mentioned it, and so for 4 years, I was full of curiosity and intrigue. I was waiting for AoK to be in GOG for quite a while, but eventually gave up on it, figuring that it'll probably never be there anyway, so I got it on steam a few months ago, and I totally didn't regret it. :P

The story was wonderfully crafted and its plot was weaved in so carefully. Heck, I can't believe I teared up in the end. :( I found myself glancing with awe at the terrain design at every chapter, and even the mini-map had so much detail. Even though I never got to play chapter 2, I still play this campaign and finishing it for at least 5 or 6 times now, in different difficulty settings, and I never got tired of it. :) You did a wonderful job with this, and I truly hope I could do something just like this, one day; even though it'll take a lot of time and dedication in the end. :) What a campaign, indeed. :)

Just wondering though.. I very much, know about the Oedipus myth, and I've found quite a few similarities between Oedipus and Ulio (I won't spoil it. ;) ), but in the ending, I felt there was also something else in Greek mythology which you may have also got inspired in a little bit, and I think it's The Orestes myth. :) I mean, the voices; the cackling voices, and arms reaching out to grab Ulio - it made me think of the Erinyes that plagued Orestes life and drove him to madness after he committed matricide, in the Orestes myth, and was forced to wander the earth alone.

The ending in this campaign though, was totally different compared to the Orestes story, but I still get the feeling the Orestes myth might've been another inspiration, albeit a small contribution. Just a feeling, though. :)

Thank you Mazeppa for the great comment! It means something to me that you started playing AoK for Ulio, and that the story moved you. It's a pity you had these strange problems playing the game with the HD update...

The cackling voices and arms reaching out were inspired by a story I saw on a TV show, back in the 90's: They interviewed a man who survived a suicide attempt and had a bad near-death experience. His wife found and saved him.

I'm not familiar with the Orestes myth but will look it up, you got me interested now!
