Ulio v3.0

Author File Description
Ingo van Thiel
File Details
Version: The Conquerors 1.0c
Number of scenarios: 6

In this campaign you will step into a dead man's shoes.

You will be part of a mad hermit's tale. A tale of hatred and vendetta, of schemes and noble motives... and of guilt.

Not only will your battle skills be challenged. You will be challenged to follow Ulio on his way into his downfall, and to only leave him behind at the very end. You'll be the actor, you'll be the spectator. And you'll be the judge.

No radiant victory waits at the end... only clarity about Ulio's fate.

Important: Sound files are a must for this campaign, unless you want to miss a lot of the experience. They are divided into zips of roughly 1,3 MB each, so that each of them fits on one floppy disk. You can get the music files here:

Sound File 1
Sound File 2
Sound File 3
Sound File 4
Sound File 5

Ulio 3.0 also has new sound files for the 3rd person narrator. Those files are optional:

The other sound files (1-5) have not changed. If you already downloaded them earlier, you don't need to download them again. If you wonder whether to download the voice files or not, the Ulio 3.0 zip contains one voice sample, which plays after the first battle in the Foundling.

The campaign also plays the Attack on Murron soundfile that comes along with Mark Stoker's classic "Tamerlane, Prince of Destruction" campaign. If you haven't got that campaign yet, I can heartily recommend it. Thanks to Mark for allowing me to use that file!

The campaign contains two cutscene scenarios and four playable scenarios. Style: "Storyteller campaign". A mix of Cutscene/Fixed Force/Role Playing. B&D elements are minimal, you won't build a single building - only train units at existing ones.

The playable scenarios are difficulty-level-dynamic. You should have at least some gaming experience even if you play on Standard. If you are quite familiar with the game and experienced at battle tactics and micromanagement, Moderate will offer you a good challenge. If you like to test your gaming skills to the maximum, check out the Hard level.

Unzip the campaign file and all soundfiles into your Age of Empires II folder. They should go into the right directories.

- Sound files for narrator are included as extra zips (see above).
- New soundfiles for the dream in the Lion & Cat scenario are in the Ulio 3.0 zip file.
- Some typos have been fixed.
- Foundling: The "Barracks with Child inside" gets renamed again after the battle.
- Lion & Cat: Punishment for Ulio if he walks away from the village (-10 hp).
- Triangle: Fast players who went North could still end up with the general circling in the arena. Fixed.
- Epilogue: Younger and elder traveler got mixed up at the beginning. Fixed.

Here are some things which were new to me when I made them: Probably the first movie-like scrolling text on the screen; a developed version of the Pyromaniac's rain trick; thunder & lightning and other effects with light and shadow; a well; some slightly altered town centers; a touchy general; armies moving, stopping and moving again in formations; an armed villager (static); impaled people; sneaking up upon a guard; a stampede; sea gates and sea towers on solid ground; alert watchtowers with fast-footed watchmen; a slippery hill; a nightmare sequence with burning ghosts and lost souls; entering an enemy castle, and a couple more.

This campaign has been tested by many people, so most bugs should have been found and fixed. However, if you do encounter any more bugs, please email me at, so that I can look into them.

Thanks again to everyone who playtested the campaign for me! The names of the playtesters are listed in the Aftermath message of the Epilogue scenario.

russoft Ok, the problem I am having on the Birthmark is at any point that the "slide down the hill" trigger(s) is/are used when a unit walks onto the ice. I cleverly sneaked past the part with the wolf, but then I can't kill the enemy without the hill! It crashes as soon as the enemy steps onto the ice! I am using version 1.0c! Is it designed for an older version?

I'd like to help you, but I've never heard of such a problem, and I have no idea what might be causing it on your computer. The slippery hill trick uses an editor bug to make the units slide - "unload" effect on land units - but if that was the cause, your game would have crashed sooner during the wolf scene.

I think the game was designed with the original Conquerors game, or maybe 1.0b; anyhow, if the 1.0c patch was the cause, there would have been many more players with the same problem.

But who knows: You could still try to play the scenario on a different computer, or with an pre-1.0c patch version of AoK.
NeoVanquisher Hello again.

I have mentioned that some places in Ulio has an anti-cheat. Well, for example in a scenario where you'll pick some soldiers, I saw somebody tried the 1000 gold trick, and it DID NOT work!

How do you do that? I wouldreallly like to add that to my scenario/campaign.

By the way Ingo Van Thiel, why are you always making like this, that the player only receives a few men and the enemy is a HUGE force.
It is not bad and it makes like victory is nearly impossible... but it is damn cool!

The_Slayer90 @ neovanquisher. The anti-cheat trigger for what you are talking about is:

Trigger0 ON
condition0 = accumulate attribute-(# of resources you don't want the player to have) you also have to choose which type of resource.

effect0 = declare victory-(enemy player's #)

NeoVanquisher Hi again!

Say me one thing, how is it possible to upload the home-made campaigns to

Because I am creating a campaign right now, and when it is finished, I'll upload it (unless I feel that my campaign is a big bull-shit.)

The_Slayer90 @ neovanquisher,
if you go to the main campaign page, it should have a button in the top right corner call submit. Push that and fill out the nessecary procedures.

Playability: 5
No Problemo! Perfecto! What else to say? It just goes as... a flow.

Balance: 5
Very challenging. I loved the " to death " fight inside the Aguri's (?) castle. I won with one man left, thankfully the hero!

Creativity: 5
So many tricks. An AoK library! Some of them have been inspired by other great designers, but credits have been nicely given, and even their creation have been enhanced to a master level. Amazing Ice-skating party you gave us! There is the same " bug " in AoM when you freeze an animation. I'll try yours, see if it works, since it's a lot easier.

Map Design: 5
It's not only beautiful, it gets very often so poetical, so dreamy. To bad AoK can't zoom in, as far as I know.

Story/Instructions: 5
A classic. If your looking how to do the instructions combined with objectives part, take a look, as well as a good fun at this.
Great idea to use this so well known Oedipus story. One thing though: I wish it could have been used a little more all along the game instead of kind of dropping everything at the very end, which makes... quite a lot of reading.

Additional Comments:
I played already most of your scenarii, and this is my favorite so far. So smart, so funny, so beautiful, so... everything.
To be used with the sounds!!!!!

cataphract_fan Wow this campaign is fantastic.

I have one problem.

In the Birthmark, chapter 4, I lead the villagers to the bridge, and they say they can't repair the bridge. The objective screen still says bring villagers to the bridge. I tried doing that, and they don't repair it. I have tried exploring elsewhere but it doens't seem to work. Does anyone have a solution for that?
NeoVanquisher Hey Slayer_90 (or anybody else), since my scenario/campaign is in progess, I had downloaded an immobilizing AI File, but it's just that, that opening the AI File cannot be done. (Maybe some of you guys had seem this error before):

AO script error
File (The AI script's name).per
ERR 5001: File open failed

Can somebody help me?
The_Slayer90 Did you make sure you moved both the .ai and .per files to your AI folder?
