Ulio v3.0

Author File Description
Ingo van Thiel
File Details
Version: The Conquerors
Number of scenarios: 6
THE STORY

In this campaign you will step into a dead man's shoes.

You will be part of a mad hermit's tale. A tale of hatred and vendetta, of schemes and noble motives... and of guilt.

Not only will your battle skills be challenged. You will be challenged to follow Ulio on his way into his downfall, and to only leave him behind at the very end. You'll be the actor, you'll be the spectator. And you'll be the judge.

No radiant victory waits at the end... only clarity about Ulio's fate.

THE GAME

Important: Sound files are a must for this campaign, unless you want to miss a lot of the experience. They are divided into zips of roughly 1,3 MB each, so that each of them fits on one floppy disk. You can get the music files here:

Sound File 1
Sound File 2
Sound File 3
Sound File 4
Sound File 5

Ulio 3.0 also has new sound files for the 3rd person narrator. Those files are optional:

UlioNarrator1.zip
UlioNarrator2.zip

The other sound files (1-5) have not changed. If you already downloaded them earlier, you don't need to download them again. If you wonder whether to download the voice files or not, the Ulio 3.0 zip contains one voice sample, which plays after the first battle in the Foundling.

The campaign also plays the Attack on Murron soundfile that comes along with Mark Stoker's classic "Tamerlane, Prince of Destruction" campaign. If you haven't got that campaign yet, I can heartily recommend it. Thanks to Mark for allowing me to use that file!

The campaign contains two cutscene scenarios and four playable scenarios. Style: "Storyteller campaign". A mix of Cutscene/Fixed Force/Role Playing. B&D elements are minimal, you won't build a single building - only train units at existing ones.

The playable scenarios are difficulty-level-dynamic. You should have at least some gaming experience even if you play on Standard. If you are quite familiar with the game and experienced at battle tactics and micromanagement, Moderate will offer you a good challenge. If you like to test your gaming skills to the maximum, check out the Hard level.

INSTALLING THE FILES

Unzip the campaign file and all soundfiles into your Age of Empires II folder. They should go into the right directories.

CHANGES IN ULIO 3.0

- Sound files for narrator are included as extra zips (see above).
- New soundfiles for the dream in the Lion & Cat scenario are in the Ulio 3.0 zip file.
- Some typos have been fixed.
- Foundling: The "Barracks with Child inside" gets renamed again after the battle.
- Lion & Cat: Punishment for Ulio if he walks away from the village (-10 hp).
- Triangle: Fast players who went North could still end up with the general circling in the arena. Fixed.
- Epilogue: Younger and elder traveler got mixed up at the beginning. Fixed.

MISCELLANEOUS

Here are some things which were new to me when I made them: Probably the first movie-like scrolling text on the screen; a developed version of the Pyromaniac's rain trick; thunder & lightning and other effects with light and shadow; a well; some slightly altered town centers; a touchy general; armies moving, stopping and moving again in formations; an armed villager (static); impaled people; sneaking up upon a guard; a stampede; sea gates and sea towers on solid ground; alert watchtowers with fast-footed watchmen; a slippery hill; a nightmare sequence with burning ghosts and lost souls; entering an enemy castle, and a couple more.

This campaign has been tested by many people, so most bugs should have been found and fixed. However, if you do encounter any more bugs, please email me at van-thiel@web.de, so that I can look into them.

Thanks again to everyone who playtested the campaign for me! The names of the playtesters are listed in the Aftermath message of the Epilogue scenario.

No Problemo! Perfecto! What else to say? It just goes as... a flow.

Balance: 5
Very challenging. I loved the " to death " fight inside the Aguri's (?) castle. I won with one man left, thankfully the hero!

Creativity: 5
So many tricks. An AoK library! Some of them have been inspired by other great designers, but credits have been nicely given, and even their creation have been enhanced to a master level. Amazing Ice-skating party you gave us! There is the same " bug " in AoM when you freeze an animation. I'll try yours, see if it works, since it's a lot easier.

Map Design: 5
It's not only beautiful, it gets very often so poetical, so dreamy. To bad AoK can't zoom in, as far as I know.

Story/Instructions: 5
A classic. If your looking how to do the instructions combined with objectives part, take a look, as well as a good fun at this.
Great idea to use this so well known Oedipus story. One thing though: I wish it could have been used a little more all along the game instead of kind of dropping everything at the very end, which makes... quite a lot of reading.

Additional Comments:
I played already most of your scenarii, and this is my favorite so far. So smart, so funny, so beautiful, so... everything.
To be used with the sounds!!!!!
Merci!

After playing the Quest, I had to have more of Ingo's works. And I found more. Ulio is absolutely great, even better than it's predecessors.

Playability: 5
Perfect. Nothing else to say here.

Balance: 5
In my opinion, the campaign was challenging but not too tough. Just perfect.

Creativity: 5
Well, Ingo must always have a creativity 5, I've played all the camp/scen by Ingo and creativity has never been below 5. Nice work with the ice in the last chapter.

Map Design: 5
I wish I could do such maps myself. It made you forget that you're playing a game made in the year 2000. Absolute 5

Story/Instructions: 5
The strongest part of the scenario, i think. No happy ending (thank the gods), full of twists and turns and so on.

This is probably the best RPG scen. what I've played for AOEII:TC. Nothing else to be said here: the best.

This campaign is fun, I could not remember having so much fun playing Aok.

Balance: 5
The balance is excellant, the enemy wasn't too weak or strong. All the enemys were defeatable.

Creativity: 5+
Creative only a 5?! I would give creative a 10 if I can.

Map Design: 5
The maps look excellant, even to the last bit of the battle field.

Story/Instructions: 5+
What can I say? The story was excellant you hear the Old man (not telling who he really is) story of Ulio and how he suffered through madness, back stabbing. I almost cried in the last scenario. It really makes you feel like your Ulio.

Normally I'm a very great fan of RPG games, but how you make campaign's and scenario's is simple amazing! no matter what you like, you'll surely like this! I really did, especially the part when you had to kill your own father... (great :D)

Balance: 5
Very good! I tried everything, sometimes I had to start over and over, especially on hard :D however, it was great! Also, I would advice anyone to try 'standard' first, and build up then :D
Anyone who is very skilled with Age of Kings/Conquerors, should try hard, it's still a very great challenge

Creativity: 5
Another story just came out of nowhere... No persons based on existing places, names, or other things... You could expect such an end, but the way that it goes, is simple amazing and typical for Ingo...

Map Design: 5
What can I say? Amazing! Ingo made sure himself that his scenario's looks great! Some examples : waterfalls, the ice parts, the pallisade trick withouth the flagged corners, etc...

Story/Instructions: 5
A bit the same like Creativity, started from zero to hero :D The story is amazing, introductions maybe a bit long but cool :D
Great job! Keep going ( too bad i saw that you are no longer under the scenario designers...)

Additional Comments:

Great job!

P.S. forgive me my spelling-mistakes... I'm dutch

Greetings,
Guthan

Ulio is one of the best campagins I have ever played. It was so much fun.

Playability: 5
The Campaign is very fun and interesting. I didn't find any bugs and the campaign ran smoothly.

Balance: 5
The Balance between the players was good. I found it very hard but I still managed to complete it.

Creativity: 5
This campaign was very creative. The whole story and the way it was presented was exellent. I could find many creative things in the campaign like using shore fish as rain, sneeking up of a guard, a horse stampeade, a joust, a nightmare and a slippery hill.

Map Design: 5
The Map Design were outstanding! It was detailed but not too detailed. Using the Shore fish as rain was good too.

Story/Instructions: 5
The story was Billiant. (I would love to see a movie of this) and the Instructions were clear. 5 out of 5!

Additional Comments:
This whole campaign was very very very very very very good. I wish there were more like it.

I loved this campaign. It is very challenging, fun and has a well laid out story. I loved every level from the prologue to the epilogue; finding the baby and getting it to safety, escaping from the castle, defeating your enemies in big battles. It’s brilliant!

Balance: 5
Ulio was very challenging. I got through the first to levels all right but when I got to the Triangle of Hate I found it very challenging.

Creativity: 5
This campaign was very creative. It just comes out from nowhere. Not based on anything historical (I don't think) and just pure awesomeness. I was never expecting anything like that for an ending either. Ingo has done it again. The Icy hill was amazing too.

Map Design: 5
Awesome! Waterfall, Ice parts, Sea Wall/Sea Gates on land, Ice which is slippery and kills you. Brilliant!

Story/Instructions: 5
The story was very, very good. Just like in the creativity section. I loved the whole plot and the instructions were very clear. I knew what to do at all points. It would cool to see a movie of this

Additional Comments:
I wish you were still making scenarios. This was extreme!

You are the best Scenario Designer in my opinion.

Edited for typos

I played Age of Empire 2 when it came out, back then i was only 9 years old and I continued to play it to conquers after that i thought i'd seen it all the game had to offer. Then i heard about this scenario Ulio and i knew that i couldn't pass this up. I downloaded this file which was my first file to be downloaded. I played Ulio that Friday all the way to Saturday and i couldn't be more impressed.

Playability: 5
The game plays incredible. Not just as a Age of Empires 2 scenario but as Ulio. It's a totally different kind of game then just the typical game. A must play for all those looking for something new.

Balance: 5
This game will require you too actually think about how you play because treating it as just another scenerio will have you hitting the restart and load button alot. Its challenging in all aspects but no impossible.

Creativity: 5
I cant really say more but possibly the most creative scenerio ever made. Ensemble studios needs to hire Ingo immediatly for a more creative grasp on the next Age of Empires.

Map Design: 5
Goes along with creativity. Every tree and and small hill helps go along with the story there is no worthless space.

Story/Instructions: 5
Honestly I was left breathless at the end. If you dont like hard gameplay thats fine but you must play it just for the story. It has the best story in all of Age of Kings Heaven and I stand by that.

Great balance between different types of play styles: rpg, defending a location, build and destroy, variety of tactics in overcoming obstacles .. very clever.

Balance: 5

Perfectly balanced and challenging but not to the point of being aggravating.

Creativity: 5

Absolutely one of the most creative "quest" type campaigns I've ever played. Loved the sliding on ice tactic, draining the river, hiding in the well, explosive elements, use of the unexpected to defeat an opponent.

Map Design: 5

Wow ... the map design was amazing and intriguing... snowy landscapes and details were my favorites. I learned a lot about the possibilities and uses of the map editor tool in AOK/Conquerors. Many map features were also vital to game play which was an added bonus.

Story/Instructions: 5

A superb storyline with lots of twists and turns. Extremely well written .. perfectly balanced with all the game play.

Additional Comments:

Ingo you are a genius when it comes to creating campaigns. Thank you!!

It is amazing. The triggers, the details on the scenery, everything was perfectly balanced, as well the balance between the shortcuts, the story, the gaming and the battling. The cutscenes were awesome and there was enough of both a lot.

Balance: 5
It was really easy to play actually, it exploits to the maximum the micromanagement and you actually need tactics to be succesful in every stage, specially in the Triangle of Hate stage, which is very hard if you don't concentrate, I actually found it excelent.

Creativity: 5
IT'S SAD I CAN'T GIVE MORE THAN A 5. Seriously, I was astounded by the creativity here, it was simply amazing from the very beggining, even The Grave in The Rain was truly amazing, I was really surprised by this, and when I realized it was Age of Empires, I almost killed myself. Truly amazing history, truly amazing... everything.

Map Design: 5
Really, really marvelous. The details in everything, the little details and everything, the elevations were really good placed, and it's the first time I think that a snowy scenario rocks.

Story/Instructions: 5
The story was really good. I seriously can't believe that there was character developement in an AOE enviroment. It was really good seriously. The instructions were really clear, no one can complain about it. It clearly said every step you could/had to make.

Additional Comments
This is by far the best computer scenario I have played. The sounds and music was absolutely wonderful, and I loved when I heard Fanfare For The Common Man haha! I loved The Lion and The Cat, that was my very favourite. Seriously dude. Everything in it was really really amazing. To think that that soldiers that always fought in my boring standard games or boring computer campaigns could have developement, fun, action, and even feeling really made me think that this Ingo Van Thiel guy was a God. Dude you seriously made a kick-ass work here. To be honest and to not exagerate this will be very hard to forget. The ending was sad, well something. It left me like with a no-words surprise. YOU ROCK.
