Major credit goes to Ykkrosh for his work on GeniEd1. Also credit goes to:
Ancient Warrior/Taichi San - help with some data structures/beta testing
DiGiT - his wiki helped a lot in some places
ModRocker - beta tester
ARG_Explorer - bug testing
qaz123tfg - writing the help files/beta tester
Please keep in mind that this is my first *real* program that I've written. It's not the fastest program, but it should run fast enough. If it seems to not be responding, give it a few minutes. Some things (saving mostly) make it seem unresponsive. This is normal and is no cause for alarm. If you get any unknown errors or have any questions, please post them in the Advanced Genie Editor thread (link provided above). I may not answer right away, but you should get an answer in a few days. It may take time for me to find the answer to your question.
The current version uses the loading cursor now, as well as saying whats going on in the status area (bottom left part of the window). |

Advanced Genie Editor is a program designed to edit data files of AoE I and AoE II, as well as SWGB if you have it (Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds)
Functionality:
The Advanced Genie Editor is straight forward, with a very nice user frontend. You get the choice of selecting which game data to edit (after it loads all the data beforehand). You can then select to add/edit a Unit, Tech, or unique tech's (perfusion, yeomen, elite units, etc).
You can also add on to the previously created tech/unit data. You can allow only certain things to fly, remove auto garrison/attack, and even give things the ability to fish or even build stuff.
Example: I should be able to make an archer construct a building (no building graphics, but it should still work)
Usability:
Like I said earlier, the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of the program is very simple. There are no unneeded dialog areas, or data boxes. Using it quite a few times, I have had no error's thrown at me in Age of Empires I or II. The author of the program has quite a knowledge of the data files in Age of Empires.
Errors in the program:
I did find a few errors, and the most noticeable one is in the GUI.
Where you are able to edit the ability/effect of something, part of the buttons get cut off...I don't know if its OS specific or not, but it is a small error.
Upon trying to add a new ability to a unit, it inserts ability to attack, regardless of what's selected.
Overall score: 5.0
Update on Review:
Since the release of 1.5.1, I have reviewed the features of AGE.
Many bug fixes have been done to this program, that greatly enhance this program. The GUI errors back in 1.0 and such have been fixed. The errors (to my knowledge) of inserting new data into a unit has also been fixed.
The recent ability to edit DRS files is rather unique. I have only one request here. That we can get a preview of the image/sound going to be edited, removed, added, etc.
GUI: The GUI (Graphical User Interface) has had a major update, as many features i considered hindered by it (buttons cut off, not enough room) have been fixed. It is a very clean cut GUI, and I have no complaints about it.
Usability: No doubt this could have amazing uses, specifically because of the new DRS editing abilities in version(s) 1.4 (i think thats what i read) and up.
This very well may be the 'next generation' editing tool for SWGB, AOE1 and AOE2.

Yea, I dont want to end up in such an standard formatted review. ;)
It's because that TechEdit became much more then that!
This program surpasses geniedt on all areas ;)
Now to the point:
This program has an realy quick easy and handy interface though.
Also, this program has the amazing possibility to add and remove data from the unitdata file.
This program includes incredibly handy buttons like cut copy paste move replace replace all, and much more like that stuff.
Useability:
As I said before, this program is fast and easy to use, and savely creates backup of all used files, so that you can recover them.
Errors/Bugs:
Exept on that the tool chrashes if I click to load all aok files, all goes well, and I dont blame this, because you didnt got that far yet to make full support for all other games.
Functionality:
This program allows streight access to almost every part of the unitdata file, and drs files that are now supported. As i am writing this review, were deeping in on how to let the program work to edit terrain structures, all though that it is possible to add or remove terrains, it will never be possible to add them to the mapeditor allthough
But i gurantee, if this feature is ready, its an GOD-Tool. ;)
Installation:
Yea the install goes a bit rough, if you dont know where to place the files if you dont know where to install them.
Creativity:
Yea its awesome how you have put so incredibly much functionality in such an small userinterface, this makes it realy handy
Additional comment:
This is only personal, but future Total conversions of this game will take less time and space, so it ables us to make more easily incredible mods.
By giving me the latest release yet, I was planning to resume my lost Age of Aristocacy project.
I am helping stbs with this program to find out new unit data structures, and other testing stuff.
STBS: Im offering you that I am going to make an installation wizard made in installshield 2008 Pro to solve this. I will ask it on msn soon btw.

The Advanced Geni Editor better known as A.G.E is a new programme which allows you to edit data files and also add completely new units without changing any others, unlike MPS. It is easy to use and has many great features. You can use it to add new characters and objects to the game and create expansions like. An example would be Renaissance by olvier. A.G.E is a great programme and is useful to anyone who wants to create new units/objects and add them to the game. A.G.E is one of the most useful things an AOK gamer would want. IT can be used by Modders and also Scenario Designers for their campaigns and scenarios. An example being The Fury of Rastulf by Courtjester1.
Additional Comments:
A.G.E is a programme you must have if you like Data Editing. A MUST Download.

Usefulness/Novelty: 5
This tool has many options and can be used to create new units and buildings. Technologies and researches are also an option in the editor. It is the most advanced editor that I have ever heard of.
Quality/Instructions: 5
The University has many instructions about using this program to make a unit or a building to construct the unit. It is a very high quality editor.
Additional Comments:
I recommend this program for advanced beginners. Beginners can use GeniEd 1 for learning and can move on to more possibilities with using this genie editor. |
