'A Turkish Soccer Match' is a FF, a soccer match between the teams of Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, both from Istanbul, which show excellent soccer. However, what started with a friendly game 17 January 1909 became a rivalry since 23 February 1934. Riots broke out at a 'friendly' game at Taksim Stadium. The referee had to interrupt the match many times because of hard fouls and finally to abandon the match. With the players fighting, the pitch turned into a war zone. It was the last 'friendly' match between the two teams. Of 358 matches Fenerbahce won 135, Galatasaray 109 and 114 were draws. In the league, Galatasaray leads now with 1 point before Fenerbahce. The next match is between the two rivals is 27 February 2008. You play for Galatasaray.
PLAYABILITY: The events take place on a soccer field but it is not a soccer game, nothing to represent a ball. I had no fun playing this scenario; it was too easy, an effortless scenario lacking any kind of game play enhancing features. The opposing team leaves scouting eventually, sometimes after they attacked the referee. You win killing the players of Fenerbahce, the referee and the spectators. 2-
BALANCE: The author is obviously a fan of Galatasaray. Player 1 starts in the Post-Imperial Age while Fenerbahce is stuck in the Dark Age and thus there is no challenge at all. Gather your 11 players and the 6 on the substitutes' bench, maybe not the King unit and reenact the events of 23 February 1934 but this time with a 'convincing' victory. 1
CREATIVITY: The idea to arm soccer players to fight a game instead of playing a ball is creative because it has a mild realistic approach to the game of soccer. The 'Soccer War' of 1969 between El Salvador and Honduras, which in reference to the Hundred Years War is also known as the 100 Hours War, came to my mind playing the scenario. However, every aspect of a scenario factors into creativity and other than the basic idea there is nothing to mention. 2
MAP DESIGN: Some effort went into the drawing of the soccer field but it looks appealing on the mini map only. The map consists of an open flat editor green grass map with shallows marking field lines and road terrain around. 2+
STORY/INSTRUCTIONS: There was no story, no objective, just a blank pre-game introduction screen and no in game messages. 1
OVERALL: 'A Turkish Soccer Match' is an unpretentious scenario.
SUGGESTIONS: Give the opponent an advantage to make it challenging, write a history about the clubs, give an objectives, make palisades around the fields, the spectators on elevations behind, wall the stadium, have player colors for spectators but probably a soccer game does not work for a historical RTS game in Single Player. ;)
IN CLOSING: The above is not a recommendation to download.
