Age of Chivalry: Hegemony
Age of Chivalry - a total conversion modification pack for Age of Empires II: the Conquerors set in Western and Central Europe 1100-1500 AD.
Requires the C patch.
Some versions of AoK:TC come with the patch pre-installed, such as some Gold and Collectors Editions. If this is the case, do not install the patch!
Although the graphic changes are been extensive, we've also gone for a total revamp of the gameplay. We've replaced all of the 18 civilisations, there are many new units, new, civilisation-specific buildings (the Princely Court, the Assembly Hall and the Guild Hall) as well as over a dozen new technologies, policy decisions, a mercenary system, new combat dynamics, and even an extensive history section. Yes, that's right: we're replacing all the civilisations in the game with new ones!
Wider support for scenario-only objects is included, and to showcase these a multi-scenario campaign is included with the mod itself. Multiplayer and random map balance has been tweaked, a rudimentary AI has been included, and with the new countries joining the mix, the European battles are even better!
Features:
* Command one of three types of civilisation: the early-game Communal civilisations, the mid-game, militia/spear-centred Urban societies or the heavy infantry/cavalry Noble principalities
* Prepare to fight! Changed game mechanics ensure a much earlier start to the combat, with archery units available in the first age and castles and battering rams in the second
* Complement your armies with mercenaries like the Genoese Crossbowman, the Privateer, or Scots Guards
* Take up the fight as Austria, Bavaria, Bohemia, Brandenburg, Brittany, Burgundy, Denmark, England, Flanders, Florence, France, Friesland, Genoa, Guelders, Helvetia, Hungary, Liege, Milan, Naples, the Papal States, Poland, Savoy, Saxony, Scotland, Venice, or Wales, each completely different
* Advance your country on one of at least two paths by making essential policy decisions, affecting the future of your people
* New buildings, technologies, and units, from the ordinances of the Princely Court to the might of each faction's hero
* Research new, civ-specific, technologies, such as English Longbowmen or Helvetia's Eidgenossenschaft
* Discover the history of each of the 26 countries - plus special articles on the period's conflicts and warriors
* Historical 8-scenario campaign takes you through some of the major events of the period (the battle of Bouvines, the Barons' War, the conquest of West Friesland, the battle of Kortrijk, the start of the Hundred Years War, the siege of Maastricht, the battle of Chioggia, the battle of Vitkov Hill and the siege of Neuss)
Comes with auto-installer.

Well, I've had this quite a while now, and being first and foremost a historian I've had something of a love-hate relationship with this mod.
The modmakers own discription at the very top is fairly accurate, although I can't help feeling Spain should have been in there. Okay, so they weren't much of a major player through the 1000-1300 period but increase in significance through the 14th and 15th centuries, so perhaps they should say it is based on Central Europe instead.
Oh, by the way, I'm not spanish, in case anyone was wondering :)
That's the geek in my speaking. Now for the gamer to have a go:
Usefulness/Novelty: 4.5
In terms of novelty factor, this is pretty much as original as... the original. By which I mean, AoK is transformed. The graphics I will cover in Quality. In terms of playing style, it's nice to have 'categories' - Miltia civs and Knightly civs. Policy decisions are a great addition (inspired by AoE III methinks ;) ). Unfortunately, although the AI is beautifully challenging, it can be exploited - it sends a more or less constant stream of 2-4 unit types - usually not their best. What makes it challenging is that their economy is very good and they begin attacking pretty fast. However, they don't create defenses or store up reserves, which is a shame.
I've had a look in the AI file, and the authors seem aware of these niggles, so hopefully we'll see updates with some improvements - that would be very nice indeed.
It's mostly the AI which drops this area down to 4.5 in my opinion. A huge amount of effort has gone into this mod, and (except for the grahpics, see last sections) it's excellent - more than adequate - more than playable.
Usefulness in terms of "can you use it" can be interpreted 2 ways - how user-friendly it is to start with (I'll cover in instructions), or, as I shall now write about, bugs and glitches.
Not much to write about. Installation is very smooth, uninstallation (which I've done like 6 times to make way for my own mods) is equally userfriendly. I have had a random crash one or two times, but all basic functions are fine - saving, loading, campaigns, scenario editor, are all about as reliable as the original. Nicely done.
Some aspects are stylised or abstracted like the original - e.g. crossbow reload times, they are longer than before, but not as long as "reality" (not even hand-spanned ones). Still, mostly the balance of infantry-cavalry-artillery-seige-missile-buildings-forts etc etc. is very good.
Oh, and the campaign is pretty awesome. It's just a shame I not good enough to complete it!
Quality/Instructions: 4
I'll cover graphics last. In terms of the History section, it's all well and good. Doesn't look like a wikipedia job, provides a nice intro to each civilisation.
As I said earlier, installation was a breeze. A list of civilisation bonus is useful. However, there is a problem that alienated me at first. Even with a simple civ (e.g. Burgundy) there are a lot of "foreign" names which can make it tricky to know exactly what you're doing. Once you get into it this isn't a problem.
The only really, really major 'problem' with this mod is... the graphics.
The graphics are in some places excellent, in some places appauling. Units like the Trooper/Coustillier are beautiful (I am insanely jealous) - justifies creating them just for the graphics.
However, the Militia/Town lancer is... yeah, the opposite, I'll leave it as that.
Many units, even those with only slight modifications, are somewhere inbetween. Even ones that are really quite good (Halberd Militia) don't work aesthetically because they are too large/small/disproportioned or just in a different style to all the original AoK units. I appreciate a huge amount of work goes into even basic graphic work, and honestly some are great, just not in the context of the AoK skins.
Additional Comments:
I've said pretty much all I was going to say above... on the whole it's really well done, except it seems like the graphics guys went and made each unit without comparing them to each other at regular intervals. The AI in summary is functional but not ideal - it has the unrealistic weakness of sending everything in a stream. It's powerful (Moderate is the best I've beaten on a RM) but unrealistic.
As such I give this mod a 4.25. With an overhaul to the AI and a few replacement graphics, this would easily be higher. Perhaps as high as a full 5.
Overall very impressive and I will continue keenly checking back to see if/when it gets futhur developed. :)[Edited on 08/08/12 @ 04:56 PM]

Hello guys, I've a few problems with your mod. Graphics problems.
The icons and many buildings are wrong.
exemple : - heavy camel icon for the cannon galleon unit
- genoese university for the Austria's lumber camp...
I can't training sheeps in the town hall, the gold are not renplaced by silver, I don't have any access to policy decisions.
BUT I have something during the installation :
"Create folder : C\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\Age2_x1\backup"
following by the line "copy failed".
Maybe this is the problem. Help me please.

Hello, I like this mod very much, but I have some problems with it, which I didnt have when I had windows XP (now I have windows7).
When I play Bohemia, my unit speaks like mayans or aztecs, some units have female voice as greeting, the archery range is missing mounted crossbowman, I didnt see any in the game yet. Also uninstallation doesnt work, the files remain in AoEII directories and AoC setup option reports me an error. I had it installed on a clean installation of AoE II: The Conq. with 1.0c patch, tried to reinstall it 3 times already, but didnt help. Is it because I should do something special on win7 during the installation? Thank you |
