~The Back Gate of Mordor~
"Hold you're ground! Hold you're ground!" Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes, the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come, when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship. But it is not this day. An hour of woes, may shut it sealed when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not this day; this day we fight! By all that you hold dear, on this good earth, I bid you STAND! Men on the West!!!!!
Aragon's rally before the battle for the Black Gate
This is a game that I made for the AoKH Mini Game Competition. Hosted by Epic Commander, or as he is now called on the forums, Viper IV.
This features a LotR game rarely done on AoE II. The Battle of the Black Gate. Though it not an overly awesome game, it will keep you on your toes, as your limited forces must hold out against a never ending army of orcs. It doesn't matter how many orcs you kill. What matters is how long your lines can hold, and that you are able to keep you troops organized as long as possible.
This game has some neat features however:
~Magic
~Changing a unit from Archer to Swordsman
~Detailed ruin
~Good looking wasteland. (or is that an oximoron)
~Average looking fortress of Mordor
~Good instructions
~An "egde of your seat" game
~THANKS~
Thanks Oliver for making Renaissance. Which is needed to play this game.
Thanks to Tanneur for taking care of the blacksmith.
Thanks Epic Commander for Hosting the competition.
Lastly, thank you for downloading. Please comment, or review.
~DATA~
Renaissance must be installed in order to play this game.
~IN CLOSING~
Thanks for downloading, and I hope you enjoy this game.

No bug, you need Renaissance installed to play the scenario (I will update the description in a minute or two to make that more readable). After installing, from Single Player click Map Editor, then Create Scenario, the game engine will load the changes. Through Menu, Quit to Main Menu. The scenario will play without crash. |

'MGC08 - ~The Black Gate of Mordor~' is a single scenario design entered into the Age of Kings Heaven Minigame Competition of 2008, hosted by Epic Commander at the Scenario Design forum. The subsequent file is a mini-game, designed on a 25x25 sized-map, and depicts the fictitious event of the Battle at the Black Gate in J.R.R Tolkien's 'the Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King'.
As Frodo and Sam scavenge toward the dominating feature of Mount Doom in Mordor, an unlikely alliance of men make a stand at the Black Gate, led by the heir to Gondor's throne Aragorn and the remnants of the Fellowship. Ten thousand orcs descend upon the small force of men, allowing Frodo and Sam the opportunity to reach Mount Doom unperturbed to at last destroy the ring. This is where the story starts, and where the player takes up the fight in this mini-game...
PLAYABILITY: The file is primarily a defend-the-spot design, designed on a 25x25 sized-map, and however the player must make his stand before the Black Gate that leads into Mordor for an unknown portion of time until Frodo and Sam are able to destroy the ring at Mount Doom, leading to the destruction of Sauron and his vast army. The scenario overall is quite fun, but overly frustrating with countless reloads because the file is often too difficult to win, with the author even stating that it took him at least ten tries. After just a few minutes in-game, there were too many enemy units coming against me and with too few men to defend against them the scenario came down to merely trying to hold out long enough before an important unit died. Although I believe this was the author's intention, I also believe that the idea could have been implemented much better here. Often my units were surrounded, swarmed would be a more accurate word, with little say on my behalf and many times at a certain point in the game important units were slain before I could reach a victory condition. Enemy waves would work well here, or at least a constrained limit on how many enemy units could be spawned during certain parts of the battle. In any case, the scenario is quite fun, very difficult, but possible to pull through. 3.0
BALANCE: The author suggests playing on moderate difficulty or higher; I did this, but after failing to hold out several times, and becoming increasingly annoyed, I opted instead to play on standard, at least hoping for a change in my luck. At last, after much heart ache and deliberation, I finally pulled through. The enemy attacking as a great swarm left a lot to be desired in terms of strategy though, and all I could do was keep hitting the F3 button to pause the game and assess the situation after every few seconds, in order to properly micromanage my units and keep them from running outside the ruins where they would become isolated and killed. This is a very difficult game, too much so, and difficulty-dynamic triggers would work well here, plus a few other changes besides to limit how many enemy units can actually be spawned at any given time. 2.0
CREATIVITY: Although creativity is average in this scenario, the whole concept is unique in its approach. The defend-the-spot style game play works well here, and other devices like selecting signs to activate spells around the battlefield, choosing Legolas to fight with a sword or bow during combat and the time-based defence, adds into the overall rating for this category. 4.0-
MAP DESIGN: The map design was above average, with minimal terrain mixing, plenty of eye candy and enough features in this 25x25-sized template to add interest. However, there were a few inconsistencies with the design, such as the terrain used in Mordor, which looks ugly as a carpet of rubble. However, I appreciated the little touches of smoke and dust about the map, as well as the cracks and craters in the earth before the Black Gate, adding to the overall atmosphere of the design. 3.0-
STORY/ INSTRUCTIONS: While I felt the story was rather a little-to-the-point, there was plenty of in-game text to evolve plot and plenty of instructions to help the player along, as well as a few hints for the horribly lost, which may or may not help. For a mini-game, I suppose there is little anything else the file could have covered. With everything said, I encountered only a few spelling mistakes. For example, the character "Eromer" should read as "Eomer". 4.0
CONCLUDING: 'MGC08 - ~The Black Gate of Mordor~' is a fun scenario, if only too difficult in areas, where difficulty-dynamic game play increasing or decreasing units hit points and attack points respectively would work well with many players here. As such, I believe that after a little further polishing, this file could be even better.
In a sentence - Challenging and fun, this mini-game is a fair adaptation of the battle before the Black Gate of Mordor.
In closing - A recommended download for LotR enthusiasts.[Edited on 09/29/16 @ 04:39 AM]

Well, after many months of inactivity, I return to reply to the review received.
I can understand the issues with playability and balance. I recently tried playing this game again and I couldn't beat it. I agree that a better system for making the units attack, like a "wave system" may be a good idea. My only defense is to say that I was rushed into making this game. I had a deadline to meet. There's my excuse; take it or leave it.
You give creativity a 3.0 but yet, I fail to see a single negative point mentioned. You first state that it's average, but then you mention a bunch of things that are unique to the game. I'm sorry, but I don't see how this deserves a three. I think it should be a 4.0 personally. Maybe with a - sign to make you feel better.
I see no reason to complain on the story/instructions rating. It was a fair rating. Same for map design. With that category you may have been too nice. ;)
So in closing, my only major complaint is creativity.
Thanks for the review. :)

Hey Dantares,
By average I mean the DtS style you implemented, which was quite standard, although it did work well for the mini-game. Aside from the creative employs not a lot really happened along the way. The concept of defending until Frodo and Sam destroyed the ring was unique, I felt. |
