I downloaded this on a whim, as the title caught my eye and the description was unusually literate for an unknown designer. As is to be expected from the title and trigger count this is not an epic saga, but it is a slightly amusing way of wasting a couple of minutes and a promising start to a longer story. I look forward to seeing more from this designer, and award this effort with an above average score.
Timothy's Little Adventure is a small scenario where the player completes a number of small errands to allow Timothy to become a pikeman. It lacks action or drama, but does have some humour, which gives it entertainment value. Happily, the designer has used a small map, which fits the idea well. There are no bugs to speak of (although the looping of the dialogue caused a slight mess) and although I can't say this stands out, it is not a waste of time.
The author obviously intended this to be effectively a playable cut-scene. There is never any threat encountered, as the scenario is purely to tell the brief story of Timothy. With this in mind, I have no reason to deduct marks.
The style and premise of the scenario is not particularly creative, with the player mostly doing back-and-forth messenger work. However, I liked small touches like the funny dialogue around the town and the first person objectives.
Map Design: 3-
The map is very small, depicting only the town where Timothy lives. The map is quite bare, but the author has mixed different road terrains to provide variation. The layout of the town and the designing of the area just past the guard left something to be desired. Fortunately, the scenario is not tedious, as the map suits the gameplay (such as it is) perfectly. For this reason, the map serves better than a random map would have done.
The story is not terribly exciting, but the spelling, grammar and instructions are all fine. As mentioned before, I enjoyed the idle chat of the townspeople. There is even a bonus piece on the history of the spear! The story stands alone, but has not yet had the opportunity to score higher due to being so short and relatively uneventful. The future adventures of Timothy look promising.
I gather that the author uploaded this mainly to get feedback, which is the main reason for this review. With this in mind, I suggest the author takes a look at the various forums, top rated scenarios and guides if they want to improve. Some obvious suggestions so far:
+ Use triggers to remove the ends of palisade walls, which look ugly.
+ Develop the humour in the game, which is the main feature so far.
+ The errands could perhaps use a little more variety, or interactivity, to keep people interested.
