My entry to this year's Pretty Town Contest. It was not within the winning three, but was still fun to make =] I put quite a bit of work in it and the fact it isnt a winner doesnt mean its ugly, so just hit the download button and explore my small map.
Being a scenario without combat or puzzles, this file is very different from most. It has been reviewed as such.
As pretty towns go, this wasn't particularly enjoyable. It is very short, and nothing stands out as warranting a second glance. Its just a case of wandering through and looking at everything.
The aim of entries to Pretty Town Contest is to have a town, which is pretty, that the player can walk around and observe. It manages these goals.
There simply isn't enough going on in this. In other PTC entries I have seen in-game story, but there is none in this. There's no conversation, the only triggers seem to be renames and people being moved. There is one good use of the waterfall trick.
Map Design: 4
The map design is very good compared to normal maps, with substantial mixing. However, compared to a PTC entry, it is sub par, hence not being in the top 3. The player is presented with a very realistic forest, and an excellent town. However, the best map design is the sea, which sadly extends mostly out of the player's line of sight, hiding its full detail.
No instructions necessary. All of the story is given in scenario instructions. A possible complaint is that I wasn't warned in an obvious way that the game ends when I visit the royal chambers.
There are several simple things needed to improve this. The map would be improved by adding some eyecandy, adding some textual conversation would improve it across the board and make it much more enjoyable to play. These changes need not take more than 20 minutes and would vastly improve it.
