I just went trawling through the games and found this jewel :3 It's amazing!
Playability: 5-
I had a lot of fun playing this game. While there are limited things to experiment with and strategy is kind of set once you get past a certain point (or maybe I'm just not good at finding alternatives), there's the element of urgency and panic, which is wonderfully complemented by the rising troop numbers (and the music). Having to micro a little adds to that fear factor somewhat :P
Balance: 5-
Getting to level 8 or 9 can be done with nearly no strategy whatsoever - after that, knowing counters (strengths vs weaknesses) and a little bit of micro really comes into play, as it ramps up quite a bit after that. The early levels were generally easy for the troops given and can be done by just sending troops out, rinse and repeat as healing is entirely done before the next wave arrives. I did find that part slightly draggy, but as it did not take away too much from the game, it still gets a 5.
Creativity: 4
The soldier types got kind of repetitive after a while, though it's really not the fault of the creator (for the most part) - you can't really expect the occasional War Elephant to be thrown in without severely affecting balance. However, the fixed force doesn't really offer a lot, especially since there's only 1 melee foot unit... Could have been more fun with other melee foot units as well. Maybe it's just me, though...
Map Design: 5
The map was well designed and complemented the feeling of the game. Having the fort on a hill just adds to that "last stand" feeling, and during the game I didn't feel as if the map was constrictive/restrictive at all, despite it being only 15x15 - everything that has to be done can be done, and everything that can't be done is extraneous anyway. Wonderful, despite, or perhaps because, of its small size.
Story/Instructions: 5+
Instructions were very clear. Storyline was novel and interesting - can't really write more without spoiling it, heh. But it resonates, perhaps because it's something that most people can relate to. It adds a new dimension to the story outside of the game, and IMO is the best part of the scenario.
1st try: Level 15, 646 kills.
Got an issue to raise though: I'm running on windows 8.1. I deleted some of the palisade walls at the cliff to let Noah get closer to the front of the cliff and at some point in the game, round about level 11-13 or so (I didn't really notice), some soldiers got stuck on one of the cliff tiles, which later just... disappeared. So there was now a gap into the fort which I had to send guys to block up via single combat, hahaha. Might be a glitch? :/

Thanks a lot for the review! That bug/glitch is one I've never heard of before. I don't know whether it has anything to do with Windows 8, or if you played the scenario with AoFE or something else installed... anyway, if you play it again make sure not to delete any palisades! ;) |

Hahaha sure will! (NOT delete any palisades, that is :P)
Mmmm I very recently reinstalled TC (= original, no HD), so I don't have any modpacks or the like - not even FE. Might a W8 problem then. |

My Fort, My Empire is a small arcade style minigame by Lord Basse. Built as a Defend the Spott style scenario, players must use a small band of heroes to defeat wave after wave of enemy
Playability: 4
My Fort, My Empire is a highly enjoyable and challenging scenario where players must try to survive through sixteen levels of hostile attacks to defend their small, newly proclaimed, independent state. This minigame is highly enjoyable and that stems from the friendly competition that has formed within the community itself. As scenario that is more of an arcade style scenario than a story driven game, it is not about reaching the end and becoming victorious to see how the story pans out, it is all about seeing how far you can get. The scenario is highly enjoyable and presents players with challenging defend the spot style gameplay where you must face off against wave after wave of enemy units that grow stronger after each level. The story is highly entertaining and requires much tactical thinking and micromanagement. Mix that with your typical Basse humour and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect minigame. There are one or two bug within the scenario at times but nothing that prevents this from being a whole lot of fun.
Balance: 5
As an arcade style game the scenario starts off relatively easy and progressively get more and more challenging as the levels go by, to a point where it’s almost impossible to win. The scenario is not designed to be won as such but to see how many levels a player can get through. A leaderboard was set up when the scenario was first released with players stating how many levels they got though and how many kills they acquired. This setup a friendly competition within the community to try and be the best player of the game. In this sense the balance of the game was perfect because it was all about the community challenging each other and their own ability rather than trying to win against a certain AI. It is possible to win the scenario by completing all sixteen levels but this is reserved for more experience players. Just have a go and see how far you get. Then try it again and see if you can beat your previous score.
Creativity: 4
The creativity in the scenario stems from the community aspect that it creates. Having the community leaderboard really sets this scenario apart from other arcade styles like it because it creates a friendly competition between friends. I have not seen many other scenarios that do this. Beyond that you’ve also got a clever minigame scenario with a beautiful map design and lots of humour with its simple story. The scenario in itself it relatively generic in its style, beyond the community aspect there’s not much to set it apart from any other arcade minigame in the blacksmith, yet nearly every aspect of it is executed flawlessly.
Map Design: 5
Built on one of the smallest map sizes that function in game, 15x15 tiles, the scenario boast one of the most beautiful designs possible in such a small scale. Minigame scenario can be particularly difficult to design due to the lack of space to build upon. The author does well to make the map look busy with a simple town and plenty off eye candy whilst not affect the playability and pathfinding of the map in anyway. Terrain mixing is exquisite and the placement and layout of every single object has clearly been thought through well.
Story/Instructions: 5
The story is a classic Lord Basse tale of valour and a fight against oppression. The story follows a band of eccentric characters who decide to form their own independent state in an act of rebellion again their nations rulers. This act of rebellion does not go unnoticed as the rulers send their entire army to squash these rebels. The scenario sets up its simple premise very well and includes some great quirky dialogue and typical humour one would come to expect from this author. There’s is plenty of work and thought put into the main ensemble of characters as their characters personalities come out during the gameplay. The instructions are written clearly and outline the objective of the scenario with a couple of helpful hints on how to survive offered as well.
Additional Comments:
Overall this is a brilliant little minigame which is well worth downloading. Give it a go and see how many levels you can pass.
Thanks
Possidon

Hey Basse, you might not be believing it, but I am one of the winners! I made it till the final level! Actually I used my monk and the heavy cavarly archer, also noah and the harald hadrdade guy ( forgot his name :P ) within the gates and then locked the gates. I had to convert many units too. I couldn't find the cheat, but I won without it by using tactics. The melee and sword units like harry himself were useless for me.
Maybe I can find some time to write you a review later. |
