i'm new to the forums, hi

So we know france, britain, and spain are in tha game. I was looking at the pictures released from IGN, and noticed a flag of a country i have never seen. It is seen twice, on top of two buildings. at first i thought france... no, colours go vertically there. Croatia? no, red is at the top of croatia. am i missing something? is this and obvious flag? or did ES slip up?

The flag with blue on top, white second and red in the bottom is the flag of Serbia andMontenegro.

I looked through a flag database at http://www.flags.net/index.php but was unable to find an exact match. Egypt was really close, though. Link to image

EDIT: Crotia looks really close, too. However, I haven't seen any flag that has the black on top and red on bottom.

Interesting. It does look like a close match between it and the German colonial flag. If I'm not mistaken though, wasn't the flag made in 1872? The games timespan is to 1850 (when the Industrial age began).

Go here for a closer look at German Colonial Flags etc.

Perhaps it is an attempt to portray the German Colonials in America who outnumbered the English (Pennsylvania) or provide Imperial Expansion for a later German Colonial Power.

That can't be right.

That was the flag of Germany from 1913-1916...

And green and red doesn't match...

Look...even under high magnification.

It's red...not green.

You're right, MW. There's a chance it could still be Germany (despite the incorrect flag), but they weren't big (or not at all) in the colonization of America IIRC.

In about 1700, the civs that were big were the English, French, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, and Danish. (And for an eighth civ, the US could be added.)

US only comes into play after the revolution though. I doubt it's included (the others all sound right, however).

I'm going to guess Germany or Italy for number 8 (although I know neither of them were very "big").

And it may be Germany in the picture...the angle could throw the color off.

Don't forget Russia.....Colony in Alaska

We know from their interview that they are concentrated on New World America(North/Central/South.

Who were the European Colonials in America?

Spain
Britian
France
Netherlands
Portugal
Sweden
Russia
Denmark
Does that rule out Germany?

And will there be a native American civ in the 8 or will that be in a 4 civ expansion pack ?

Russia had no claim to any of North America except for Alaska; Germany or Italy are far more likely.

Russia was in Alaska, so they aren't going to concentrate on that part of the Americas to my knowledge. And there also isn't any Native Americans civs - they're for "alliances" only (and bonus units I guess).

England
France
The Netherlands (Dutch)
Portugal
Spain
Sweden
Denmark
Germany (Adder told me about Hessian mercinaries during the revolution) OR Italy

Yep...the Brits hired German soldiers...there is bound to be at least a scenario dedicated to fighting/alliancing with them. That leds to a civ.

The flag certainly looks like German Colonial Flag compared to the other countries mentioned.

It just might be the hint they referred to in changing history a bit.Provides for an interesting twist of military fortune in America.Actually before the American revolution there were more Germans in America than English.

The Hessians were British Mercenaries, not colonials.

Remember that the German Duke of Braunschweig-Hannover became King of England following the Protestent line of the Stuarts thru the Rhine Palatinate and the ban on Catholic monarchs.

Very true, but it's still an excuse to put the Germans into the game. Although I bet the Hessians never got any building done since they prolly resided in British military areas.

I'm going to research the Germans in the 1600-1800's more to see if I can find something.

If this is true, they'd still be considered English by the game standards. I'm not sure England would invade as two separate civilizations. (Unless I misunderstood you...?)

the prussian (i dont belive prussia united germany until AFTER 1860) soldures played very much a similar role to that of the swiss, they were mass mercinaries, in fact they were so much so, that nations would get german mercs exclusivly (assuming the swiss soldures were being bought by the french as usual.)

Though I don't think Russia are going to be in, I also don't think Italy have a chance. Italy wasn't a unified country until the late 19th century, which is out of this games span.

USA is also unlikely because they have no HomeCity thousands of miles away safe from any attacks which they can safely upgrade.

Having the Germans is an excellent "what if" type of insert that has already got everybody thinking of possibilities.

No one else (country) could stir up more discussion and anticipation.Certainly not Austria-Hungary or Russia nor Italy.

Prussian military might was just getting started around 1860's but the German's as a people came to America following the 30 years war and sought religous freedom.

Although not formally recognised like France/Britian/Spain/Portugal/Netherlands with colonial holdings, non the less, imigration from German States was very large.

If you think about "world colonial powers", Germany is right up there.Belgium is another but very limited in colonies and not a good choice for military.Dennmark is not that great either.

That pretty much gives me the idea:
Britian,France,Spain,Netherlands,Germany,Portugal,Russia,Sweden

However Italy could be the 8th since Sweden was pretty much a second rate power after Napoleon.
Sub Austria-Hungary for Portugal and you got the Great Powers of the Napoleonic era.
