In previous games made by ES we see naval battles being fought in odd positions like ships stern(cant remember what a front of a ship is called) facing each other instead of the side. How will naval battles be handeled in AoE III? Would the ships fire from the sides this time and will the boats rock a bit?

naval battle at the time was pretty straight forward. you line your ships up, the enemy lines their ships up and you sail at each other, throwing anything you've got at them as you go past. tactics were pretty non-existant, even in the superior sea powers like the british. fleet commands back then were given buy raising colored flags and from my understanding could be complicated to get the message across to an entire fleet of shits. it wasnt really that easy to pull off a lot of complicated shit on the fly.

The naval battles really need improvement for AOEIII, I'm hoping it won't at all be like it was in other AOE games.

I'd like to be able to upgrade individual vessels (i.e., crew, sail, cannon batteries, shot type, broadside strength, etc.). Also, perhaps ships shouldn't count towards your population limit. With all ES games (particularly AoM and AoE), you'd never have enough population space for a decent economy, an army, AS WELL as a navy. Perhaps ships don't cost any resources, but you can only build a certain number of them.

im sure they will cost resources, a strong navy was important at this time and it would be completely unrealistic and a bad development decision (IMO) if they made ships free. nations spent fortunes on their navy, and those that let theirs slack lost their place in the world.

Ships should cost against the population, but then the crew to man the ship should. You build a boat, and then you "click" on the boat and select the type of seamates you want to "Hire" for the boat:

(I'm not to good with the names of the boats, so just tell me if you have a better name)
Basic Seaman: Cost 3 population, The seamates that make the ship move, if the boat has cannons, your cannons will fire VERY slowly.
Extra Seaman: 1 population, Increases the speed of the boat by a certain (small) amount. Most boats have a maximum amount of Seaman that it can have.
Cannon Master: 1 population, Increases the firerate of ALL cannons, but not the amount of cannons fired at the same time.
Cannoneer: 1 population, Increases the amount of cannons fired by 1 until you reach the maximum number of cannons that particular ship can hold.
You can also place footsoldier (no mounted units) on top of the boat. However, each boat has a maximum number of units it can have, including the Seaman and Cannoneers. Also, some ships require less to operate (A fishing ship only requires 1 to operate) and other (like a huge ship that requires 5 to operate) require more.

Fishing Ship: 3 slots, only requires 1 to operate.
Tradeship: 4 slots, only requires 1 to operate.
Transport ship: 21 slots, only requires 1 to operate.
and etc...

Whoaskedu: What you propose is interesting, but far too complicated. Since in most games navy plays a small role compared to armies (except in maps like islands, which are not that often played) I doubt they will make such a complex system.

I'm pretty sure that the ships will rock when shot (or maybe when they shoot, too) since there will be a physics engine.

The buildings are supposed to have real damage, like holes and stuff, so I'm hoping ships will also have realistic damage like this.

My bet is that naval battles will be more against Pirates, Privateers and Buccaneers.

Protecting trade routes etc.

Small scale battles on the Great Lakes perhaps.Riverine flotilla etc.

No big naval engagements during this time in America like in Europe.

War of 1812 is the exception.

WhoAskedU, why are you assuming that AoE3 will have AoM's stupid population slot system?

That's a good idea. I'd like to see naval trade an essential part of the game.

Yes, I don't think Ive ever seen naval trade in any AoK game ever...I've only ever used it against cpu opponents who are all but dead.

I am not assuming. Lets just see it this way. You HAVE to build 2 units to make a boat move. You can take those two units off the boat and if one of those units die, you only lose one pop slot. The Boat cost 0 population slots. It the units that it needs to move the boat that requires the slots.

This problem was solved in Cossacks with all the guns being side mounted (exception for the howitzer on the Galley) so that ships couldn't fire from the front.
