We outta make Debate teams. Rules like no flaming, only serious responses, you can only respond when it is your turn, ect. SWP is on my team, we can be called the Master Debaters! This is just an idea, if anyone wants to take it and fly with it or if you have suggestions, or is you think it is stupid you can say that as well, I am man I can take!

Ballistix; I would prefer a person with strong environmental views, but if I cannot find anyone else; then I'll hire you.

The Adder; you are also pro-environmental, right?

railroad; you actually sound a bit like me. I am neutral to many issues except for the environment, although I have developed a view to some other issues ever since I entered 8th grade (Before 8th grade, I was an environmentalist with no other major views). I know have views on a few ohter issues; although they are not as strong as my view on the environment or energy are.

I would like to say this was just a suggestion, and I am not doing anywork towards this, so somebody else who is not as lazy and stupid as I should get this started, seems to be enough support.

I'll join this debating thing.

Quote:

Is an environmentalists, or at least moderately supports the views of environmentalists
Is generally liberal in many regards
Is a heathen, so that I can have support in religious debates
Believes in the Big bang Theory and evolution

I'd say that I fit the latter three categories quite well; I've had some experience at the Library (at HG Main) debating fundies, and to be perfectly honest, I'd say I've done quite well. As for environmentalism, I'm probably more neutral about that than the others.

Okay;

Bosefus mentioned not wanting to run this. I'd be willing if there were no objections. Of course to do this, I'd need to set up a schedule (deciding who debates against who and on what) The Topics would be debated by everyone, and each team would have to debate on something at least once.

In the Speech and debate class we are doing student congress. Let me give you an idea on how that is run, because I'd probably use the same format.

A Bill/resolution is written by a student-In this case a topic would be chosen by those participating upon the judges approval.

The Topic would then be given a presentation speech by one of the team members. After the presentation speech there would be a short period of questioning.

After the questions we would go to a PRO speech. This would be done By someone debating that is PRO that topic. Then There would be a period of questions. After the Questions there would be a CON speech, given by someone who is against that idea.

After TWO of EACH speech, we can continue debating this or vote on whether we think it's a good thing to do or not.

So.. What do you guys think?

This is all, that is it.

I don't like the part where you ask questions after the topic is revealed. A better way would be...

The topic is revealed, then maybe a little bit of preperation time or just start. The PRO/affirmitive team starts off, after that's done the CON/negative team gives their speech. Once the CON team is done, then the PRO team gives their second speech to knock down the negative team's arguments and re-establish their arguments if it was knocked down by the CON team earlier. After, the CON team can give their second speech, which is similar to the second speech of the PRO's team. Once this is done, we have question period to knock down the opponent's arguments or try to make a fool out of them.(No personal attacks) After, the negative team gives their concluding speech and followed by the affirmitive team.

The judges tally the arguments/contentions that are left standing. Whichever team has the most wins.

I think this would be simpler than your way because there are too many question periods. Also, it's a better way of ending the debate too.

Railroad,

Good idea. More questions mean this: More chances for the opposing teams to shoot down the other team. You can ask questions that make the idea look bad or good. So, How do you guys want to do this? I'd be more then willing to do things.

I know more questions will give more chances for opponents to knock down your arguments, but if there are too many question periods to ask, the questions will start to get off topic as people asks a question based on the previous question. Eventually it will have nothing to do with the topic at all.

This sounds good. We need someone respected to take charge and start this. I'd recommend stern rules from the beginning of no flaming (obviously) and no religous debates (they're unprovable and the posts will get closed).

For making teams I suggest either completely random selection (which might make things interesting ) or well-planned teams based on similar view (like Simfish suggested).

If a respectable member of the community steps forward, we can get this started.

I have one more idea for the debate. Each team has to be both negative and affirmitive at least once in order to win. This way everyone has to do the same thing, so it's fair.

Mobely wants to do this, let him host it.

LOL; I'd like to see this idea posted in Outside Discussions; and I would like to see the reaction if Fett and Phoenix were placed on the same team.

Yeah, we need to get going...I say we have a "sign-up" thread to make it easier and make a clear statement that this is getting past the brainstorming stage.
