Mount&Blade has just been released, after being in development for awhile; it's a single player RPG thing, quite unique and very fun. You start out randomly in one of the five (six?) countries on the map, and can do almost anything with time. Gain favor of kings to command their armies, or start a war somewhere else just to take over your country's castle, or go around killing villages like a crazed hamster, etc.

I just started playing it a few days ago...Anyone else tried it?

Horsefighting is quite simple, as soon as youve played a few battles on horseback; the tactics will come automatically ;p

Oh, and I got the full game

Those who don't have it yet, I can only suggest to go get it now. Purchasing the serial key at the Taleworlds website is now actually slightly cheaper than with the previous version: I paid about €26 incl VAT whereas the previous one cost 30 without VAT. Who knows, they might up the price again later on.

I was planning to buy the retail copy, but the only shop that sells it in the UK is WHSmith as far as I am aware and supply is limited according to their website so I doubt it'll be in my local shop (though I haven't checked yet).

However, seeing as I need to purchase a book for English Literature (critical notes and stuff about Tennyson's poetry *joy*) I need to order it off Play.com....so while I'm there I'll order a copy of Mount and Blade.

My tactic in battle is often start mounted with a crossbow and/or some javelins and then dismountand attack the enemey on foot once my ammo is used up. But most of the time, plate armour with a tall shield on my back and armed with a heavy voulge I can take down anything.
Yeah, plate mail on easiest diffculty (default difficulty: easiest = 1/4th damage taken) is really cheap, but fun to use.

If you dismount, you're just making things harder for yourself.

Unless you're an archer. But a high-level experienced archer is twice as deadly from horseback.

I find foot fighting more fun, so I usually dismount and fight with my army instead of mounted.

However, if I need to I trample lines of enemy footmen with me Heavy Charger.

Ive got one spirited courser and one spirited charger, the courser for cav and the charger for infantry ^^

Horse fighting is maybe harder, but you are also way harder to hit. And, using polearms to get "couched lance damage" kills will deliver 100+ damage even in lvl 3.

My brother killed 11 looters on horseback on lvl 2, all alone, with almost no experience on this game at all.

Hail the horses

It seems I have backed the wrong kingdom in the form of the Nords (I played around with them in previous version and they were unstoppable). They are at war with everyone but they made peace with the Vaegirs and despite being "at war" they have had no attack apart from the odd raid from Swadia.

The problem is the fact King Ragnar is a total tool, not ralllying the troops at all as he "rests" at Sargoth while the Rhodoks have a war party and already taken two castles. I've tried my best when at war with the Vaegirs, taking two castles for the kingdom yet they were left undefended by the lords who get them and recieve no military aid - they then are taken by the Khergits so I retake them, but again they are lost.

I asked for my to be null and void and the King said yes with no ill will, but I personally still have negative relations with the nations I was at war with while under the Nordic banner. So it seems I'll have to pay 17k to bring peace, and then finally join the ranks of the Swadians.

That said, I think I'll just stick as a vassal to King Ragnar for now with my massive tracts of land containing one village. However, I plan just to do lots of quests from the village elder to get more and better troops from recruitment and do the tourny circuit (which I was doing at the start of the game which earned me enough renown to join a faction without doing any quests/mercenary service) and with the money join the Swadians.

I now have over 600 kills with my character, and 1 town, 1 castle, and 5 villages. I decided to try to restore one of the claimants to the throne, and it is going quite well. We have taken about half of Rhoduks territory, and I have the King in jail so he can't Marshall a new army into the field.

I lately eliminated 160/400 of a city (Reyvadin)'s garrison, with only 40 men

You can get strong easily at the start when you first complete all melee fights at the training field, make your way SAFELY to the Khergit Khanate (purple) and recruit volunteers. Never ever take mercenaries or non-horsemen.

At this point, train on steppe bandits, get your band to at least 30 men and then just start raiding Vaegir and Rhodok territories. Start with looting villages and take some caravans as snack ;p.

After some time you will be strong enough to raid lord's parties. Combine this with the standard looting and raiding for the high ransoms. Also train Prisoner Management very high. 50 per prisoner isnt impressive, but when you bring 30 prisoners from every raiding "campaign", it will give you a welcome bonus, believe me.

However, ransom brokers are rare (only in taverns, and certainly not in every tavern ) If somewhere is a tournament, save, go to the happening, place 100 bet on yourself, win, bet, win, bet etc. to get about 4k extra in a short time

Mercs are perfectly okay. At one point, I had an indestructible army of 100 merc cavalry. I took down the Yellow guys force (4 smth lords and the king, men about 400 or more) and lost very VERY few units killed (maybe 15 smth), though I lost 85 or so wounded. YAY SURGERY!). Took down the last 30 smth units myself. Got the king and one lord as hostages.

Also, ransom brokers aren't rare at all. Though it might be my style of playing (direct war, originating from one city), since I am the commander, and I can rally lords and even the KING whenever I need.

I'm with the Cyan btw.

Rhodok sharpshooters own. High damage from crossbow, good armor, a huge board shield, and a short sword.

Enemy Charging? Get them in a spread formation, hold fire until enemy in vision range, then let your crossbow bolts fill the sky. They can fire about twice, then go in and pwn melee.

Anyway. Scud, maybe you should find Lethwin Far-Seeker (ask a traveller for a claimant's location). Tell him you want to help him reclaim the Nord throne. Suddenly you are the Marshall of the Nord Rebellion. Take all the Nord cities/castles/towns and you kill da nords. You can also convince Lords to join you if you have high enough persuasion skill + use the right argument + they already like you.

No, everything is ok now, more than ok, I am now lord of Suno and have a grand army of top-tier huscarls and many more in reserve defending Suno.

The Rhodoks and the Swadians are pretty much on the ropes and I have personally killed around 1,700 enemies with the Rhodoks being pushed into the North Eastern part of the map. The Swadians are now a small nation in the centre who are being attacked from all sides.

I can pretty much take castles with my own party (like I did with Suno) but if need be, due to my high standards with the king, I can get him to follow me around and join my battles.

Some of those vaegir castles are HARD SHIT to take though. Amazingly defensive layout + mounds of marksmen. I tried using my army of about 50 huskarls to take one of 'em (forgot name), and the defensive layout was harddddd. Also they had about 30 marksmen and a shitload of knights. I got killed completely lol.

Fun to read the experiences of some other people!

Personally I'm in the service of the kingdom of Vaegirs. We (mostly me) have captured the entire kingdom of Nords, leaving only the city of Tihr to them, after which peace was signed (I would have taken that too, but alas, it was not to be). I've killed some 800 men, am now level 25 and own the city of Wercheg and a small village. Unfortunately king Yaroglek did not allow me to keep any of the other fortresses or that other Nord city I captured, despite me doing loads of jobs for him and now being his 100% best friend. Still though, Wercheg on its own is already an amazing place to hold!

The Rhodoks are now down to only Veluca and two castles, and the good thing is that I am now marhasll of the Nords. I also have another town (some Rhodok one) to add to my holdings giving me a total of two towns, two villages and one castle.

The Swadians only have three major towns left and castles bordering them, so once the Rhodoks are gone, I'll focus of wiping them out.....but then who next? I'm friendly with everyone else.

There were once 1100 besieging a castle of my faction. I went around with my army of 45 men with mostly Vaegir knights, ie all cav and incredibly fast, and led the entire Nord army on a merry goose chase over the entire map. Then I hurried back and defeated a few of their straggler armies. It was great.

Quickest way to become marshall (and most fun!) is to rebel against a kingdom. Find the right claimant and get enough renown, and you can just take towns. The claimant will give you whatever you ask for.

Once you defeat a faction (take all towns/castles), all of the lords from that faction will join you, and you'll become the marshall. However, you'll want to keep your lord relations up so they keep voting you in as marshall. >_>
