In this game, we'll be playing as a man named Ernest Clodfelter. Ernest is your everyday citizen with a 9-5 job, a decently-sized mortgage, and an intense
dislike of wasps. Nothing stands out about Ernest whatsoever except for the fact that he has some truly kickass shoes, given to him
by his late grandfather.

Oh, and this morning Ernest woke up with a head full
of other peoples' voices. That's pretty unusual so we should add that to the list.

Our goal is to control the voices in Ernest's head and help him to overcome obstacles on his path to self-fulfillment. Or death. Whichever comes first, really.

----------------------------------------------------------
How the game works:

On a fairly regular timeline that is still TBD, I'll post in this thread with the next part of our journey. In between updates, all of you can either suggest a course of action for Ernest to take, or vote on a suggestion that has already been given. At the end of the day, Ernest will follow the suggestion with the most votes. In the event of a tie, he'll pick one of the tied actions at random.

To make a suggestion, simply bold it.

To vote for someone else's suggestion, type Vote: "Suggestion".

Most of the time the game will be pretty free-form, so you'll be able to come up with a suggestion at will. Occasionally, however, I'll present you with a bulleted list of options and you'll need to pick from among those.
----------------------------------------------------------

Please treat Ernest well - he's counting on all of you.

Ernest Clodfelter woke up with a start. His head hurt. Actually, it hurt a lot. He reached over to shut off his alarm, but it was silent. Ernest must have slept through it again. Now he would definitely be late.

Ernest frowned. "Late for....what?" he thought. Suddenly, he realized that he couldn't remember what he had to do that day. And come to think of it, he couldn't remember anything at all, save for his name and that time he tripped on the stage at his college graduation. There were some memories that refused to be forgotten, apparently. What's more, Ernest's mind felt...different somehow. Like it was filled to the brim with something. Was this how smart people felt? But no, his thoughts were disoriented and fragmented. Something was definitely wrong. It was almost as if there were other voices in his head with him.

Ernest groaned, and pushed the covers off of him and rolled out of bed. "I hate...." - Ernest glanced at the calendar - "Wednesday mornings" he thought. All of a sudden, a cell phone on the bedside table began to ring. Ernest reached for it, and unlocked
it without thinking. Muscle memory was a helluva thing. The voice on the other end came through clearly and sharply.

"Hey asshole, were you planning on coming into work today?"

Ernest's mind raced as he figure out what to say in reply. "I...."

"Hey it's all good, take your time. I'm sure the boss won't notice that you're 3 hours late." With that, the line clicked and went dead.

Ernest sighed. He had lost his memory, but couldn't help feeling that he screwed up like this fairly often. Glancing at a bulletin board above his head, he saw a bus pass pinned to the middle of the board. Could he get to work that way? And come to think of it, where was work?

What should Ernest do?

Call to work again and explain that you're not feeling too well.

It's best to just be honest here: This ain't gonna work. Ernest's mind is a mess, his memory's gone, he's already very late, he's got a bad headache; in short, even if he goes to work, he won't be useful to the boss anyway. All we can really hope for is that the boss comprehends this and believes Ernest.

This will buy us some time to figure out what's going on.

Vote: call in sick

Then, assuming this is a country with a civilised system of healthcare provision, take ibuprofen and go the GP's triage clinic. If this is a recurring problem, he needs medical attention.

In this scenario, does Ernest know how to call 'work'? The call sounds like it came from a co-worker and not the person he would need to call.

What's the hurry anyway? Apparently Ernest is 3 hours late and the boss has not yet noticed. It's not like we're in any position to carry a conversation, unless we actually want to try to persuade the boss that Ernest has 'near-total amnesia'.

Read list of contacts on phone, and read any recent text messages.

Note: In some cases, Ernest will follow a suggestion even if it isn't the primary one, as long as it moves the narrative forward in a reasonable way and does not conflict with the primary action. These restrictions don't apply to the primary action; Ernest will always perform or at least attempt the suggestion with the most votes.
Ernest held up his cell phone again and tapped the "Recent Calls" tab. He didn't recognize the number that had just called him, but then again he didn't recognize most things at the moment. Hesitantly, he tapped his finger again to call the number back. It rang seven or eight times and then went to voicemail.

"Hi," the message said, "you've reached James Mavis with Serendipity Inc. Please leave your name and number and I'll get back to you as soon as I can."

Ernest hung up the phone and sighed. There was no point in leaving a message; he had no idea what he would say or even exactly who this person was to him. His finger absentmindedly went to the "Messages" tab. His messages folder was completely empty. That was strange. Frowning, he checked his Contacts list. He only had three contacts: Boss, Dad, and Karen. What the hell? Was he really this unpopular? Ernest brushed these thoughts aside and dialed "Boss". His first priority would be to deal with the only problem he knew he could address. The line rang twice, and then there was a click on the other end.

"Hullo...?" he heard a bored female voice say.

"Uh, yes...hi.." Ernest replied. "Is this...uh...my boss?"

The voice snorted. "That's a good one, Ernie boy. Bossman is in a meeting right now but I can deliver a message."

"Y..yes..could you please tell him that I'm feeling very sick and won't be able to make it in to work today?"

"Sure thing, Ernie," the voice replied. "And hey, when are you gonna get me flowers again? You used to be so sweet but recently I've barely heard from you."

"Uh...s-soon..." Ernie stammered. "Sorry, I've had a lot on my plate lately."

"Yeah, alright. I'll give the boss your message. You take care now." With that, the line clicked and went dead.

Ernest rubbed his hands through his hair. This day had already been supremely stressful, and looking at his phone he could tell it was only 12:14 pm. He needed to find answers somehow. Maybe he should do his best to follow his normal schedule in the hopes that he'd suddenly regain his memory? He could start by searching the house for any clues. Or should he go to the doctor? This memory thing could be a sign of a terrible disease or some other kind of emergency.

Search the house. Computers will have passwords; he cannot remember them and they will be useless. A doctor... how will he get there? Does he know the way? Or the bus schedule? Does he know how to drive?

No, search the house. Jog his memory with the everyday things.

My computer doesn't have a password

Have a slight panic attack and then search the house is my suggestion.

Just pooping in to say I have every intention of reviving and continuing this thread, it was just on the back burner for a bit as I dealt with other more pressing stuff. I'll have it restarted within the next day or so.
