In case you didn't follow the Gamescom 2017 livestream, yes, both AoE4 and a definitive edition (remake?) of AoE2 are in the works.

Personally, as with any news surrounding AoE (AoE Online and Castle Siege come to mind), I'm very torn. On the one hand, any news of a new Age game is incredibly exciting. If all goes well, AoE4 could revive the series and become the successor that AoE3 never quite was. Or it could be an awful cash grab not worthy of the AoE title.

The AoE2 definitive edition on the other hand could very well splinter the community even further: once it's out there will be HD on Steam, DE for Windows Store, and some of us will still prefer the UserPatch version. Getting any kind of compatibility between the game versions could be a nightmare. Are any scenarios from the original game going to be playable in the Definitive Edition, for example, if the game is remade from the ground up?

Thoughts?

You might be overlooking that AoE2 DE looks like its on the windows store only. That fact alone will greatly undermine reception, good, great or bad.

It really isnt up to the developers only to make a great game Titanfall2 was highly lauded by critics and was a flop for various reason. A number of things need to come together for success.

Titanfall2
I loved that game haha. Especially the time traveling level, that was DOOOOOOPE.

You're right though. The biggest concern about the Windows Store is the obvious lack of 'workshop' type scenario/campaign/mod distribution and the general closing down and restrictions of the apps (no mods, no nothing).

Maybe everyone will use AOKH to host those things

I talked today to some developers of the DEs ... For AoE 1 DE there won't be any triggers, but for AoE2 DE they will try to add new triggers. Maybe this could be a reason to move from HD to DE

I would suggest they just copy-paste the latest version of the UserPatch and work from there.

UP already does pretty much everything the HD editor does, and then some. If AoE2 DE isn't a big improvement on both, there will be little incentive for any designer to migrate, especially when the DE version is already limited by being a Windows Store exclusive.

Looking at your sig, Basse, I felt the urge to calculate my AoKH flex-ability in terms of downloads. 51,000. Way behind you.
Only 26,000 here. I'm now downloading Basse's files, so we're even further behind.
I've got stupid question but is there any point for making mods for Age of Empire 2 since that it is going to get a definitive edition?
More correctly, Age of Empires 2 is going to get something called a definitive edition. Important distinction.

If it sucks, I assume nobody will bother with it. HD had juice because it was on Steam, a platform everyone uses now. DE is probably actually going to have to be a good game to be viable.

Huh. I thought they'd all be under NDAs.

As for L&T, I have no doubt that it will hold up. Many of the scenarios that are still considered the very best were made many, many years ago (Legends of Chila being one). And besides, L&T was always highly anticipated so it would be great just to see what became of it.
I don't think I'll ever finish it, but I'll try to get the game running this weekend and post some map- and screenshots. I worked very hard on this project, but it got caught up in so much megalomania it was nearly impossible to finish in the standard AoK editor, let alone bug test. I doubt anyone is using a 1280x960 monitor these days, too, which kind of ruins the cutscenes. Anyhow, let's see what comes out of it.

I know what that's like, haha. I had a huge project fall into that quagmire with 8 out of 20 scenarios more or less completed (yeah, it was going to have 20 scenarios. I was an idiot. )

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

As to Age of Empires 4, considering the concept art, I think if they want the game to be as much like the originals in terms of gameplay, the game will probably have different, anachronistic civilizations together. For example, the Romans would have a unit roster of legionaries and ballista, the Franks would have a roster of knights and crossbows, and the Americans would have a roster of musketeers and cannon, all in the same game and the same game-time, and ideally all balanced against one another.

Assuming, of course, that the multiple eras listed in this trailer aren't just nostalgic hype-building.

Think the trailer just told history of AoE. Nothing told about setting. Just that IV will come

At this point AoE4 could be set in any time period really. The trailer just seemed to cover the history of the series, like jernside said.

I do think it's unlkely that it will take a similar approach to Empire Earth, though, as that would be a big break from the usual four-ages-cycle. With AoE1 through 3 getting definitive editions around the same time, I also think it's unlikely that AoE4 will take place in any of the same time periods. Which basically leaves us with the 19th and 20th century.

My wild guess based on no particular evidence and more on wishful thinking, is that AoE4 could cover something like the years 1618 to 1914. That would mean a lot of overlap with AoE3, but it could also focus more on the homefront of the empires of the time, rather than the colonies that AoE3 did. Campaigns could include the 30 Years War, the War of the Spanish succession, the Great Northern War, Napoleon's Empire, the unification of Germany, the Crimean War, the Battle of Vienna, and so forth.

Or it'll just be WWI and WWII.

Im surprised so many here and elsewhere think the game wont cover the same time periods. To me, if your selling a game based on nostalgia it would need to be along the lines of a spiritual remake. Also the trailer invokes only images of past timelines...surely the marketing would clash greatly with a bombastic WW2 CoD style trailer later on.

Then again, Relic did make WW2 games lately and sci fi before that. Maybe thats why.

Going to be quite interesting just to see how this goes.

For AOE2: DE, I'd like to see basically Userpatch features, excellent Lobby and Ladder system, moderation, additional player slots, easy spectating, being able to play on Windows 7/8, Linux/Mac compatibility, map sizes between giant and ludicrous, more civs, better graphics which don't tax to much on the graphic card still, architecture sets for civs which aren't really properly represented by the one which they got now (Byz, Viks, Incas, Viets, Huns, Spanish...), different unit sets depending on culture and last but not least a healthy, growing community in SP as well as in MP.

I know that all this requests won't probably get all in the game but I really hope they won't **** it up hard as they did.

I have not much to say about AOE4 considering there are almost no information available right now.
