So, the first trailer for AoE2: DE was just released and the game is coming out as early as this fall. More news will hopefully come out of the on-going E3.

So far DE is looking like a new HD expansion with a lot of graphical updates. My main concern personally is with backwards compatibility, if older scenarios and campaigns can be expected to be playable in DE, or if they decide to wipe the slate clean.

Thoughts?

Really, I think a lot of these hopes are bit idealistic
Never said I had any hopes for the c++ scripting, tho
In my head, there's like 90% chance the editor will be just as broken and unpolished as HD's (if not even worse). But well, a man can dream.

Yes, a warcraft III level scenario editor for AOK DE would be great!

This video has managed to raises my hopes quite a bit tho.
The "new triggers" part got me interested (not to mention that the gameplay itself looks solid).

That actually has me more interested than all of the new graphics, civs and gameplay updated combined!

So you can research technologies and make units at the same time?

That sounds like a huge meta shift. The old flush/FC castle dichotomy will go away if you can maintain villager production while advancing to the next age.

Given that the voiceover man was talking about "preserving the core aspects of gameplay", I suspect that what he means is that you can queue different things up and they will do them one after the other.

I didn't know this was a thing until now. My first thought, of course, was "Why?" but after seeing some of the work in the trailers, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Yeah, same here. For some reason, adding new civs and stuff seems sort of basic. Not that it's a bad idea, it's just a simple idea. It's the kind of thing that an executive would do.

"I've never played an RTS and I've never even heard of Age of Empires before, but it looks like there are a bunch of civilizations you can play as. Add more of those. The players will like that, right?"

Whereas "more triggers" implies that the scenario editing experience is being improved. That's good for the longevity of the game, and the fact that they're putting dev time into it is a good sign that they're genuine about improving the game instead of purely cashing in on nostalgia.

I've asked Cysion about the possibility of a "map editor" week for us beta participants so we can try it out, and he essentially said it's possible but not guaranteed.

I'd like to see some improvements to the map editor but tbh I find the editor already currently very easy to work with.

Compare it to something like Age of Empires 3 editor where it's harder to find the objects you want to place for example.

There's obviously areas they can improve, but I hope they don't over complicate it or change it around too much that it's unrecognizable to the original.
