There were a bunch of neat Mods and even scenarios that apparently only work on the original AOK: The Conquerors. At least, they are listed as designed for "The Conquerors", and I failed to get them to install on the Steam HD version. Foremost among them are the RAW (ROme at War) Mod and the "A Christmas Story - Director's Cut" scenario.

The RAW Mod says that it uses the AOK:TC version.

So does that mean that I need to buy the original AOK CD and then buy the separate AOK:TC Expansion, for like 10$ each?

Or can I buy a kind of Gold Edition collection CD with multiple Expansions plus the original AOK? In other words if I buy an Expansion pack that includes the original AOK plus the Conquerors plus other Expansions, will I be able to get the Mods made for The Conquerors to work on it?

BTW, I only found two free downloads of AOK:TC online and their graphics don't work right on my system because I have a Windows 7 system and the usual several known "workarounds" like having "Screen resolution" run in the background do not work with this download version. So I am stuck buying the CD and then using those workarounds, I think.

I would buy an Age of Empires 2: The Conquerors expansion CD, or the Age of Empires 2: Gold Edition, which would include the Conquerors.

The 1.0c patch is available here on Age of Kings heaven.

Ooh, the Windows 7 color problem. I think the UserPatch solved that. I don't remember how I used UserPatch directly, if I did at all. What I did was install the client software for Voobly matchmaking service. It will download the 1.0f (iirc) patches and the 1.5RC patches that Voobly had assembled from the Internet which includes the UserPatch graphics fixes.

I feel that the Forgotten Empires mod was the pinnacle of AoE2. This is compatible with Voobly, although everybody's moved on to WololoKingdoms which is a mod that converts the Steam Age2HD assets for use in Voobly.

Thanks for replying. It sounds like you are saying that I should use the 1.0c patch if I am downloading the game from a Gold CD. I decided to buy a Gold CD pack on Ebay because it's simpler than making two purchases.

The main reason why I wanted to buy it was because I think that Basse's "Christmas Story- Director's Cut" Scenario will probably only work on the original CD version.

There is a Compatibility Mod for AOK:HD to get the original scenarios like that one to work. But unfortunately none of the color workarounds fixed the color problem for the Compatibility Mod.

There is also a scenario called El Gladiador that is also in the Blacksmith and I haven't been able to get that one's second scenario to progress beyond a certain glitch. My guess is that this could also be because I have been playing on the Steam version.

Thanks for mentioning Voobly's patch and the Userpatch. If the other workarounds don't fix it, I will try that one too, thanks.

Archer,

Here is the Gladiador Campaign:
http://aok.heavengames.com/blacksmith/showfile.php?fileid=881

The Scenario in question is the second one. It uses the RAW Mod, but you can probably play it without the mod just to see if it will work. A rider named Commodus is supposed to ride to the west corner due to a trigger, but in my experience in the AOK HD version, he only goes halfway, maybe because of an intervening trigger or because I'm playing on AOK:HD.

I would be interested if it works on yours, but if you don't want to go through the hassle of installing it, it's OK.

I second ArcherHombre's response.
