there's a handful of threads here talking about music discussion, preferences and whatnot, but anyone here make their own music, too? tell me what you think of mine, yeah?
I am especially good at playing on nerves (18y experience), and criticizing every possible kind of music I don't like. I am so virtuous, I can criticize even music I like.
I was always amazed how people could possibly think of such pieces of art as... well, Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, or Yes's whole Close to the Edge albums - they are long, long pieces, but not repetitive at all..
Who needs a sig, anyway.

You want long songs? Go for Burzum's "Tour Around the Transcendental Pillar of Singularity", only 25 minutes of Black Metal. How kewl is that?
Best long songs: Dry County by Bon Jovi, shine on you crazy diamond, lnog road out of eden... there are many more, but i can't think of them. deal with it.
Be quiet and talk not of things you know nothing of. Even more since the beforementioned song is practically a synth looping a 3 minute piece. Guess what it's good for?

My guitar lies in the closet, collecting dust, going out of tune, and brooding. I fear reintroducing it to the light, as it will doubtless attempt to exact revenge.
Also, because I'm lazy.

I play the flute and piccolo for my school band.
My favorite music that we played in band so far has been "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor and "Call of Courage" by someone who I'm too lazy to give credit to (Some woman, I believe).
I want to learn how to play guitar someday, but I'd probably be horrible .

I'm an outspoken music critic (you all know I am ) and I notice that you list Tupac Shakur as your only influence, thus I feel obligated to tell you what I think.
Your voice is creamy, smooth, you have a nice upper range, very R&Bish. Your style is very poppy, so your voice meshes in well with the simplistic beat (not always a good thing), and I don't mind the vocal effects; at some points they give the voice much-needed variation. You seem to have no problem emoting while singing and you sing on key very well. I believe that with the proper training, you can worry less about singing the melody and worry more about actually singing.
The rapping part has a bad flow. The tonal quality you use for your voice isn't great; sounds like you try to sound sexy and smooth, but come off as corny and overly-breathy. More breathing exercises and working on your lower range would help. The beat doesn't vary much, which only endorses the melody being cheesy, simplistic and dull. When you sing along to the melody, it sounds like you're just repeating the melody with your vocal instrument, over and over; give it some variation, even Britney Spears changes it up a bit when a melody gets repetitive. Your voice doesn't stand out, and this isn't an attack against your voice, it's just that you follow the melody so closely that your voice doesn't jump out, it just follows the notes. The lyrics are terrible, three minutes of you trying to explain how you want to have sex with me; I don't want you calling me pretty, I want you to be real. What do you care about? What makes you tick? Try writing some poetry, not for a girl, but for yourself, or a family member. Tupac didn't rap about just sex, and in his later years he actually tried to avoid it, only including it due to label pressure.
I understand that the type of music you're going for endorses cheesy copies, but at the moment, there's nothing that makes you stand out from other singers; in fact, you're a bit worse because of your lack of training and limited knowledge in songwriting/music theory. In any type of music, you must innovate and strive to sound different. People are considered artists due to their creativity, and you'll never learn how to be creative if you sing along to Usher and Akon for the rest of your life. Go out there, buy some CDs from genres you wouldn't normally listen to and listen with an open mind. Find what you like about their music, and incorperate it into yours. You gotta be real and be yourself when making music, otherwise you're just another carbon-copy trying to be something they're not. You have potential, and a nice voice, so I'd hate to see it go to waste.
Try listening to Marvin Gaye sometime, I think you'd like him.

It takes a good year before you're even quasi-decent at playing, so it takes patience. I personally prefer songwriting on my computer over playing an actual instrument any day, because damn, I can't get the guitar to sound like I want it to.

I really wish I had taken choir or music while in high school, but it wasn't until 18 that I fell in love with music.

Good advice there. For the rapping part, try listening to Rakim. He's one of the greatest rap lyricists. Good songs include (but are definitely not limited to) Follow The Leader, The Mystery (Who is God?), Lyrics of Fury and I Know You Got Soul.

Yeah, kids get the idea you can just pick up a guitar and start busting out awesome rock riffs. It actually takes a lot of time to become good. Guitar geniuses like Jimi Hendrix and Steve Vai are reported to have practiced for over 5 hours every day, and sometimes gone to sleep with the instrument in their hands.
Eric B. and Rakim were an awesome duo. Another one of their great songs was "Don't Sweat the Technique".
If you're looking for great lyricists, some of the biggies: Eminem/Ice Cube/Nas/The Roots/Public Enemy

Definitely, I had that idea when I started. I had no idea what the hell a fretboard was, I thought if I just used the pick on the strings, it'd make the right sound.
If you do want it learn guitar, it's recommended you get an instructor. Saving a few bucks a session isn't worth the stress involved in teaching yourself how to play. It's very confusing, and having a professional show you how helps a *lot*.

I think this depends on your previous musical background. If you haven't had much in the way of musical experience, it's going to take a long time. However, if you have quite a few years of another instrument, especially a keyboard instrument like the piano, it's not too hard to pickup the guitar. I have been playing the piano as long as I can remember, and picking up the guitar didn't take a tremendous amount of effort. Certainly I wasn't an expert the first time I played, but after a short time I could strum my way through a fair amount of music.
If you've never played an instrument, don't expect to be a great guitar player overnight.

Unless you're the kind of bright mind that fancies learning everything, the same can be said of any art. You can't learn to draw photorealistically just by joining a simple drawing workshop. Whim cannot assure excellence for the untrained curioso.
I try playing piano, but in all honesty, my hands are too small to adroitly move about the keyboard (I'm stark jealous of bigger hands). I've pondered if I could be a good harmonica player or woodwind player, but have not chased after the thoughts.
I sang in elementary school, played the euphonium brass instrument in high school (might have played saxophone, but my hypersensitivity forbade me to play by the taste of wood). I also played some percussion...vibraphone, xylophone. Musical instruments are fun, fun, fun. I still crave (I know this sounds random and nerdy)to try the theremin. I've always liked the fact you can kind of "act the music" in a sense, using your hands to guide the notes and adjust the frequencies.
And, composing? Yea, I do that. Wouldn't be right legally for me to post my compositions, though. *job*cough*nee-*
On the bright side of things, I can think of it as cheap homemade software training! Most of them sound cheesey and too tied down to popular music formula and mish-mash with the acoustics/reverb as a result of my dilettantism. However, there shall be higher education! I'm aiming to find music classes at my school.
