AoKH Dictator
posted 08-28-08 09:21 PM CT (US)

If you haven't noticed by now, your faithful dictator (considered "Aro" by majority) has become your new-old webmaster, returning to my old position as Seraph until my partner CrystalCrown returns, after which we'll both be working together. There has been a few changes to the roster; due to Real Life time constraints, three members of our respected team of moderators, newIdea, Qazitory and Gordon B, had to make their leave, while we have added a new member to our team, none other than giggling-green AoKH-vet Scud! Since I am your humbled, slightly possessed webmaster once again, I have mentioned the changes the site would under-go here on the forums; what kind of changes can I possibly pull out of my pockets? Perhaps something sinister, like pulling out a rabbit?!? Read on...

Since '06, perhaps even earlier, I have said each year that AoKH would get a make-over; right now, Age of Kings Heaven's content is out-dated, horridly coded, and she doesn't look as hot as she used to back in 1998. She lost her groove, some would say, and while she's always been a looker, she's had to put on more make-up than most great sites need to cover up her wrinkles. Age metaphores aside, updating content has always been met with a degree of difficulty, and our team aims to improve that. Now that the staff roster has been rebuilt, with additions to our staff coming very soon, one of our largest plans includes a complete website overhaul; an improved, up-to-date web design along with up-to-date content! Along with the content will come more news (that's right, a pretty front page with updated news!), contests, as well as dozens of other ideas floating around on how to make Age of Kings Heaven more fun for you all!

Of course, although the redesign is going to help our staff immensely in our operations, content is by no means the most important update we plan to make. What of the forums? The design is going to stay the same (save for Halloween and April Fools, of course; disorder is ideal on those days =D), so can always count on the good ol' forums looking as bright, happy and familiar as they always have, but we plan on implementing greater forumer participation into the new site, especially our University. Our forums are unmatched when it comes to AoK knowledge, and we aim to support that by making that knowledge accessible to everyone!

I'm very optimistic about Age of Kings Heaven's future, and our team plans on doing everything we can to make the site more exciting to the fans of the crowning jewel of real time strategy. We've always been the biggest and best Age of Kings websites out there, but we're about to become bigger and better!

Have any questions? Ask them here! Although these plans are not fully formulated as of yet, we can assure you that they'll happen. Hopefully this post has cleared some things up, and ask away if you have any questions.

I liked the eye-candy screenshot idea. Random eye-candy pics would be cool in the front page.

But, I insist still, I'm very sad to see old AoKH lay-out disappear. What happened to Blacksmith is horrible, but I understand it being easier for the mods to handle. If you go too modern on the design, I'll kill you, and this is a direct threat.

Great to hear that the forums will stay untouched.

Hello I am Sir AoK. Not well known at all, but I download Campaigns and other files here because I am an Aok fan myself. I personaly think the way aok.heavengames.com looks is fine, I don't think it needs a change in its looks. But if you guys really want it changed I guess its fine.

Well it's about more than a new look, many practical functions also change, like the University. Anyhow, welcome aboard .

Knowing this has been a big subject lately; is this massive updating going to be happening in coordination with changes to the Blacksmith Review Guidelines? It makes an odd sort of sense, at least to me.

Hey, I don't come here often so my opinion might not have much weight, but oh well.

For one thing, I think that the main page background looks fine. It always seemed inviting, or at least as inviting as a computer generated screen can seem. However, it would definitely good to have a random screenshot area like AoE3H, and a weekly poll.

For the Age2oons, maybe there could be an area in the Blacksmith that they are submitted to? It could work...

Also, as Yoshi said, it might be a good idea to finally add change to the Blacksmith. There were some great ideas in the guidelines thread, but no one totally agreed with any one and things got stuck. Maybe find a consensus and try to transition to a different system.

The University needs updating, especially in orginization. The "Go to..." system is hard to navigate, maybe just have the sections and articles in one big list.

I recall there being a "Best of the Blacksmith" news post a while back, it would be cool to make it a monthly institution, along with more focus on scenario design outside of the forums.

Also, if there were a way to integrate the forums into the Blacksmith more, there would be a large growth in forumers and scenario designers. It seems like there's a lot of scenarios and new designers in the Blacksmith, but that they never find their way here.

The future of AoKH sounds good. Hopefully the revamp will make this a better place than it is already.

I really hope that AoKH never dies out. I mean, Command & Conquer never died out. The Avalon Hill series of games wouldn't of been reduced to just the grognards had they not fallen out of business.

That would definitely be cool! Very very likely; we're going to look into it.
But, I insist still, I'm very sad to see old AoKH lay-out disappear. What happened to Blacksmith is horrible, but I understand it being easier for the mods to handle. If you go too modern on the design, I'll kill you, and this is a direct threat.
RE: the threat -- you haven't even kidnapped me yet you jerk, so how can I take this seriously!

The design will not be "modern", it'll just look more like your traditional HeavenGames site, with a medieval-AoK twist. I understand that you're afraid you might not like the new design, but it won't be nearly as drastic as the Blacksmith change. In fact, the Blacksmith change was under-done on my part (I didn't skin it very well), and I plan to change it's colors in the future. Wish I could integrate it within the main site, but it's so big that I don't think it's possible. However, don't worry -- I will try to make sure there will still be elements of old AoKH to hang onto.

*thinks out loud* Remember the AoKH Tavern? I wonder if there's something we can do with that.
Hello I am Sir AoK. Not well known at all, but I download Campaigns and other files here because I am an Aok fan myself. I personaly think the way aok.heavengames.com looks is fine, I don't think it needs a change in its looks. But if you guys really want it changed I guess its fine.
I don't understand the look change either. What's wrong with it? You might think it sucks but it's just the way AoKH is
How it looks is definitely acceptable, but underneath the looks lies aging, broken code. We plan on updating and cleaning the coding underneath, but that will require a change of the structure, the code that it's built upon that shapes the design. That means we are absolutely required to change the design if we plan on updating the content without our eyes melting, and that's something that has held us back in the past from crafting AoKH into the site we wanted. I could've tried adjusting the current AoKH layout, but it's just so unattractive and outdated that I couldn't stop there. We plan to make the site, as a whole, more accessible, brighter, prettier, and easier to navigate.
Hey, I don't come here often so my opinion might not have much weight, but oh well.
All opinions hold weight and I'm open to any opinions, suggestions, or questions.
Also, as Yoshi said, it might be a good idea to finally add change to the Blacksmith. There were some great ideas in the guidelines thread, but no one totally agreed with any one and things got stuck. Maybe find a consensus and try to transition to a different system.
We plan on changing to the guidelines Kor submitted to me, and opening a sticky discussion thread after the new guidelines are out so we can improve them further, to make sure they meet the needs of the majority of reviewers. The majority of the design community says that they need to be changed, and I agree whole-heartedly. Right now the final draft is being constructed; after that, it will go live.
The University needs updating, especially in orginization. The "Go to..." system is hard to navigate, maybe just have the sections and articles in one big list.
It'll be made to be easier to navigate *and* easier to submit your articles. Hopefully that can wait until after the website is revamped, of course, so we have a nice, clean code to work with; but if the revamp doesn't happen soon like we plan, we can go ahead with our University restructure anyway.

We also got a *lot* of articles we plan on filling our University with, so get ready for that.
I recall there being a "Best of the Blacksmith" news post a while back, it would be cool to make it a monthly institution, along with more focus on scenario design outside of the forums.
More Blacksmith Features are planned, if that's what you mean, as well as in-the-works campaign spotlights (featuring the work of our boy, Scud!). I don't quite understand what you mean when you say "focus on scenario design outside of the forums", however; care to clarify? ^^
Also, if there were a way to integrate the forums into the Blacksmith more, there would be a large growth in forumers and scenario designers. It seems like there's a lot of scenarios and new designers in the Blacksmith, but that they never find their way here.
That's a great suggestion, but that's out of our hands; the most I can do with the Blacksmith is skin it. I do believe, however, that greater forum-download integration is planned in the future.
I really hope that AoKH never dies out.
This place has been running strong for eight years now; the community is *still* innovating and developing new ideas, especially in the design and modding world. If the day we die out does come, it's in the distant future.

CSC Winners go on the front page?
You mean the winner of each week, as in a short news article, announcing their name and the next category? It would certainly be challenging to come up with as many different ways of saying, "Here's your winner, and the next category is ________" after a few dozen times.
Remember the AoKH Tavern? I wonder if there's something we can do with that.
Although I've only seen it once or twice (and I'm not even sure how I got to it), I'd noticed that most of the links are dead. As to what to do with it.... I have no idea.

And with regards to the eyecandy idea, could it be on a separate page, with the option to view them instead of the news, much like what is set up with the agetoons right now?

Edit: Scud,

We're way ahead of you there. We plan to host the winning entries from all rounds of the CSC on the site and we plan to reveal it to you all in due time.

But this means hard work for me to get it all read, but I'm sure you'll appreciate my hard work. Two years worth of the best screenshots from the competition (for they won their round, so they must be the best!) available on-site for you to look at your leisure and arranged in an easy-to-view manner.

So stay tuned for that!

Here's an 'unofficial' blacksmith feature we started at SWS hoping to take it to Aokh sometime. See if you can do something with the idea. ( you'll have to spend a few seconds registering for the forum though ).

It is encouraging to see Aokh staff finally doing something.

Edit: I looked at the 'university' now and it's terrible. It's outdated, difficult to use and low on content. Restructuring it would really help.

You had Tanneur, Mashek and myself giving you guys a contest, Tanneur runs the Blacksmith (masterfully, I might add), and we've all been in operation for a while. Give us some credit holmes, we've been doing *something*.

Right now, of course, we have much bigger plans that will overshadow pretty much everything we've ever done ever-like, and you guys can expect us to be open and tell you what we're doing to improve the site. I'd say your expectations are a nice motivational tool anyway.

Agreed. As we said, it's going to get an overhaul, so it becomes the greatest source of Age information on the 'net, just her mummy planned. ^^

Newsieing (is that a word?) the results hasn't been ruled out, so if this where to happen, yes they would appear on the front page (the news from the week's CSC might be bundled into a weekly round-up feature we have been thinking about). But all winning entries will still be hosted onto the site regardless for you to view whenever you want.

Another suggestion: try and bring back MCSN, except change it a little. We could have it weekly, or bi-weekly, with it alternating between IGZ and Hamachi (to accomodate those who won't/can't use IGZ *cough*Scuddles*cough*). And if we run out of new maps to play, we could always resort to playing games with funky settings (Migration with 25 pop, Wonder race, etc). Edit: Upon reflection, I guess I'm trying to say that we should have forum parties.

It would really bring the community together, I think.
Yeah, if only there WERE any news...

Would the CMS control the entire site or simply the Blacksmith? I've never used Radiant, Bricolage or Zope (never even heard of the latter two), but I'm familiar with a lot of the popular ones these days, e.g. Joomla, Drupal, the classic PHP-Nuke, etc...

The Blacksmith is it's own beast. The CMS will control the content of the entire site and the layout. I never cared for PHP Nuke (only one I've used before); Radiant seems a lot simpler, and fairly straightforward.
