If you haven't noticed by now, your faithful dictator (considered "Aro" by majority) has become your new-old webmaster, returning to my old position as Seraph until my partner CrystalCrown returns, after which we'll both be working together. There has been a few changes to the roster; due to Real Life time constraints, three members of our respected team of moderators, newIdea, Qazitory and Gordon B, had to make their leave, while we have added a new member to our team, none other than giggling-green AoKH-vet Scud! Since I am your humbled, slightly possessed webmaster once again, I have mentioned the changes the site would under-go here on the forums; what kind of changes can I possibly pull out of my pockets? Perhaps something sinister, like pulling out a rabbit?!? Read on...

Since '06, perhaps even earlier, I have said each year that AoKH would get a make-over; right now, Age of Kings Heaven's content is out-dated, horridly coded, and she doesn't look as hot as she used to back in 1998. She lost her groove, some would say, and while she's always been a looker, she's had to put on more make-up than most great sites need to cover up her wrinkles. Age metaphores aside, updating content has always been met with a degree of difficulty, and our team aims to improve that. Now that the staff roster has been rebuilt, with additions to our staff coming very soon, one of our largest plans includes a complete website overhaul; an improved, up-to-date web design along with up-to-date content! Along with the content will come more news (that's right, a pretty front page with updated news!), contests, as well as dozens of other ideas floating around on how to make Age of Kings Heaven more fun for you all!

Of course, although the redesign is going to help our staff immensely in our operations, content is by no means the most important update we plan to make. What of the forums? The design is going to stay the same (save for Halloween and April Fools, of course; disorder is ideal on those days =D), so can always count on the good ol' forums looking as bright, happy and familiar as they always have, but we plan on implementing greater forumer participation into the new site, especially our University. Our forums are unmatched when it comes to AoK knowledge, and we aim to support that by making that knowledge accessible to everyone!

I'm very optimistic about Age of Kings Heaven's future, and our team plans on doing everything we can to make the site more exciting to the fans of the crowning jewel of real time strategy. We've always been the biggest and best Age of Kings websites out there, but we're about to become bigger and better!

Have any questions? Ask them here! Although these plans are not fully formulated as of yet, we can assure you that they'll happen. Hopefully this post has cleared some things up, and ask away if you have any questions.

The last thread the seraph of DSH made was titled "The Future of Dungeon Siege Heaven" or something similar. It informed us we'd be closing down within a month. Thanks for scaring the daylights out of me, Aro.

Yay, the new site design is now cut up and skinned (besides a few *small* image alignment issues, but I'm sure I can clear that up quick). That means I can start formatting the content we're gonna have for the revamp and finish formatting the main page. After that, I put the design into Radiant and I'll be able to show you guys what it looks like before we put it up.

Well, I would've hoped the ! would imply a fair bit of optimism, eh?

Awesome! Is there anything that's going to be dropped or rewritten? Some of the older things on the site are rather out of date.
Would the CMS control the entire site or simply the Blacksmith? I've never used Radiant, Bricolage or Zope (never even heard of the latter two), but I'm familiar with a lot of the popular ones these days, e.g. Joomla, Drupal, the classic PHP-Nuke, etc...
I've built sites with Joomla, which is pretty technical, and Wordpress, which is a beginner's sort of thing. CMS systems are getting better and better all the time, and it will be cool to see the possibilites of a modern system on the AoKH site.

I reckon everything's going to be rewritten to some extent -- we plan to eliminate *ALL* of the invalid HTML and tables we possibly can, so the design is valid XHTML and as flexible/all-inclusive as possible. The page that goes live will have significantly less content than the site as it is (just the big pages, such as Cheats and the FAQs), but you can expect to see all of the previous content, plus more, soon after.

Our first goal is to simply get the design up, so we can work on the content live and properly format the pages (I'm very picky when it comes to page formatting and how the pages look; at AoE3H, I formatted almost all of the revamp content myself because I didn't think anybody else could get it to look how I wanted ). If we can get design up and live, game over, AoKH wins. It's alllll uphill from there; updating old content, planning new content, progress progress progress.

I'm not sure how much content will be dropped yet, but I'm going to keep as much as possible. As long as it's valid content, there's somewhere for it....
CMS systems are getting better and better all the time, and it will be cool to see the possibilites of a modern system on the AoKH site.
From my experience with Radiant, it's pretty damn cool and far superior to SHTML; it's just a bit complicated to learn. I have yet to learn all of the possibilities available, just the basics so we can get the damn thing up, but I'll learn, I'll learn....

Yeah I've used both before. Wordpress isn't much of a CMS really, and Mambo and Joomla were too complicated for my liking. There are many others that are better, but with the amount of customisation required for AoKH, it'd probably be best to stick with a simple one like Radiant.

It's good if you're building a site for someone who's computer illiterate, and you want them to be able to update content by themselves. It is mostly designed for blogs, but if you hack it enough you can get it to look like a normal site.

I think it's been longer than that. Years ago already I wrote that off as being all talk. I'm glad you're putting your money where your mouth is finally.

Never had the active content staff I needed back then, just the content, a half-assed layout and a dream. Add extra staff, a great layout, and throw in the dream for good measure, and you have 2008.

Probably not, but I'm seriously starting to consider it.... The color theme is a win, but I'm wondering how the forums will look with the new site's header and background texture.

The colour theme? What the current one? Well the yellow is abit, strange.

Also don't you think the forums will look out of place if they don't match the site?

That's the point I'm considering, but the main site will have a parchment background similar to the forums (I modelled it after the current design's parchment). It might not match it closely enough if I keep them the same, so... we'll have to see. I said I wouldn't have to change the theme before, but I might have to if only so it matches up.

Hopefully I'll be able to show you guys the new layout soon. Content development is going "swimmingly". Now I just need to figure out how I'm going to structure the main page and, if we decide to launch it with the revamped site, skin our gallery.

I don't know. It needs graphics. Otherwise it looks like a cookie-cutter template that could be applied to any site.

I think Stronghold Heaven has the stone (and a nice shade of wood, too) covered, so I could see why it isn't a gray....

As well, the colour of "Age of Kings Heaven" is too close to some of the hues in the parchment. It makes my eyes hurt a little.

It's quite good, but I really think it'd be better if it weren't so... vibrant? Vivid? The colours need to be less saturated I think. It makes it look more medieval.
