Yes it is the 11th of September and no terrorist attack has happened. I am just wondering what you guys think of this and were any of you expecting anything today?

Furthermore, I was in London 7 July 2005, say anything? Not masses of people died but it was terrorism by definition. This is a western topic!
I agree, and I think we can safely say that it holds some interest as a world wide subject too.
London 7 July 2005 (7/7), I was heart sick, and instantly became concerned for Stephen Richards. So, I sent him an email to know that he had survived the horrible attacks. I think all the thoughts and emotions I had on 9/11 were revisited on that day. I think that affected me deeply because like I noted before, the response from England to 9/11 was such a great comfort to me. I remember feeling angry, and yet helpless, and wishing that the powers that be in our Nation like the media and the government had done more to convey something similar. I don't know about you guys but my own Nation seems to fail me a lot if you will.

Bloody hell, 911 and London Bombings. Don't mean to be remorseless but i'm going to be blunt. At this moment at time I don't care about these two events. It actually hasn't even bothered me at all that these events happened. Of course, everyone to their own. Bearing in mind that was a long time before I discovered AoKH bearing in mind I would have been way to young to be on here anyway.

Wouldn't that mean something has happened this year? Eh? Eh?

Weird...I was in Turkey on 15th November and 20th November 2003, on the 15th I only heard the bombs distantly but on 20th we were driving just by the bank. It was total chaos and a scene that will never escape my mind (I still occasionally have nightmares). I thought I had got over it, but this summer there was another attack in Istanbul (first a sound bomb was exploded; when people came to look at what had happened, the real one set off, killing a lot of people). This happened about 4-7km away from where I was, and all the senses I had felt on 20th November came back.
However, you just have to get on with it. I can't continue to feel afraid every time I go to Istanbul. I don't say forget it, but you must learn to live with the anxiety. I am quite pissed off of all this 9/11 memorial stuff annually when no one seems to remember other events. I just wish we wouldn't bring out these topics anymore.
"Especially awe-inspiring is the fact that any single brain is made up of atoms that were forged in the hearts of countless stars billions of years ago... These atoms now form a conglomerate – your brain – that can not only ponder the very stars that gave it birth but can also think about its own ability to think and wonder about its own ability to wonder. With the arrival of humans…the universe has suddenly become conscious of itself. This, truly, is the greatest mystery of all." - Rama

If we don't face up to what happened, how can we hope to avoid the same mistakes and prevent it happening again?

When you say "face up to a situation", do you actually mean "have it nailed to our faces"?

I mean, not forget about it and pretend it didn't happen. Discuss it.

Oi, I though you said your work was DONE here!
Anyway, I think Surge's point was that the reaction that these people ('terrorists') want is us getting afraid. If we continue our lives normally it'll be less of a moral victory for them. I guess? Then again I haven't experienced these kinds of things too closely? But honestly, I still felt safer in central London area at 11 p.m. on the night of 7 July than I feel any random Friday in any town in Finland... It's not bombs that I'm afraid of, it's bloody drunks with too much testosterone.

Being stuck with something doesn't mean remembering. Moving onwards to find a solution doesn't mean forgetting.

I think you nailed this one. I think there's a great quote by Marlon Brando about this topic, can't remember it though, he said it at an interview about a movie of his in the 40's or 50's...

I think the philosophy thread may be a better place for that statement. I'm not going to argue over the meanings of words here.
We won't gain anything from pretending the attacks never happened. I'm not saying that we should give in for terrorism, but if people are willing to slaughter innocents on a large scale, there is clearly something massively wrong.

Happily, thanks.
And for any others who wish to continue the subject, feel free to do so in the Library. I do *not* view these threads as productive or beneficial to the community, especially with everybody baiting eachother and talking in circles, and leaving it open was clearly a mistake; it's a touchy subject, even today, and I don't care for handling the "wreckage" that ensues when it's discussed.
