i'm not exactly new to this site, just logged in after a long break from the net, news, everything. I was interested in designing back in the day, but these days I just lurk. Love the changes with the site

Anywho I noticed a "politics is allowed" sign and decided to see if any of you are interested in politics. I've been talking to my family a lot about the election and the economy and it really sparked my interest in the subject. And since I'm not looking for trouble the moderator can ban anybody he wants, in fact I encourage it.

For those of you interested in the election in the United States, what are your thoughts on the candidates given the debates that have happened so far?

I got a lot of calls from Kucinich more than anyone. He still wants to impeach Bush, for some reason. I like to think it's not a recording and the little guy's just lonely.
This will encourage people of different gender and race to consider a career in politics.
Well, now that's really depressing. That just means more potential politicians.

McCain conceded. The votes no longer matter.
McCain conceded on the basis of newspaper talk? Man, this election is really weird.

And I'm saying it still is. Want to guess how the election would have gone if Obama was not mixed race, but actually Black? How about if he had been Asian or Latino? And let's not forget how many death threats the poor guy already has, even before taking office.
If you think anyone was thinking "well, I'd never vote for a black, but since he's half white I guess it's ok," you're crazy. Believe me, anyone with anti-black sentiments is gonna be MORE angered by a candidate whose African father had him by a white American woman (I read an article about this somewhere a while back but I can't find it...). I can pretty much guarantee you that fewer people would have had a problem with him being 100% black. It wasn't long ago that miscegenation was still a crime in much of the US, after all. And Asians and Latinos do not have anywhere near the history of marginalization in this country as blacks - why do you think they'd have any more trouble?

edit: don't get the idea that I mean that Obama's election means "well, so much racism." But he really is pretty much the most barrier-shattering candidate possible other than maybe a black woman.

A black lesbian perhaps? Do you think America could have a gay president sometime in the near future?

It would be awesome if Obama came out of the closet sometime during his term. And converted to Judaism.

That would've been fine, I think. Islam however...

When the most powerful man on Earth is named Barack Hussein Obama and is coloured, what barriers could possibly exist for me? Don't underestimate the symbolic importance of this.
I find it incredibly ironic that all races are supposed to be equal, but it's still a big deal if a black man becomes president. He is just another man, and his colour doesn't have ANYTHING to do with his policies. Right?

That was a stupid first sentence, you're smarter than that. This is the first time a black man becomes the leader of state in the West. This is particularly a big deal in the States where blacks used to be SLAVES and make up ~20% of the population.

Geez, did you even read the post you quoted?

And I said symbolic importance, not political.

I'm not quite sure that you're getting my point here. Whether he succeeds or fails as a president, the global effects of this appointment will remain. Prior to this election, many regarded America as a home of bigotry, prejudice and nepotism in the West. Appointing George W. Bush for his name, and using Barack Hussein Obama's name and background as an argument against voting him? Come on, that is terrifying stuff.
You mean this?
I find it incredibly ironic that all races are supposed to be equal, but it's still a big deal if a black man becomes president. He is just another man, and his colour doesn't have ANYTHING to do with his policies. Right?
Of course everyone are supposed to be equal, but they are not. You can not deny that a white man has all doors open in the West, contrary to people of other race or gender.

No. The most(arguably) liberal state in the country, California, just revoked their law allowing gay marriage.

In the future, maybe. In the near future? No way.

Also, the great state of alaska reelected Senator Ted Stevens. I'm not sure how he's going to be able to do his job from behind bars though...

Although I guess I shouldn't really talk since my state reelected Blagojevich two years ago...

I'm thinking a KKK member actually came out and said Obama's success in becoming a senator, et cetera was perhaps due to his melanin-deficient ancestry. (:23) Not that that was an endorsement... but racism doesn't make logical sense. Never underestimate its sheer illogicality.

Ha, touché. A black lesbian atheist, then. (I saw some set of polls asking people whether they'd vote for a candidate who was a member of a bunch of different minority groups, and atheist was by far the lowest).

Yeah but that has nothing to do with his or anyone's likelihood of voting for him

I saw a Gallup poll once that said about half the country would not vote for a nonreligious person no matter what his political platform is. I guess America isn't the most progressive country in the world.
