AoKH Mafia Calendar and Discussion

Welcome to the hub of AoKH mafia gaming! Here is where you can post about anything that is mafia related. Announce your latest new game ideas! Learn new strategies! Complain about jesters! Anything about mafia goes...within reason.

For those of you who are scratching their head, asking "What's Mafia?", here's a website that will help you learn the ropes (don't let those ropes lynch you!). It also has animations to satisfy the imaginative side of your cranium: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/610087

Once you've learned how to play the game, head over to HeavenGames' dedicated mafia forum, a place for members across all heavens to play mafia. Their Mafia Guide Library has excellent guides on strategy and how to play the game. You can also read through previous games to see real examples of how the game is played, all documented in their Calendar thread. Branch out and play games with players from all across HG (but don't forget to check back in here at home once in a while ).

If you're looking for further information on how to play mafia, this wiki has numerous references and more in depth information about roles and strategy: http://mafiascum.net

So, any thoughts on activity here? Mithril has postponed his game until December, and I would like to run mine now, but I need twelve players. Should we have a period with no games or has the hiatus been long enough?

Also, we probably need to press gang a few of the more regular forummers who don't play into service. Our numbers need to grow.

We place a lot of emphasis on the idea that people should have roles with a things they can do.

Why don't we have a variety of actions available to every player, thereby allowing scum to actually lie and reducing setup deduction?

Perhaps even further abstracted. Encourage players to say what they did, but make it impossible to claim exactly what they can do.

Perhaps give an extensive list with varying levels of success rates for each player?

    Something like this?

    Town protection role:
    Investigate - 20%
    Track - 40%
    Watch - 40%
    Protect - 80%
    Roleblock - 60%
    Redirect - 60%
    Kill - 20%

    Town Investigative role:
    Investigate - 80%
    Track - 60%
    Watch - 60%
    Protect - 40%
    Roleblock - 40%
    Redirect - 20%

In that example the percentages add up, so theoretically both roles are equal. If every role in the game was drawing from the same action set, with a grand total of all their success probabilities a fixed constant for every role...hmm.

Yes something like that. Not that they will randomly use one of those but if they choose one of them they have that chance of succeeding.

It solves the doctor and cop confirmation problem and allows for less skilled players to fake claim more reasonably.

You could set each role to be 20% say across the board for each action(or whatever the minimum number should be) and then give each player a set budget to boost whichever actions they choose.

I am interested in the idea of running a game of Secret Hitler in the style of mafia. It would be a game without roles, just identities.

I did think up some good roles for it while walking to Church this morning.

It has the advantage of being fairly balanced for 5-10 players.

I think I'll do one game of pure vanilla and if it runs well I'll think up some roles. I'll mafia-fy the whole thing and run it instead of Neapolitan.
