I'm grumpy. I want to relax and have fun in the SS and occasionally be silly and post lots of comics about talking flag-patterned balls. But we can't go twenty-five posts without something about the looming shitstorm catastrophe between the embodiment of political corruption and the embodiment of negative American stereotypes.

So... let's talk politics here, as civilly as required by the CoC. And leave our poor balls alone.

Oh, yeah... #FeeltheJohnson. FEEEEEEL IIIIIT. It's the only ticket in all fifty states without any rape apologism. Also, look at the lovely Marxist artwork in the Graduate Student Association office.

At least until the moment the western politicians stop making such statements, Russian people would vote the way they did at last elections.
To be fair... it's Lithuania. What are they going to do?

Sooo... apparently we are launching airstrikes in Syria. Yeah.

Nice knowing you all in this world. I'm sure I'll see Popey in the next, but... it would be nice if there were more of you.

On the flip side, the UK and France are joining in, so it's a coordinated effort. That makes it less likely this will go south in my book.

I should also add that I don't think it's likely Russia will really go to war over Syria. Just not worth it.

Well, we're all still here--

Well, they're not wrong. I know they're trying to poke fun, but I think around 40% of the country does think Trump is gonna start the Big One. But throwing in the practical advice also kinda makes them look they're taking it seriously too. You know, the whole, "flame and say something outrageous, but lol j/k u mad bro" gambit.

Oh. Also, the Russian ambassador to the UN is calling the target of the strikes, "a scientific research center" aimed at "enhancing the economic effectiveness of Syria." I'm sure our media can't decide if it's the most evil chemical weapons factory ever built (Fox) or if they produced lifesaving drugs and pills that make kittens and puppies even more adorable to human eyes (CNN, MSNBC).

Discussion question: Do you believe we're currently in a second Cold War? A lot of people seem to be saying that this is the case, but there's plenty of arguments you could make against this idea, too. (I personally believe not.)

Russia is poisoning people in Western countries and the West is proxy-bombing its puppets. What do you think is up for debate?

One could argue that the balance between the United States and Russia is relatively asymmetrical compared to what it was when the USSR was around. Sure, both powers can still end the world as we know it with their nuclear weapon arsenals, but in terms of conventional military strength and support from allies, the United States is far, far stronger than Russia could ever hope to be in the foreseeable future, and that is what counts in a Cold War scenario.

Also, there is less of an ideological element than there once was. Russian authoritarianism, strong-man politics, whatever you want to call it, does not represent a compelling and organised idea in the same way that communism did, and even Americans would be reluctant to call the POTUS a champion of democracy these days, political corruption being the issue that it is.

Indirectly channelled conflict of the nature we see between Russia and the West is perhaps not so much a second Cold War but the modern way in which great powers battle each other.

The debate is not "Is there some manner of conflict going on?", because that's just a statement of fact. Rather, it's "Is the conflict similar enough to the Cold War era that we can consider it a continuation/'part two'?", which is more debatable than you might think. There's more to the Cold War than the US and the SU being assholes to each other through proxy wars and espionage.

Basically, what Chud said. There's the ideology angle, for one. In the Cold War, you had liberal capitalism in one corner and communism in the other. it was not only nations facing each other, it was whichever system was better than the other, and all the fear and hatred that came with that. The conflict we see today has none of that. Nobody in the West particularly cares what Russia's ideology is in this, only that they're not being very nice to us. It's not much different vice-versa, I imagine. It's about nations and their relationships to each other, not what ideologies those nations think or share.

Which brings us to point two: It's not a bipolar conflict like the Cold War was. Back then you had the Eastern and Western Blocs. You were with either, or you were neutral. Today, it's not that straightforward. Would you say China is 'with' Russia? Are they 'against' the US? For that matter, is West Europe 'with' the US, strictly? Is North Korea 'with' China? However you slice it, you can't divide this into two clear halves.

Yep, not suspicious at all.

And today Trump blocked sanctions against Russia that were put together by his own party.

Nothing suspicious going on at all. One has to wonder why Donny's so afraid of Putin.

Here's an article on what Brexit means for the relationship between the UK and Rotterdam that I found interesting. In particular, this quote stood out to me:
Currently, British supermarkets have a 2pm cut-off time to order something from the port to arrive on their lorries at warehouses by 5am the next day. This is possible because Britain’s EU membership means that these goods only face one bit of bureaucracy on their way – but that looks about to change.
Supermarkets can order goods on demand and have them delivered in 13 hours from across the Channel. Now that's fast. I think this is the main advantage of the EU; economy and trade benefits heavily from efficiency-- because the more time elapses, the less profit is made-- and the EU helps minimize the bureaucracy that hinders this.

R_V_A, look, you're just not getting it.

Nobody believes that the door was locked from the inside. Particularly, the retracted eyewitness statement about seeing men loitering does tremendous damage to the noncritical assumption that the event was a suicide.

This is so perfectly in keeping with the methods of the Russian kleptocracy that I don't see how anyone can avoid jumping to the obvious conclusion.

This is not a good hill for you to die on. Defending the murder of journalists just makes you look deceitful. Maskirovka is not merely the perpetuation of propaganda, but the muddying of the waters with conflicting and contrarian views to the end that nobody can know the true from false. Don't contribute to that.
