The UP AI Scripting Ladder


Welcome to the third continuous installment of the AoKH AI Scripting Ladder, now supporting Userpatch for the first time. Here you can enter your AI to compete against AIs with a wide range of abilities and a huge range of strategies. Whether it's to improve your AI's skill or whether you want to enjoy the exciting fun and community it provides, the Userpatch AI scripting ladder will suit your needs.

The Userpatch (UP) is a community patch that provides enormous benefits to the game, allowing AIs to become exponentially more intelligent, among others. Click here to download the patch and learn about everything the Userpatch can do! You'll find many scripters here who are more than willing to help you learn how to script and how to use the new UP commands.

How Do I Join?

If you want to enter the ladder, just drop a post in the thread with a link to your AI, tell us what civ you want it to play, and your AI will be added to the ladder.

When you enter your AI, it will play four unrated games against different opponents and given a rating based on its performance. Once your AI has been given a rating, your AI is ready to enter round play and climb up the ladder.

New: Each forummer can only have one AI in the ladder at any time.

How Does the Ladder Work?

Like multiplayer ladders, the AI ladder determines an AI script's overall skill ability over the course of several games and compares the skill ratings of other AIs to each other.

The AI Ladder uses the ELO system, the same system used to rank chess players or players on online gaming sites such as Voobly. The ladder is run in rounds with each AI grouped in a league of (ideally) five AIs according to ability. During each round, each AI will play each other AI in its league twice. The winning AI's score in each match will be increased according to its opponent's score, either a large amount if the AI defeated a higher ranked opponent or a smaller amount if the AI defeated a lower ranked opponent. The losing AI's score is decreased in the same way. Once the round is over, a new one begins, creating continuous cycles of competitive fun.

To make things more interesting, we randomize between Arabia, Ghost Lake, Gold Rush, Mongolia, Oasis, and Yucatan. To facilitate the randomization, you can download the official AI Ladder random map randomizer to test your AI and to test matches: link

AI Classes:

New: All AIs are divided into leagues according to ability, with ideally 5 AIs in each league. The leagues are reorganized at the end of each round to re-sort the AIs into the leagues by ability.

If an AI is the lowest-ranked AI, has at least 75 points lower than every other AI, and has lost at least three games in a row, the AI will likely be dropped unless the author requests the AI to remain in the ladder.

New: Requested games no longer count for score, but they can be requested nevertheless.

Schedule:


Anyone can judge any of the games in the AI ladder, and judges do not have to sign up for a game before playing it. However, you may make a post in the thread if you wish to reserve a game to judge. Those who are willing to judge and record these games, please post for which games you would like to play. Authors should not judge games that contain their own AI. All games should be played on Hard difficulty, tiny map, 200 pop, Dark Age, low resources, and Conquest victory. The current version of the Userpatch (version 1.4) and the official randomizer map script should be used. Games will be considered a draw if they last more than two hours, unless an AI has less than 2 villagers at the two hour mark. Thus, you can end the game after two hours if you wish.

It is recommended that the judges cheat "natural wonders" so that there is no possibility of interference from the judge. However, if you feel that this would hamper your ability to review the game you may opt not to do this, as long as you provide the recorded game.

If you decide to use Cheat Engine's speedhack feature, please limit your games to x5 speed on Slow speed or x3 speed on Fast speed, unless one AI has clearly won the game and you want to speed up the "cleaning up" process. Any faster speedhack is prone to mess up AI functionality on slower computers.

Once the game is finished, please write a short review of the game. Provide helpful comments on what were each AI's weak points so that the authors of the scripts can know how to update them. Also post the recorded game link along with the review. To make it easier for us to gather information from the reviews, please post the reviews of the games in this format (just copy it into your post and edit it):

The Horde (Full Random => Franks) vs. The Khanate (Full Random => Mayans)

Map Type: Arabia


At dark age Horde misses two sheep and the deer hunters are confused by a cliff, wasting gathering time. Khanate reaches fast 11min feudal age time, although it doesn't have the economy to immediately drop an archery range. It goes for skirmishers and spearmen. Meanwhile Horde prepares for flush defense with skirmishers and a tower.

Khanate tries to support its attack with a forward tower, but Horde's larger numbers are able to clear Khanate's army and smartly Horde uses a few villagers to raze the tower.

Horde is faster to reach the castle age and it hits Khanate hard with elite skirmishers, crossbowmen and knights. Khanate's crossbowmen have no chance in that fight.

Winner: The Horde
Game time: 0:40:25

TRON (mongols) vs Arabian_Knight Barbarian (Saracens)

Good start from both AIs from my view. TRON loses a vill to a wolf but gets his back by stealing 3 sheep from Barbarian. Tron gets up to feudal for flush in 12:30 ish (could be 10-11mins with mong without problems) and goes scouts + archers. Meanwhile barb starts hoarding stone to sell to buy food and gold. 18min in and barb hits castle age - score seems low, but that's due to him (hopefully delibrately) stopping training vills. TRON seems to have a window of opputunity to control the stables and hit his eco - will he strike? (A simple raid + gb in 16-17th min would have done a lot of damage, espically if it targeted the stone camp). TRON trains a few too many scouts and languishes in feudal. Meanwhile Barb does something sneaky - he sends a scout to attract all of TRON's army and send them round the map. Then he strikes with his kts with chain barding and kills all eco and the tc. TRON then resigns.

Game-time: 30 min
Winner: Barbarian

Comments for TRON:
- Generally, not a bad AI at all. Has very good eco balance.
- I would suggest using a different build up for scouts + archers. Go up earlier with fewer on wood and concentrate on getting a stable up with 2 builders with a 11ish feudal age. Get 4-5 scouts and harass the enemy with them. With luck he should counter this with spears. Stop training scouts, go 1-2 ranges archers, and counter his anti-scout army while you can use your food to go up.
- I wouldn't consider scale barding a good idea for feudal scouts unless against archers.
- Towers are almost useless for defending vs knights.

Game 1 of Round 18: UnfairSteel (Full Random => Japanese) vs. TRON (Mongols)

Map Type: Mongolia


TRON has a boar very unluckily behind a large horizontal forest, which lenghtens the path considerably. On the top of that it's an ambush: a wolf joins the boar and it's the end of the poor lurer. Nevertheless the boar managed to make it pretty near the TC before running back, and the support hunters were already called, and they chase the boar all the way back to its origin.
Then TRON tries to hunt the second boar, but the lurer fails to get any assistance, and the boar runs back after the lurer garrisons. The lurer follows and due to low hp she doesn't make it back to TC.

UnfairSteel's flush arrives before TRON has advanced to feudal age and Steel places a nasty forward tower to block TRON's lumber camp. TRON hits feudal age and immediately builds a defensive tower to protect itself. Steel fights under fire of the tower for a while but then retreats. However Steel builds another forward tower and that too is perfectly placed, making TRON'S hunting mill and lumber camp unusable.

Steel reaches the castle age, but plays rather passive and builds 2 castles that it doesn't even use for anything so early. The economy lead is massive at this point, and Steel booms to the imperial age. Once Steel finally attacks, the game is over quickly.

Winner: UnfairSteel
Game time: 0:59:15

Dreadnough (-> chinese) vs Chameleon (-> vikings)

that seems a fair pairing in civs, so let us see what happened:

both quite close on Mongolia map, feudal attack preparings..
Vikings trusted on pure foot troops, Dreadnough's chinese in an Scout/archer combo
an early fb tower from Chameleon did not any troubles to the chinese scouts.
so 26th minute both arrived at castle age and Dreadnough immediately searched for an early decision which emerged fatal, meanwhile facing a nicely stronger enemy army.
especially the pikes did a fast job vs the scouts, while the militia had no real problems with the archers in quite low count.
That was already the end, folks. TSA needed some time to handle the wide spread chinese buildings but later Chameleon switched to att grps and it was eog so at the 50th minute

Winner: chameleon (take it with a kiss lol)
speeding: oh, that was quite fast (5x) - if anyone complains I'll replay it (forgot to reduce)

Updated! I know the focus will be on the tournament, but feel free to play games if you like. I saw that TRON and The Horde had updates, and I updated them, but I wanted to make sure they were intended for the ladder as well instead of just for the tournament.

The Khanate(-> Huns) vs The Unknown (-> Goths)

Kanathe sent 2 worriors in DA to the far located gothic camp on Oasis map (for no use), so goths managed a superfast castle age time at 17th minute, while Huns needed 21 minutes. Unluckiliy the Goths weren't able to gain from this advantage and trained m&a, a very bad idea while facing cav archers in a very huge amount in very short time. When the hunnic attack was engagded so at the 28th minute the goths had only quite a minor count on infantry, missing any pike/skirmis or shelter, so those ran into their doom on compulsion when trying to defend the base.
dozens of cav archers leveled the gothic base whithout meeting any resistance.

Winner: The Khanate
time : fast 42 minutes
speeding: sry, fast again but @normal speed
Map: Oasis

Nightmare vs Random~

Random sucks a lot, so I suggest to take it out since the author seems not to be interested much for the Ladder

Nightmare went for a flush and quickly got the upperhand since there wasn't any noteable resistance;
a far too high setting of TS causes buildings to be placed in enemy base or close to it , while defenders suicide protecting those.

Winner: Nightmare
Time : canceled at 40th minute
speeding up 3x @ fast
Map: Yucatan

That game sounds pretty rigged for tron. The chances of it winning after a start like that against a tough opponent are zero. Nice free win for steel.

Game 6 of Round 18: IS_Machine (Full Random => Japanese) vs. Boss (Full Random => Japanese)

Map Type: Yucatan


ISM flushes and goes initially skirmishers and later adds men-at-arms. Boss defends against the flush with same army composition. At late feudal ISM finally starts a large attack, but Boss is able to counter it due to better battle performance.

At 31 minute ISM is the first one to hit castle age, and it immediately tries to take advantage of the access to crucial unit upgrades by attacking Boss with long swordsmen, crossbowmen and elite skirmishers. Boss hits castle age while being under attack, and with the aid of bodkin arrow and elite skirmisher upgrades it is able to defend itself.

After that the AIs constantly fight at castle age, never letting each other to save resources for imperial age. ISM places two castles at great strategical positions, which cause Boss trouble.

ISM keeps pushing Boss despite having less units on battle field, getting unnecessary losses. ISM's economy isn't balanced, and it has way too much villagers compared to wood. It also keeps selling food for low amount of gold whiel wood price stays untouched. It also has only 2 ranges to bump skirmishers (while Boss has 5). Due to these reasons Boss is eventually able to overcome ISM.

Winner: Boss
Game time: ~1:36:00 (sorry, forgot to check real time)

EDIT: I also support changing UP version from 1.3 to 1.4, since it's stable and records are compatible between different 1.4-versions.

Hey, since alevo is asking for dreadnought to be removed could you replace Dreadnought with Juggernaut? If not please give Juggernaut UnfairSteel's points and Replace UnfairSteel with Juggernaut.

Barbarian (Random => goths) vs Promi (Random => turks)

So Promi flushes with ranged units and barbarian counter flushes with m@a.

Barbarian sends 3 m@a to attack (without superiority) and kills 2-3 villagers. then he builds a defensive tower which blocks promi's counter attack.

Barbarian is the first to reach castle age at 25:46 (promi follows at 34:17) and takes out promi's forward tower.

After some time barbarian attacks and demolishes promi's army

Updated. One game left in the round. Dreadnought is archived. Juggernaut is facing Crusade in its first game. Also, I added a rule that drops an AI from the ladder if its rating drops below 1400.

Well at some point even the 6th-best out of 10 AI's will be below 1400, i'd suggest to alter this rule a bit. Maybe if there's a huge difference between the last place and the others.

I think we can safely update the ladder to 1.4 now. The AI features for 1.4 are complete, and some of the new AIs require the new fixes/features. The randomizer rms script could also be updated to use the new parameter for ai_info_map_type, so that the chosen internal map type appears in the Objectives window. For example, the Arabia part of the rms would be like ai_info_map_type ARABIA 0 0 1, where the 1 would make it show Arabia.

Crusade (random => chinese) vs Horde (random => mayan)

Start is decent by both sides, horde feudals first with 28 vills, he trains 4 and clicks castle. dropping archery ranges he's obviously going for xbow rush.

Crusade looks do be doing a flush of m@a and archers, but doesn't attack: this probably determines the result.

Meanwhile horde builds a ferocious army and attacks. The xbows wipe out the feudal army with ease.

The rest of the game is Horde cleaning up, quite efficiently.

Pardon that I reduce it to simple 4:3

Juggernaut (huns) vs Crusade (->teuts)

That was that silly map with the swamp between the contrahents.
The TCs were very near each another, perfect for a flush
You know about the flush menace, eel ?!
That's dangerous, isn't it ! so why allow Juggy a FC strat then ?

So 15th minute 1st attack from the teuts, nicely hit a gold camp, murdering several poor undefended villies.
meanwhile Juggy on the way to castle age and under permanent attack in the outskirts.
Ha ! what a nice placed tower by Crusade, exactly between two forests on the other side and the only path to the 2nd gc.
unlucky for Juggy loosing one vill by the other by that tower and defending on the other side (TC) of it, remaining 11 after 20 min.
rest was to await....

Winner Crusade (with easiness)
Map: that turkey bayou one ( I never choose this one)
Time: chanceless so in the 17th minute
speeding 3 @ fast (no big battle)
ask me for upload

Hmm I see in all my tests (for my huge project) that almost all Ais prefer a flush now, a bid hard for me to test FC strats lol
sometimes a tower may save me the arse 'till knights are up, but that's without insurance.
and yes you must take under the Huns very early or your'e done.

By the way, here is the RLM map script that will show the actual type in the Objectives window.
The only change is setting the last parameter in the ai_info_map_type commands to 1
