It's more of a novelty trigger set than a new find. It's not exactly new, either... crasher did something very similar (and perhaps better) in his submition to the first screenshot competition almost 3 years ago. Here's a pic, if you're interested.

yeah, i'll try and get some pics,

@zyxomma100: Yes that actually does look pretty good, but with some eye candy (e.g. flowers etc.) it does look rather good.... The look I was going for was the cave was in some ruins, thats why I had some damaged stone walls around the entrance to the cave and around the area to make it look like fallen pillars etc. and it actually looked pretty good.

Indeed Scud, but still this little trick would be very helpful. Maybe someone could submit a Utility to the Blacksmith explaining this in depth.

Dark Reign, its called "The man with no name" and should be out in less than a month. And dont think i'm raining on your parade, but if you check my posts in the thread i said i added a cavern and a misson to go to it on the 9th of june, so its not new, but i didnt really say it was a new trick beacsue it was basiclly changing units onweship and moving the map postion and map copying a pice of brigde into a moutain. (that wasnt meant to sound big headed/bitter/opffesnice etc.)

And for the interoir, i've placed sand and dirt isnide it and surrened the area with Moutians and cliffs rocks etc. so if you go to the end of the cave all you see if mounatians etc.

It looks weird...I'd go for crasher's method.

"Especially awe-inspiring is the fact that any single brain is made up of atoms that were forged in the hearts of countless stars billions of years ago... These atoms now form a conglomerate – your brain – that can not only ponder the very stars that gave it birth but can also think about its own ability to think and wonder about its own ability to wonder. With the arrival of humans…the universe has suddenly become conscious of itself. This, truly, is the greatest mystery of all." - Rama

@Scud: I see.... I didnt realise that, Oh well, no offence or anything taken

@Cherub DaVe: Thankyou

I've messed around with it further to make it look better, and with lower elevations in the right places it makes it look much better and more realistic; I placed a lower elevation underneith the stone walls and under the Bridge End.

Oliver used this trick in his campaign (Thunder and Lightning). The trick looks better with mountains over the bridge instead of walls, though.

well while i've got a thread open, i MIGHT have found something ELSE thats pretty useful... While working on my Historical Campaign for the HCC, I was trying to make an orriginal bridge, so I started Map Copying some stone walls on the side... But since I didn't want to copy King Bob's bridge off his first Stamford Bridge scenario, so i copyied it right on the edge of the bridge so you can still see the side of the bridge but it looks pretty good....

Might I suggest using gaia objects to cover the bridge? The sudden brickiness amid the cliffs seems unnatural. It does work splendidly for some sort of a artificial man-made cavern or mine-type-thing, though. Interesting find, Dark Reign!

yeah.. it was intended to be man made, most gaia objects dont cover the bridge or go over the edge... one of the downsides

Quite similar to yours, but still not. A tip: raise the elevation just in front of the brige end. Thus you'll get rid of the water.

I am also using something similer to this in my project. I am mking a ruins/cave mouth type thing as part of a story that's unraveled through the course of time.

[JPEG, (96.63 KB)]

it's not quite finished, I am still working on some of the eye candy, but so far I like the outcome. You can't actualy go into this cave, but still, I think it looks cool.

@oliver

That was one intersting thread. Going back to it today I realise the well discussion and AK's example were actually instrumental in changing the way I had been thinking about map design. And..I'd forgotten that caves had come up.

Back to the present - I'd seen your version (or something like it, maybe in L&T screenies? - ah.. Cross fire's Myth of Tomorrow, I think) and conciously set out to make a cave with out using any rocks or stonepiles just to see what could be done. Funny what motivates one isn't it?

Anyway you're right, elevation is the key to getting all the elements sitting properly. In this case I was OK with having the smudges of water visible as the main effect I was after was the dramatic 'double height' entrance. This effect was reduced when I raised the ground, but maybe if I pick the right tile under the bridge to get the slope=half-an-elevation-step I might be able get rid of the water without lowering the apparent height.

Or, just think of the (tiny) smudges as puddles that haven't dried up in the shade

@MoX

A nice progession of Dark Reign's proposal and could be even better if you can find a way to better integrate the bridge into the ruin. Perhaps use a broken bridge to the ruined look or add some other bridges (behind the flanking walls) so that the bridge 'terrain' appears in places other than (too obviously) above the cave entrance.

You could also try map-copying some rubble on top of the bridge to break up it's hard edges, particulary against the cliffs. Look forward to seeing it develops.
