Unit/Building Concepts


Recently I've noticed a lot of new units going up on the blacksmith both copy/paste and modeled and thought it would be nice to have an open forum for people to put cool unit concepts and give ideas for units they would like to see. I can see there are a lot of projects currently in the works and wouldn't mind sharing any concepts or completed graphics I come up with.

I invite anyone else to post their own ideas for units as well as any they've completed and are willing to share.

Personally I'm no good at 3d modeling and my units are all copy/paste for the most part but either are welcome.

Im not a fan of the beta cavalry units they look out of place with the rest of them.

Started on this a little while back but its too shaky so not going to complete it as I planned not now anyways.


Concept for a blow gunner attack,its just the first 5 frames of the archer without the bow and 2 more frames of the last animation part to make him look like he is steady to aim.

Dynasty, maybe you could use this unit, it is the beta cavalier from The making of mod. It is lighter than your unit, and if you fix the helmet it might be good.

Mahazona that Blowgunner looks really good. You think you'll plan on finishing it. If not I'll probably have a try at it eventually since it's one of the last things I'm needing for my Anerican civs

Oh yeah good idea I'll probably look at trying to adapt that unit at some point too

Yes, very impressive unit Trirem, you are increasing your skills in few time, congrats!

However a bit of criticism, if you would to accept it, is the blueish shadow on the front of the cataphract, it seems like an alpha/beta palette unit, try to correct it, but a part this all the rest is splendid!

Thanks to all guys, I hope the unit will look even better when finished !
For the color I already knew it, it's just that I'll fix the colors last, for now I am still adjusting some details. Maybe a chain mail texture to have it look more like a heavy cavalry, or maybe I'll keep it for the paladin I don't know yet.

Suggestion make the player color chest/back areas to a metal color to like armor and change the feather on the head to player color.I personally dont like the plastic looking armor much.

Will these awesome units get released anytime soon?

I'd make the arms, rather than the blue part darker. If you look at the blue part from the front it appears to be a shirt or surcoat, not armor.

Yeah it's definitely a shirt, from the scout cavalry I think. But I'd like to have it look more armored, maybe with a chain mail texture like the one you used in your houscarl where did you get it ?

I think I pulled that texture from part of the pikeman's arm. But it looks "larger" than the texture from the pikeman if that makes sense. Maybe I played with it some in GIMP first? I made that texture years ago for the generic swordsman and just copied and pasted it to the throwing axeman to make the houscarl unit.

I also took advantage of some of the throwing axeman shading that was darker and just pasted the texture over the lighter portions. Then at times I'd recolor a pixel to two if the texture in that spot needed to be brighter or darker. It's kind of amazing that it worked as well as it did, because it was a very primitive process done mostly in MS Paint.

And yes that is the light cavalry man on the base unit you started with.

I wonder if you could even pull the arms off the ES Knight? I doubt it because the shield will mask the near-side arm in most frames. But the knight and light cavalry man have the same animation pretty much. That's the only reason I was able to so easily stick the light cavalry man on the white horse.

Thanks for the explanations Dave ! I just checked it and the arms are pretty much the same so pasting the knight's arms on this unit would be barely noticeable. I'm starting to think that I could use the cavalier rider since it is already heavily armored (and recoloring those golden shoulders to grey, I don't really like them).
(Has anyone ever pasted the cavalier's rider on the knight's horse ? That would save me quite some time haha)

If the blue shirt version is done, can you upload it to the blacksmith before you change everything to the cavalier?

No one ever complains about having too many completed units.

Indeed more unit variations are always a good thing.
I did try to make a cavalier ride a knight horse but its too hard to do the standing animations are different and so is the run part.

Well I didn't have much time this week end so for now I just have concepts for the paladin, I haven't started yet on this unit. I think I'll use the ES cavalier as base unit, I'll change the head, the shield and the horse's coat like this :

For the cavalier it's almost finished, I just have to complete the dying animation which is more boring than hard.

trirem, make the shield a dark violett and not civilisation caolour, beacause one cannot distinguish it from the saddle

I like this concept better than your earlier paladin but pasting the armor to the standing animations might be very tricky.

Magnifique!/Wonderful! I think it's better using the cavalier as a base, it also looks heavier than using a light cavalry.

Haha too many French here ! Merci/Thanks guys, glad to see how many people like my units. They will all be available at the blacksmith once I finish them, I'll upload one file with the Asian and Arab cavalry.

Mahazona : I know it will be tough but I'll find a way, maybe by changing the standing animation to make it simpler.

DJeromimo : Are you sure it won't look a bit odd ? For me having a player color shield isn't a problem, as it will move you will distinguish it from the saddle easily IMO.

The horse movements are nearly identical on all the cavalry units. So pasting in the cavalier graphics should work.

Ok I'll try both, and even might end up doing both units it's really not that hard. But anyway this will be done last, adding a shield is really a piece of cake compared to the rest.

Looks good, maybe you can add more dark age stuff though, like planks from the dock?
