Hey, everyone.

So first off this isn't dead. I talked to Pulkit a few days ago and he assures me he hasn't quit. As far as I know there is no reason to worry. To be impatient, yes, there's plenty of reason for that.

The difference is I posted to do lists and updates and previews constantly while making the graphics. It let you all see progress as it happened. No one really wants to hear how today Pulkit set 3 unknown constants to -1. Its not good tv.

That said, maybe I'll see if I can get Pulkit to give us some sort of progress report.

Guys – sorry, I've been switching jobs and getting engaged this last few months. It's been hectic. RL > ToME for these matter, alas. So that's why the delay and lack of updates from me.

Here's the screenshot I promised. One highly requested feature was a primary orc-based army for the evil civs. At present civs like Mordor and Angmar get a handful of orcs, and their regular units are still men.

Orc Hall replaces the War Hall for evil civs, where the primary Orc army can be trained. You have cheap, light infantry, spears and archers, as well as the heavy infantry Black Orcs.

Human soldiers are still available, but moved to the Muster Hall for evil civs.

What do you guys think?

Here's how they play out:

1. Basic orcs are slightly cheap, light and fast, but balanced by being quite weak.
- This makes orcs suitable for skirmishes like in the books/movies, but a prolonged (d)rush is likely not sustainable due to weak stats.

2. Orc Breeding research gives an HP boost, making orcs viable fighting forces in later ages.

3. As gold runs scare, techs get more expensive, and the Muster Hall units get more attractive, Orc Infestation research lowers cost and train times for regular orcs.

4. You get heavy Black Orcs in the last age, making Orc Hall an all-round military building. This offers you a stronger, high-armoured version of the orcs, that is still slightly cheaper than other typical heavy infantry.

The TOME tech-tree was one of the most well done tech-trees I've ever seen in a mod.

I had a question though, are you going to re-do orc mercenaries for the Evil men civs? It would seem to me like a revamp were required. Since the new orc tech tree is much different with more units.

@Pulkit: Looks like a good plan- it's only fitting that evil civs rely on massive numbers, considering the huge hosts described by Tolkien for each battle! I still vividly remember the description of the ambush of the Gladden Fields, what with multiple orcs swarming each person and trying to overwhelm them. I love the attention to detail.

No worries, RL is more important- do what you need to do

The tech tree and graphical aspects are indeed quite impressive- I'm quite envious of the skill involved!

That tech tree looks good!
Half orcs doesn't sound right to me.. I think only Saruman used half orcs, not any other faction.

I'll have to have a look at the Two Towers and RotK again, but I believe Saruman bred Orcs, Uruks, Goblins, and Dunlendings in various mixes (this is explicitly stated, while Sauron also experimented with various forms of breeding. Both Sauron and Saruman used various forms of necromancy to corrupt and strengthen their new breeds.

Sauron definitely used Uruk-hai before Saruman did, though it was Saruman who built his entire army around them. Additionally, the books make mention of various types of evil creatures, including but not limited to Goblins, Hobgoblins, Orcs, Goblin-men, Orc-men, Uruks, Black Orcs, Black Uruks, Uruk-hai, Cave trolls, Mountain trolls, Olog-hai. Then you have the extensive hierarchy among Orcs that further complicates things.

One thing that makes this point confusing is the fact that in the books, detail is given with regard to Saruman's breeding of various creatures, but naught with regard to Sauron's. It is only stated that Sauron uses various breeds of creatures, and by the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, had created even more dangerous creatures than had ever been seen before. Considering also that it would be impractical and confusing to use different names for every single orc unit depending on their faction, I'd say that "Half-Orc" is the best umbrella term to use, and does a great job of demonstrating the progression and evolution of the evil forces throughout the ages.

Half-orcs are associated quite heavily with Saruman. Bill Ferny's friend was the first one we saw, and Merry and Pippin said the ones in Isengard's army reminded them of him. They are not mentioned in the forces of Mordor anywhere I recall, but are brought up again in the scouring of the Shire. Here they immediately reminded Sam of Saruman's agent in Bree and Merry of Isengard's armies. The movies don't bring up the issue at all, aside from maybe the odd remark from Treebeard. Finally, Tolkien made a quote (on this page) on their origins that mentions Saruman and Morgoth, but not Sauron.

It's not impossible that half-orcs were in the armies of Mordor and Dol Guldur, but I'd prefer it if the top tier units were named say, Soldier-orcs and Orc Sentinels.
Semantics aside, this looks like a great addition to the mod! Before, it felt like Mordor produced a human army supplemented with orcs, when it should have been the other way around.

Congratulations on both the engagement and the new job as well!

Thanks. Yeah, I've got the tech tree fixed now.

I use Half-orcs as an encompassing term, covering orc-men cross breeds (orc-men, man-orcs etc). It is simply the better option than Orc-man warrior or Man-orc warrior!

Before Saruman, Sauron had been actively engaged in cross-breeding orcs to improve their performance. Example, a notable benefit of orc-men was a better ability to withstand sunlight. So while Saruman discovered half-orcs later, Mordor's armies already comprised of snaga orcs, half-orcs and black uruks as different grades of soldiers. Only that Sauron's half-orcs aren't given labels as such.

From a gameplay perspective, it makes sense for the stronger Half-orcs to be the final upgrades even though Sauron technically had them since the days of Morgoth.

I guess that Uruk Hai - specifically declared as such - will still be the unique unit of Isengard?

Oh and: What is the gameplay difference between Black Orcs and chieftains?

In the beta chieftains had spears and and anticavalry bonuses, and were more costly. Not sure if they've been tweaked since.

Hello ToME team, I'm xdemon and I am an admirer of your work here. I'm new to the forum, but not to the mod. I have been playing it since first release and I would like to help support it. I have a YouTube channel and would like permission to post videos of your mod. I have not posted much, but I've decided that maybe I can post a few videos just to help spread the word of the mod. I have told many people at my school, as our Walmart currently sells AoK with expansion for about $2.50. Many of my friends have purchased the game and have downloaded the mod. We play over Game Ranger and we hope the update will come soon. Keep up the good work, everything so far is perfect!

I'm grateful for your interest, but I'll advise that you wait for the final version to be released (which we are actively working on at the moment). The beta version you play is now 1.5 years old, and we've been advertising the new features/content for quite a while now that your viewers may be expecting to see the new content. Also, given that we are close to finishing the final version, your videos may become outdated quite soon.

That said, the decision is yours, of course! My personal advice: publish a few videos if you must, but wait for the next release before you make ToME a regular feature on your channel.

Thank you Pulkit, I'll take your advice and wait until the final release is published. When the final version comes out I will post a link to my YouTube channel so you guys can see any videos I do post.

Suggestion if you still take any: Have you made the Black Númenórean unit available to be trained in a Random Match? If so what faction are they in? Haven't seen them around in a game, I'm thinking Umbar would be a start if you haven't put them in yet.
