It doesn't exactly work that way

A new data file would require the near-complete redesign of every single scenario, so it would essentially be a waste to design them, change the file, and have to totally remake them from scratch later, so I think that the options that Matt presented are the only viable ones.

TIMELINE? Seriously? You would redo for a TIMELINE?

So it's not worthy I guess, unless he gains a trophy or money for fixing the timeline.
It's better have a not-perfect mod than a incomplete one (because people uses to not love redoing months of hardwork).

AGE has a copy function. Open 2 windows, one with ToME data, one with a clean empires2_x1_p1 file, and copy all the graphics, all the units, etc, to see in which category the bug lies. That should not take more than 10 minutes, I might also do that myself tomorrow when I have more time.

I used that copy-paste fix method myself a couple times when I (repeatedly) ended up with a fatal crash in the editor on my mod. I heartily recommend the practice.

[EDIT]: If you think it can be reasonably done, I'm in favor of a working timeline.

If it's a .dat bug, then I think you should really do what you can to fix it. Dat bugs cause problems in the future, if bugs are left unsolved (the very least scenario compatibility as you said). Try the method John mentioned. No need to hurry, quality is more important.

The bug lies in the researches or technology tab (no way to test one without the other). Units etc. are fine, but when copying the researches and techs, the timeline breaks.

"The question is, does anyone think this is a terribly crippling bug? Fixing it would require remaking the entire data file. If we ignore it, the data file is almost done. So the question, worth the extra effort/wait or not to you guys?"

A timeline bug? I rarely even look at the timeline, unless I wanted to see the exact time that my enemy's numbers began falling. IMO, as long as my kills are the highest of the game and my losses are fewest, the time at which they occurred is irrelevant.

As for me I love to look at the timeline of my enemy's destruction! But I would really not care if you took it out to save on time and effort. I for one, though, would be willing to wait a bit longer for the timeline. Also, how much more work would be needed to take the timeline out?

John, thanks! I figured as much. It might be possible to just keep halving the techs until the culprit is located. If I have some free time I will look into this. You're more than welcome to beat me to it and narrow it down though.

To me the timeline is not that big of a deal. If it could be fixed with a reasonable amount of effort though, fixing it would be the way to go. All that being said, you all have put a lot of work into this, so it's really your call.

When I made my link mod his angled walking frames didnt look right. I tried to fix it but, it didn't really work out. At the end of the day I left it. I was glad to have it done and looking pretty good in most of the frames.

I wouldn't say that the timeline thing is a big problem per se. However the .dat bug might manifest itself in other ways that might turn out to be more problematic.

I don't know if any scenarios/campaigns have been made so far. If they all need to be remade, then perhaps it is better not to bother with it..

@Matt It's not crippling. It'd be nice to get it fixed, but if its going to hold back the release too much Id say just leave it for the next update.

Seems to be the consensus opinion. I'll spend a couple hours today trying to hunt down the bug. Maybe I'll get lucky.

I'm just going to use the less than ideal system of deleting half the techs and researches, then keep halving until I'm down to one. Should be a riot.

I can't pin it down. I'd really rather just forget it, I never noticed it until Pulkit told me, and I've played with the Beta and a lot of other versions quite a bit. We'll see if Pulkit is more stubborn in finding a fix, but I don't care enough to keep looking.

This is surprising and very helpful John, and Matt, that you were able to reproduce the the bug when copying researches/techs. I tried the test just as you suggested but nothing reproduced the timeline bug for me. Perhaps a deeper dive into the researches and techs can help home in on the offending entry.

Otherwise, redoing the dat is not too long given AGE's copy-across-dat-files ability. This also helps me get rid of some old and wasteful researches, techs and units.

It can't be a civ specific tech, because the Timeline breaks for every civ. That means it's one of the shared researches or techs, probably.

Odd thought. Did you make any data changes to the Gaia civ? It's present in every game and might be the culprit. Perhaps a copy to all civs sort of thing?

Well that would be in the units, and from your experiments the offending entry lies somewhere in researches and/or techs.

I also didn't touch any stats in the Civilizations tab. But hey, I DID change the names of the civilizations in the dat file. Do you think it's the name change?

My laptop is pretty much dead (posting from a tablet), so I can't check. I wouldn't be shocked if it is just the name change to Arda though.

Will there be a changing of the civ stats?

Also, is there any way to say put some actual history in the history section? I mean below the civ stats and short description.

Yeah after watching ZeroEmpire's coverage on youtube earlier this month I figure we need some history especially for the obscure civs.

So I just tried to find the bug. I could not locate it in the technology/research section, and when I started over on a new data, the bug suddenly didn't appear anymore. I am not sure if this has something to do with the order in which I copied the data from the original file. When I copied graphics and units first and then researches and techs, the timeline was gone, when doing it the other way round, it suddenly wasn't.

I also noticed that the "Technology Tree Related?" numbers greatly differ from the ones in Conquerors.

Then it is probably due to the DAT file having suffered AGE 1.8 all the way to 3.xx. Perhaps things went haywire when migrating to newer versions over the years.

Edit: thanks a lot for your help in tracking this bug, John! I'll be following your solution for getting the timeline restored.

Only thank me if it actually works for you, too. Because I totally do not understand what is causing this.

@Mahazona: In ToME try the Numenorans, they have recoloured sails. And in his Outlands mod, AnimalMan made new sails for the pirate ship. But other than that, I can't think of any mod editing sails, so you are certainly right with that being mostly untouched.
Edit: I think on some screenshots of steve's mod AoV, there were some white recoloured sails.

Carter, sure go ahead if you like! I'd like the civ history to not be long, though. I'm including the following info in the history section:

Civ info:
1. A tagline describing the civ style.
2. A "How to play" paragraph with a brief outlook of available options and play styles.
3. Actualy LotR history.

And other articles describing different elements of the game, such as using Siege Towers, Assassins, Wonders etc.

I'm getting very close to completion on my end. I've been able to fix up the tech tree too!
