I can confirm that triggers are much better for these things.
A script will work only if it is a random map and you don't know it's shape, so the AI will find its way.
If you've got a fixed map, a fixed scenario, you can use triggers.
There are a few parameters to adjust in the AI script file tho. For instance the ability to dodge missles or attack walls etc.
After that, I usually make a massive usage of patrol effect. It will actually create an attack group!
Just spawn 100s of units and then send them patrol to past your position. They will cross over your units and start attacking them.
Also with triggers you can adjust the stance of the units, so as to say that in a patrol group having archers with stand ground will produce a nice effect where the computer units take "a formation" when fighting, with arcs backside etc etc
