Hmm. I was looking at early AoK screenshots at www.aoe2.com when I happened to find THESE here.
There's something odd about these early AoK Pre-Alpha screens. It seems as though in those stages, AoK was actually some sort of a HUGE modpack created by ES to experiment with in AoE to create concept graphics of AoK. What it does, is that it takes AoE into the Middle Ages. Here are some shots that show this. Note any AoE features in them.

2.This is a town siege. Notice the AoE rocks. And those archers seem to really be Composite Bowmen with their graphics edited. The infantrymen at the bottom have got to be Hoplites. 3.This is a British town scene. Note the AoE cursor, AoE trees, and the land-water border terrain, which resembles that of AoE. How did ES put the trade carts in the supposedly modpack game? 4.A scene of a Frankish army marching out of its town. Note the AoE rocks, grass patches, cacti, ect.
1.This is AoE, alright. Looks like Spy_Oz's modpack. Then what's up with that gate?
