I always thought that they just took several pics of the whole map, so that they had the whole map if they overlapped the pics, and then used Adobe PS's handy dandy Photomerge.
Mebbe not.

This is how you do it:
press Ctrl+F12 then a box will appear saying: Map reduction size. I dont have any idea what the numbers do but I just click ok

The reduction size means a ratio to the real map that you are playing. 1:3 produces the biggest map(which is one-third of the real map) with biggest file size. Higher the ratio, smaller the map would be and shorter the time it would take.
