It says here that you can somehow make explosions with hawks and macaws:
The best version (in my opinion) is to use Macaws or Hawks the same way as the petards. The benefit is: Hawks and Macaws make large explosions (bigger than the petard) when they are killed. They can also be placed anywhere on the map.

I made a kill object trigger and made the area a nice sized box around them, set the condition timer to 1 but it didn't work....I could've screwed up, I'll play with it some more.

Unrelated, but a Condition of Timer 1 is worthless... it just makes the trigger fire ASAP anyway, so you're better off not adding it.
It would help if you told us what is going on. Do the Hawks ever get created, and then start flying around? Or does even that happen?

If you placed the hawks and then did a kill trigger with timer 1,the hawk could have flown away etc. I suggest not to place the hawk on the map like you normally place units but instead make a trigger to create the object(hawk)in the spot and in the same trigger make an effect to kill the hawk in that spot. Dont put any timer. You can loop the trigger for multiple blasts.
I used alot of those(exploding hawks and macaws)in my campaign saiyan pride.
Effect 0: Create Unit, Player Gaia, Macaw Effect 1: Kill Units in Area, Player Gaia, Macaw
Macaws are better because you usually won't even see them before the explosion starts. Hawks often get visible just before the explosion.
