I know squat about AIs.

I am currently making a fictional campaign (Role-playing mixed).
It will undergo a lot of work after I get off exams (next wednesday).

In the opening sequence, the player accompanies a trade cart. I have tried several immobile unit ais, but none of them prevent the trade cart from moving around. The trade cart has to remain stationary in the beginning.

Can I 'freeze unit' loop trigger it, or is there an ai I can use?

you could use a task triger..have it tasked where it is standing..and loopit of, you could also use patrol..just patrol right where it is standing and loop it..
Or if you can't see the trade could put a Palside wall around it..
of course all these trig would be deactivated when the trade cart needs to be able to move, and the wall should be deleted before your unit can see it

The unit sees it from the beginning: the reason it has to be stationary is that the unit has to go to the stables, get a horse, and come back. The trade cart moves a little distance at the beginning and then just stops, but it's still bothersome.

That's fine.

Either I use a trade cart or come up with new reason for a farmer to have to go into town and get attacked brutally on the way.

maybe if I used "emperor in a barrel" it wouldn't move because it's a hero. But that would take away from the effect.

I am not sure if this will work or not, because you didn't say whether you are the farmer or not.
How about this trigger setup:

Trigger 1: loop off, starting state on
C: Timer (set it to whatever time you need the cart)
E: Task object (farmer to stable)

Trigger 2: loop off, starting state on
C: Bring object to object (farmer to stable)
E: Create object (trade cart outside the stable)

(If you want the cart to follow the farmer on its own use this, but you cant have anymore P1 trade carts anywhere)
Trigger 3: loop on, starting state on
C: Object in area (entire map)
E: task object (trade cart to farmer)

Disable the trigger when the attack begins.

sorry I wasn't clear.

The trade cart is there at the beginning, is controlled by ai.

you play a villager at the beginning. Several lines of dialogue. Then you have to go to the stables, and you become scout cavalry (I did this already, no bugs there)

however, a few seconds into the game, the trade cart moves maybe 5 - 10 tiles away. It's just kinda annoying.

At the begining of the scenario change the ownership of the cart to gaia with a trigger. Making gaia will stop it from moving and because it was made gaia by a trigger it will not automatic change ownership.

Ingo raised this point in a discussion with Sandy Petersen once. As I recall, there was no way to freeze trade carts.

I certainly never solved the problem. I changed a trade cart to a scout in my last scenario because I couldn't get the cart to stay still.

I guess I should just stay away from trade carts.
