I'm not sure if there are many long termers here (by long termers I mean original Age of Empires 2 fans who were around with its inception) but the game actually had different graphics to what you see in the final game. This version was scrapped, and to be honest with you I find the original graphics quite appealing. I will try and find the original magazine pictures and scan if for you.

Firm believer in micro-management.

Taichi San, your mod looks interesting and the eye candy you added looks good.

Is there any chance you could send me the bmp's (both background and main picture, in aoe1 called g.bmp and s.bmp) and textfiles of the eye candy/terrains you added, so I can use it in my aoe1 mod too?

Okay, I had to consider it but you will have to extract your works from my own project but be sure to credit me if you want to use any, especially the terrains that I reconstructed from screenshots which were an hell of an job lol

Let's just say I'm not the very best in aok editing stuff. A while back I managed to extract some slp's from the normal aok, but I've forgotten how. It would be great if you could send the slp files.

Of course you'll receive credit. And I have an idea to make some terrain patches myself, which I could share with you too.

Recently I started playing and editing age of mythology and am impressed by the easyness the engine works with, its almost all in xml format lol.
Im starting to wonder something very much peoples.
Originally, all aoe2&1 units have been made as 3d models, but because of the 2d engine they have been animated to frames.

If microsoft has a mighty vault of all 3d models used to make aoe2, I wonder if you could easily turn all aoe2 models into 3d action in age of mythology :P
Ofcourse there would be certain missing animations like being tossed into the sky and other misc things that are aom related, but the base would be there.
I wonder if anyone thought about this before, but I guess everything is gone or atleast nolonger available to the public.

Because im new to aom editing I wonder if its possible to add 2d objects (sprites) to the game because it has some minor objects in 2d, but haven't seen any way yet.
This extremely extended engine could make aoe2 extremely funny if you do it right, and the god powers are like something to execute any game actions you like that you can program into them.

Ah. It's closer, a lot closer, but maddeningly slow. Everyone is surprised at how long it is taking.

I know for a fact that about half of the Art Assets (texture/meshes/animations) used to make AoK are missing/Incomplete. We didn't have perforce/alienbrain or any other proper asset control solution. As a result they were scattered across people's machines and not properly archived during production.

One note about AoM Textures: The AoM compressed texture format is custom - a slight variant on DXTn that is easier for a CPU to decompress (I know this because I made the format). There is also an 8-bit+palette texture format.

You didn't, It's been in planning for EEEv2 for a long time.
I'm also seperatin out *alot* of peices of graphic for new eye-candy objects, too.

@MattP: This might of been asked before, but how involved were you in making AoE 3 compared to AoE 2?

@BF_Tanks: I had very little to do with AoE 3. I was off on the console team pretty much the whole time, then I left ES in 2004.

If something ever come out of your effort - say, AoK on Steam, would it be difficult to also give AoE the same treatment? How about persuading Microsoft to also put out other classical PC games for digital release? (Posting on this forum, I'm obviously thinking about Rise of Nations, the other jewel of the Microsoft PC game crown :-) )

@atrican: I think the biggest factor in helping MS to decide to keep re-releasing titles digitally would be how well the previous titles sold, and the expense of the digital version. As long as there is easy revenue to be realized, the incentives to do would be higher.

But understand that Microsoft is a very large company, and getting things done internally is very complicated and involves lots of different departments, and some parts of MS don't consider what other groups are trying to accomplish to be a priority.

If age of empires 2 is ever getting a mayor update, will I be eligable to get it since Ive bought aoe2 (twice)?
